Sad but nice of them

I popped to the vet place where I get the Hills etc from yesterday

And the nurse had these lovely cards with the Rainbow Bridge and the
poem on them- she was doing a list labelled "PTS-cards". She said they
had three, one with dogs, one with cats and one with no animals on it
at all for those people who have lost any other sort of pet -she told
me they were thinking about getting one with rabbits on because
rabbits are on the increas as pets-and they sent one when a pet had to
be PTS and they'd had two that day and she said she was expecting a
third as one of their patients coming in was a 24-year old cat with
multiple health problems and having talked to the slaves they were
saying it was almost certainly time

Sad but nice of them- my current practice, which I will probably leave
and register with this practice the day Kylie annouces she's going
back to Oz do nothing like that- in fact when Fugazi went a week or so
later they sent me a mailshot thanking for me "for entrusting us with
the care of your pet- may they have a long and happy life under our
care" (I did complain) and when I called to ask Kylie to take Isis off
her list she went out and brought a card herself to send to us but the
practice does nothing like that

I know they just do it for anyone but I did appreciate the card I got
from the vet after Zak.  A few weeks later one of the woman in the office
called to give me condolences.  She said one of the other woman mentioned
it was the guy with the beard and she knew who it was.  I did not 100%
know what to make of the call but it was nice.

Awwwww, that was sweet of her to do that:)
When Mutt, age 19,  went to The Bridge last Dec 9, we didn't even get a call
or a card from that damn TED.  We'll never go there again, those evil women
at the desk charged us $50 for a simple cremation.  I'm still hissed off
about that!

When Shmogg was assisted over to the Bridge, it was AUS$90 for the consult
and the injection, and I had a choice of a) take the body home, free b)
Disposal*, $30, c)Cremation via the RPCA** AUS$150 or d)"Personalised
Cremation" *** $270.

A $50 fee sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

* Chucked in a bin and incinerated at the local biological waste disposal
depot.
** They do a 'mass cremation' when they have enough animal carcasses to
justify it. Whilst they say I got hte ashes of Shmogg back, I (and they)
cannot gurantee that 'all' of Shmogg is there nor that I don't have 'some
other ashes' mixed in (although all care is taken, etc etc). I got the ashes
back 5 weeks after he was PTS. It was in a very nice decorated box with
Shmogg's details on it, with the ashes in a sealed bag inside. I was happy
with what they had provided.
*** They would take Shmogg's body and do an individual cremation, returning
the ashes within 3-5 days in a 'personalised urn'. I coudl have even
organised a *funeral* through them - they were very much like a regular
human funeral service. I thought that it was rather excessive and played on
people's vunerability during times of grief. Besides which, I know that with
the RPCA, my money went to helping other animals, whereas had I chosen the
'funeral' service, it would have just gone into someone's pocket. Shmogg
wasn't big on human rituals, so it wouldn't have meant anything to him
anyway.

If $50.00 was all you were charged, count yourself  lucky. It is according
to weight here with a $75.00 minimum.

Well, the sad thing was Mutt went to RB 'on his own' at age 19, and when we
took his poor remains in, the gals at the desk were so aloof and uncaring,
it really hissed me off, and I/we were brokenhearted.  Did they give a fig?
NO!!   It wasn't our regular vet, as he is open Tues-Sat and we had to take
Mutt's body in on a Monday...did they have to be so uncaring?  He was our
beloved friend for 18 years, and I told them that too. I was in tears, but
those 'hoomins' were so uncaring, I really wanted to yell at them, but I was
so sad.  And I still miss our poor ol Mutt. He was DH's velcro kitty.  But,
he's happy at The Bridge now...and he left instructions to the others before
he went to RB.  He just 'took a nap' and woke up there, on our big bed.
Dammit, now I'm crying again...sorry

Fifty dollars doesn't sound bad to me, considering what vet costs are
today. Last cat I had euthanized was $65, for the euthanasia costs
alone, several years ago. ( I cannot believe Cherokee has been gone
eight years) We always bury the pet at home; it's just something we
do.
If I rented a house/apartment, I'd consider cremation though.

We own the land our mobile home is on, so we couldn't bury poor Mutt here :(

That is a horrible story, and the girls at the desk *should* have
showed more respect for your loss. They're in the pet biz after all,
for goodness sakes, they of all people should understand how to behave
toward a client bringing a beloved pet in for cremation.

It IS a horrible story, and every time we drive by there,  I get so hissed
again.  When we took Mosey in one time I told 'our' vet what had happened,
and gave him the name of their 'practice', and he was astonished and gave me
a big hug and said how sorry  he was for our loss and he was sad  that they
weren't open the day we really needed them.  Now that's a kind, caring vet.
:)
Who knows, maybe he called them and told them off.
It was 5 months ago, and we still miss our 6 toed Mutt.
The Dr and Mosey are good friends.
He goes "Hi Buddy", n Mosey goes Mmrrrrrt?
LOL.
His hoomins at the desk are so kind and caring, too.
Mosey is going to write him a thank you card for taking such good care of
him:)  Well, enough with the bad TED story,
Thank you for your kind reply.

I had the individual cremation for both Frank and Nikki, because I
specifically wanted to scatter their ashes on the island. It probably
cost a lot, but I don't remember and I'm still not ready to dig out the
receipts and look at the cold hard facts.

Nikki was an emergency and our regular vet wasn't open on that Sunday
morning, so she went to the vet school. They didn't send me anything but
the bill. Frank's vet didn't send a card either, but I can't fault them
because the vet, who officially does not do home calls, came to our home
to send Frank away in the peaceful and comfort of his home.

When I had to have my Scooter Dog PTS, I got a card from the vet, two
carnations from the tech.  I had her cremated and because of her weight, it
cost me $125.00.  Her ashes were returned in a beautiful scrowsaw decorated
box, with a man made Rainbow stone and a card with the Rainbow Bridge poem
on it.  There was also a little metal tag, burned, with a number on it.  In
another month we will take her ashes to the river and send them on to be
with Bob.  There just was no other choice.  Best money I have spent in a
long time.  It gave closure to a lot of things.  This will happen when Miz
Pig passes because se was his cat.  Kids have promised to do this if I leave
this earth before she does.
