We have been out of town for only a few days and all kinds of strange
things have been taking place in the rpca. We obviously need to beef
up the security at the doors! I wonder if there is a security cat
that can smell troll before it gets within 30' of the front door? Any
way, we were in Rio Rancho, NM judging a state championship bbq cook
off. We had a wonderful time watching participants prepare their
smokers and their food, we enjoyed the pig races and wandering through
the vending areas. I almost bought a stone bear for Joel. The only
reason I hesitated is that the guy selling his wares didn't look
american indian and I know Joel would prefer his bear fetish to be
authentic North American Native Indian. On Saturday we judged bbq.
There were at least 60 teams and 60 judges met for the judging. Six
judges judge six teams. We judged chicken, ribs, pulled pork, and
brisket. Then as ancillary contests we were allowed to judge:
anything butt (pork, ribs, chicken, brisket), beans, sides (anything
except beans) and desserts. We ate for about 3 1/2 hours. Wow! So I
came home on Sunda, caught up on sleep and didn't really get a chance
to catch up with everyone so rather than try now I'm sending out
blanket purrs and gentle headbutts and best wishes from me.
For us, today was vet day and boy did I feel it. I supported our vet
to the tune of $900 today <sigh> but before I explain I will say that
while I was waiting on some x-rays on Lacey her vet came in and said
while the x-rays were developing she was going to go council a couple
about putting their baby to sleep. While Lacey and I were waiting for
Barnabus to be brought to us the couple left with an empty towel. I
thought about the $900 I spent vs an empty towel and decided I'd
rather spend $900 as long as God is willing for me to do so.
Two weeks ago during Barnabus' yearly annual it was decided he needed
to have his teeth cleaned. The only problem is that Barnabus is a
scardy cat. He has to hide under a blanket to allow anyone but the
two of us to handle him. So I took him out of the carrier and the vet
tech placed a blanket over his head and he settled down. When I
returned for him the vet was laughing and said she had scolded the vet
tech for leaving a cat on the table unattended but the vet tech, who
was in the room but gathering supplies said, "As long as he has his
blanket on top of his head he's not moving. The vet said after a few
minutes observations she realized the tech was right. Barnabus was so
frightened he wouldn'l leave the security of his blanket. They said
after he woke up from the anesthesia he crawled under his blanket and
was as quiet as a church mouse until I came to get him.
He didn't need any teeth pulled so he only had cleaning, polishing and
x-rays.
Lacey went in for her annual exam and rabies and it was time for her
distemper booster shot. As a senior cat she also gets senior blood
work. The vet thought she heard a heart murmmur so we added
urinalysis and x-rays. She has a slightly elongated heart so next
stop is the specialist and an ultrasound. I'll get that done sometime
this week. I want to hear from the blood work before going for the
ultrasound. She had a slightly enlarged thyroid and had lost a small
amount of weight since her last visit, but the three other visits
she'd lost a small amount of weight as well. She has established a
pattern for losing weight each year.
She is a good patient, although she prefers to be in her carrier, she
doesn't have to be covered in a blanket. They both received a
microchip so now if they are somehow put in a situation that frightens
them and they run I should be able to find them. I suspect the two
big boys, who think every visitor to our house comes specifically to
visit with them would simply return home by the time they think dinner
will be served. Lacey and Barnabus hide under the bed when we have
visitors and I doubt they would come to me if I was outside calling
their names if they were scared.
Anyhow, purrs on the way for everyone who has needed them over the
last five days. Gentle headbutts as well. Lacey says she'll let
everyone know how things go at the specialist as soon as meowmy knos
anything.

Lots of purrs for the babies. Mir says she'll come and hide under the
bed with Barnabus next time you have visitors. She's a little braver
than him. She does come on the island when I call her. Doesn't let a lot
of other people near her.

Purrs for the owners coming from here. Did you get a tummy ache from all
that spicy chili? I wouldn't have dared try judging anything like that.
Please keep us informed about the owners and let us know when and where the
next cook off is going to be. Maybe we can hook up a meet and greet for you
and Rusty.

A very good friend of mine and her husband are on a BBQ team. This is the
time of year when they start going all over the mid-south competing. Those
things are a lot of fun! (But much more work than I'd care to have to do!)

That's funny about the blanket. Persia hides her face in my armpit (or the
tech's armpit). I guess she thinks if she can't see us we can't see her,
either. LOL

Thanks everyone for the purrs. The vet called today to tell me that
Lacey's blood work looks OK and her thyroid tests are normal (concern
because her thyroid felt slightly large) but that there was a
significant amount of blood in her urine. She told me that they might
have contaminated the urine when she took the sample but that she
didn't believe so. They're getting a different urine test done
(provided there is enough urine available from the cultures already
done) and recommend that I have an abdominal x-ray as well. So, I
have an appointment on Thursday for the abdominal x-ray to make sure
we don't have kidney and/or bladder stones and I still have to make an
appointment for the ultrasound of the heart. Lacey is going to be so
very mad at me before all of this is over!!

Heh. That's Yoda. He's a face-hider, too. He just turns so pitiful

sack

Poor scared kitties. Licky did the same thing the few times I've
recently had to bring him to the vet. Stuck his head into the crook
of my arm. I was so touched, because usually at home he acts like
*I'm* the threat. But in this strange, new, and evil place, I was
his best friend, the most familiar thing he had to hang on to. Heh,
guess he figured out which side his bread was buttered on. :)

Awwwww, poor scared kitties indeed.
Mosey just gets hissed when we put him in the carrier, but he does just fine
with TED, and puts up with the 'temperature taking indignity'
and when he got his shot to get rid of the nasty ringworm that was eating
all his food.
He's got a follow-up in a week or so. I think he's doing better. I picked
him up and he sure feels heavier. Bless his little heart. He's my little
'pen pal' writin buddy:)
He harffed up his chicken cat food today, so I gave him some chicken baby
food and he kept that down okay. I think he just scarffed the other canned
food too fast.

Miranda is the one who hides her face under my arm. Caliban is too
curious about everything going on around him, and too busy hissing at
any cats in the cages, to hide his face anywhere.

Persia is *very* good at the vet. When I had her 'chipped after her great
escape she didn't even squeak (and that's a darned big needle). But the
last time we were in for a checkup the moment I set her on the table she
leapt down and jumped into her carrier. "Okay, I'm ready to go! Take me
home now." :)

When I took Barnabus in for his annual exam the first thing they did
was weigh him. As I was taking him off the scales he hooked his claws/
paws on the edge of the exam table and the rest, as they say is
history. The tech moved the scale at the same time Barnabus pulled
and he slipped out of my hands but I unbalanced him and he fell off
the table. I called his name rather loudly, because I thought I saw
him fall on his back. He got frightened and ran to the corner of the
room, under some chairs and cowered. He's always been afraid of going
to the vet but this only increased the tension. I'm hesitant to try to
pick up a frightened cat since I've experienced the consequences in
the past. I set the carrier down near him and he was quick to get
back in. When I took him out of the carrier for the vet to exam him
he curled up into a ball, just like a pill bug. I set him on the
table and we quickly covered him with the towel. When I took him back
to have his teeth cleaned I made an effort to be very calm and relaxed
on the way and while we were waiting. I don't think it helped a lot
but hopefully I didn't add to his stress.
When we got home after his dental he was a wobbly, doped up kitty
cat. He has his bed on the top of the 10' armoire. The vet suggested
I try to keep him from jumping and cats are pretty good at determining
what they can and cannot reach in a single leap. Several hours after
we got home I went into the bathroom and closed the door. I heard
claws on the furniture and realized he'd made the leap <sigh>.
Fortunately, he did make it. I came out of the bathroom to find him
looking down at me from up high.
