First, why on earth would you want to.

Second, if I remember right from a very smelly visit to a sugar mill,
molasses is a by product of sugar production.  If thats the case, molasses
would be left over after the sugar was made.

I want to make cookies and am out of brown sugar, and DH is on his way to
Chicago to visit his mother before her surgery tomorrow so I have no way to
get to the store, and you are correct, it is a by product, I am trying to
figure out if A. I can do it, and B if the senior moment I appear to be
having is a real or imagined memory I am recalling incorrectly, Lee

I did a quick search (molasses make brown sugar) and found out:
You need ordinary white granulated sugar and molasses. The recommended
amounts I saw used were 1 cup of sugar and 1-2 tablespoons of molasses
stirred together evenly (with a fork, but use whatever you want). Amount
of molasses depends on how dark brown sugar you want.

I think, before I attempted it, I'd either borrow from a neighbor, get a
neighbor's kid to go to the store for me, or forget about the cookies
until my DH returned. ;-)

Most commercially available brown sugar is nothing more than regular
sugar mixed with molasses.

I'm sure it's possible, since IIRC molasses is derived from cane syrup,
brown sugar is merely a refinement of that (and white sugar a refinement
of brown sugar).  However, given the relative prices of molasses and
brown sugar (at least in the U.S.) why would you WANT to?
Matthew - 25 Apr 2008 20:46 GMT
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon molasses (more or less, depending on how dark you need the sugar
to be)  You want it darker add another teaspoon
A bowl, large enough to hold a cup of sugar during vigorous stirring
A fork
An airtight plastic container

Step 1
Pour the sugar into the bowl
Step 2
Add the molasses.
Step 3
Stir with the fork. It looks impossible at first, but suddenly, I promise,
it will start to mix in and begin to look like brown sugar. Keep going until
all the molasses has been incorporated.

Be sure to store the sugar in an airtight, tightly sealed container, as it
will harden into a bricklike substance just like the kind you buy in a store
