They're not having any...

CatNipped - 05 Apr 2008 22:36 GMT Since we now have another mouth to feed I figured I'd try and find another food besides Fancy Feast - something that comes in a larger can for a better value. The only thing I made sure of was that it had good ingredients (meat, broth and organ meat as the first three ingredients). So I bought Iams, Science Diet and Natural Choice in a variety of flavors. This evening when I put the new food down everybody went over to their bowls to investigate the new smell, looked at their bowl, sniffed again, looked at me and everybody except Jessie walked away - Jessie tried to bury it before walking away.
I'm going to give it another couple of tries, but it looks like I'll have to find some stuff to give up from my own diet (I *really* don't need those Baked Lays on my thighs anyway), and go back to feeding them the Fancy Feast. But geez Louise, $7 a day for cat food is a LOT!

And Science Diet. Haven't tried Iams. I also wish they'd make FF in a more economical big can for multi-cat households. Sherry

They need time to contemplate where their next dining experience is coming from. Wait awhile. Bast bless you for keeping Hunter. Stomachs will prevail.

But geez Louise, $7 a day for cat food is a LOT! Have you checked Wellness and done a comparison of actual cost? It comes in three sizes of cans and it is better quality than FF. In the long run, it may not cost any more and could actually end up costing less if you use the larger can. I found that my twosome did not even need as large a quantity of Wellness to maintain their weight as they had previously.

And I was wrong, w/tax it's $6.00 per day since they each eat 2 cans per day. So giving up my 2 bags of Baked Lays per week ($3.00/bag) will just about cover the extra $7.00/week for Hunter.

You would have to pay for shipping if you order online, but I wait for PetFoodDirect's "good" discount coupons. I get the 5.5 oz. cans, and I just ordered some with a 22% discount coupon. The coupon covered the cost of shipping.

I'm going to print out this note and let DH figure it out to see if that would be cheaper for us. I didn't realize that Wellness came in 12.5 oz. cans. How often and where do you find the coupons?

Enfilade - 06 Apr 2008 00:39 GMT Have you checked out Friskies? Those cans are twice the size and there is also an even bigger can. When we are tired of Fancy Feast- heads or when we are going away on vacation, we get a few Friskies cans because it is easier than feeding lots of little cans.
Failing that, we find that buying Fancy Feast in the 12-pack is usually cheaper than buying the individual cans.
(We still have to buy a few, because Kumani has declared that Fancy Feast Grilled Chicken is the ONLY kind of soft food she will deign to eat, this is after 4 years of trying to get her to eat ANY.)

Then watch your email, and watch it regularly. They send out frequent coupons that way, and each offer is only good for two or three days. Most of their offers are for 13% and 15%, but I wait for the 20% and 22% offers. Those seem to come about once a month. There have even been rare occasions with 25%.
The first time I called (when I was added to their email list), I asked the phone rep if she could check out the best coupons that were currently available. She did that and found a good offer for me, but not as good as the 22% I later got by email. I know there is also a web site for coupons that some people on this NG have used, but I have not tried that.

I mean, could you buy several cases? You can buy any quantity you want, but you can only use each coupon once. I usually buy 3 cases (5.5 oz. cans in cases of 24 cans) because it's too heavy for me to lift if I order more than that. They usually ship the entire order in one carton. Incidentally, be sure to look for the varieties without grains. That's true of most Wellness varieties but not all.

So, unless FF goes up, since it's a good formula and they really like it, it's still a better buy for us. Like I said, I'll just give up some of the junk food I'm eating - good for both my waistline and my pocketbook! ;>

I've wondered if it has to do more with texture than taste. The only other food besides FF they'll eat is Whiskas. I have no idea whether it's texture, taste, or what, but they sure stick together on this.

It did take me awhile to get Holly and Duffy to eat Wellness. Prior to the time I adopted Duffy, Holly had been free-feeding on dry food. She was beautiful and happy and certainly seemed healthy. Duffy, of course, was another matter. He had been at a shelter for several months and ate "whatever" was available, but it was always donated dry food. He was very thin, and shelter staff told me he did not eat well. It was also very noisy (dogs barking) at the shelter, and he was under stress from being caged in that environment for so long. At the same time, I am truly grateful for shalter staff who kept him alive for so long when their policy only calls for a minimum of 14 days. It is a kill shelter, but they really wanted to find a home for Duffy.
At just about the same time as I adopted Duffy, I had been doing more reading about the benefits of a canned food diet. I decided to use exclusively a premium canned food approach, and both cats resisted. Ironically, Duffy was more resistant to change than Holly. I started out by putting some dry food on top of the canned food, pressed into it a bit. I would leave the food out for 30 minutes to an hour, then removed any that had not been eaten. I did this twice a day, on a 12-hour schedule. Neither cat ate much for the first few days, and I felt like an ogre. I worried and went through real guilt feelings at seeing my babies being denied the dry food they wanted.
Well, they now are happy with their food. They bounce in -- tails held high -- when I call them for meals, and they are thriving. They will come for me and "remind" me if I am late. The change in Duffy is most obvious because he was so thin and scruffy when I adopted him. However, I was surprised at even the physical change in Holly. She had been gorgeous and always got a good bill of health from the vet, but she did have dandruff. That was very visible on her black coat, of course. After the change in diet, I suddenly realized that there was *no* dandruff and her fur was now the most glossy coat imaginable. She will be 13 years old in early June, but she looks and acts like a very young cat.
Incidentally, I adopted Duffy on Jan. 31, 2003. Holly was adopted the day after Thanksgiving in 1995. It's hard to believe that it has been more than 12 years since I adopted Holly and 5 years for Duffy.

Hope yours doesn't follow suit. That four cents really adds up when you're buying in bulk. PetSmart still sells it for .46 on sale occasionally. I remember when I first started feeding that stuff it was .32 a can.

I buy the 13-oz* cans, but the store where I buy it always gives you 4 cans for the price of 3. And their price for each can, even without the bonus, is competitive with a pet food warehouse store that *doesn't* give you the 4th one free.
It's more expensive than Friskies, but not terribly much more, especially given the benefits. Roxy's herpes, for example, is a lot less symptomatic since I've been feeding them Wellness.
(However, I did run out early in the week, and because of the store's location and hours, plus my work schedule, it's not possible for me to go there except on weekends. So I've been feeding Roxy and Smudge Friskies this week, and lord, you'd think they'd been starving for months. The kitties do love their junk food!)
*(Not sure how to translate 13 oz to metric - it came out to 384 cubic centimeters, but I don't know whether that's any more meaningful.)

They are just not used to that particular smell of food. It has happened with Laku too, when I had to change his food brand fairly quickly, without easing out the old stuff mixed with the new, as the old brand was discontinued. He would just stare at the bowl and not eat, but in the end the stomach won and he ate it. And now he's been eating that brand for a few years. Also when they change something in their recipes Laku tends to notice and not want to eat for a while, but then he goes for it again...
