CatNipped - 02 Apr 2008 13:53 GMT I finally found a little extra money to vet Garvin. I finally got Ben receptive (partially, at least) to the idea of spending that extra money on Garvin.
We woke up this morning to find the ceiling in the guest bedroom had caved in. Apparently the A/C unit in the attic has frozen up and overflowed causing the ceiling collapse and soaking the carpet on the second floor of the house.

Surely your homeowners' insurance will pay out on that. (But if your policy is like ours, we have a large deductible just so we can get the premiums down to an affordable rate). Even aside from the $$$$, I'm sorry you have to go through the hassle of getting things fixed.

Yep, as I just told Sherry, we have a $5,000 deductible. I'm ready to just pull the carpet up even if we have to live with bare plywood floors - the carpet has to be from the original build in 1974, it's so grungy (this was the "fixer-upper" we bought and closed on 2 weeks before I lost my job and had to take one at half the pay - so obviously it never got fixed). Oh well, such is life!

Granby - 02 Apr 2008 14:45 GMT Seems most insurance, to be able to afford it, has such high deductibles. I had medical insurance that started out at $400.00 a month, with a three thousand deductible. Never used it for 20 years, it is now up six hundred fifty a month. Had to give it up this winter. Medicate hurry.
House insurance the same way. Still have it but, it is at this point, basically useless and am just donating. On Apr 2, 7:53 am, "CatNipped" <CatNip...@PossiblePlaces.com> wrote:

Victor, would you be willing to serve as Paypal recipient for Catnipped's benefit? I'd be glad to chip in a bit to help get the Oring Stripey Guy taken care of.

I'd only want to do that if I could pay it back in installments (or pay it forward if you guys want to start an emergency fund like we used to have). I wouldn't take it at all if it weren't for Garvin (we can live with a broken ceiling until we can get it fixed). But he is worth being humble enough to accept help to get him vetted and inside where he's safe. In any case, if you guys don't think you can do it, Ben and I will still find some way to get him situated - he's already come a long way from the almost starved, scared little boy he was two weeks ago!
Bast's blessings on you Dan for your kindness!

I really understand. I just found out that Nanki-Poo's treatments may cost from $1,000 to $3,000 more than the original estimate. Figuring at the low end, I'm withdrawing about 1/4 of my IRA to cover the treatments. :-(

Word of caution: go ahead and have the "penalty" taken out ahead of time (unless it's a Roth IRA) even after having the applicable Fed & State taxes taken out. It will pinch but it's not as bad as the IRS coming after you down the road. And trust me, they take what we do with our own money very seriously.

We had to cash out our IRA when we got the house, lost our jobs and had about 8 other disasters at the same time. We held back 40% for taxes but come tax time the next year we still owed over $5,000 to unca Sam!

I'm old enough that the only penalty I pay is if I don't take out enough each year. However, I really hate having to take out that big a bite of it when the market is so low. It was worth more a month or two ago. I will have to pay income tax on it, which is hard enough when you're on Social Security, but that's the way it goes. Nanki-Poo's welfare comes first.

When Archer broke his leg we ended up spending close to $2,000 when it was all said and done. The good news is that there are a lot more things that can be done to heal/cure our pets, the bad news is that it's beginning to cost as much as human medical treatment.
