Litter box problem

Up until recently, both Lindy and Nanki-Poo have scorned litter boxes,
preferring to do their business outdoors.  I expected a problem when
Nanki-Poo's radiation treatments started, because I have to block the cat
door part of each treatment day to make sure Nanki-Poo is in the house when
I need to put him in the cat carrier.  For this reason, I have put a litter
box in the bathroom, and leave it there all the time.

For some reason, Lindy has decided to use the litter box even when the cat
door is not blocked.  That would be okay, except that she seems unclear on
the concept.  Once I saw her with her front feet in the box, digging.  Her
entire rear end was outside the box.  I picked her up and put her in the
box, so she immediately left the box, and the room.  Apparently she did get
the idea that you get entirely into the box.  However, that is not doing a
great deal of good.  Most of the time when she uses it, she goes in one
corner, and most of it goes on the floor.  My bathroom no longer smells so
bad since I got Nature's Miracle, but it is a pain to have to keep mopping
up the floor.

Any suggestions for getting her to go all the way inside the box?

pick her up put her in the box  take her front paws and use them to dig
make sure she is in the center of the box

you can always get a bigger box or a covered box

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've only seen her getting ready to use the box once.  Usually she does it
when I'm not there.  I wasn't even sure she was the one doing it until I saw
her in action.

I have no idea whether she'd use a covered box.  Some cats won't use one, I
understand.  Also, money is a bit tight right now.  Still, I'll consider it.

don't pay big money for a "official litter box"  get a Rubbermaid or similar
container, leave the lid off if it has high sides and try that, if that
doesn't work, put on lid and cut an entry way, cheaper and sturdier as well,

take her in there even if she is not ready  that is how I did it  they will
get the picture they can smell what the box is about

I use plastic tubs from Wal-Mart  they are 2.50 each  heavy duty  the ones
you slide under a bed for storage.  They get cracked or worn out  2.50 won't
kill you on replacement

When I had on cat the had problems with the covered boxes  I took  and cut
the opening bigger and added holes to the side up towards the top to give
them more security

get a higher sided box, then she and her stuff are contained, Lee

Sounds like you need a bigger box! Or one of those litter boxes with
high sides... Scouty's always had problems getting her rear end
entirely inside the box, so we use one of those 'under-the-bed'
storage boxes for a litterbox - it's just bigger enough than a
standard box that she can stand in it sideways, making success much
more likely!

I guess I could try something like that.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I've got litterboxes with lids.  Fixed that problem right up.

Thank you, kili.  I'll have to price those when I go to Target.  A huge
proportion of my budget these days is going toward radiation treatments for
Nanki-Poo.  That doesn't leave much for other things.

You might get a better price at Wal Mart, IDK.  Just a thought.
OR go to a Dollar Store and find a big pan there:)
Ya never know.
