Kreisleriana - 31 Mar 2008 19:10 GMT Dear fellow kitties, be very careful. Your mommies and daddies and grandmas may sweet talk you and tickle you in places you like, and give you treats and nip, but behind it all may be a BIG NEEDLE THAT THEY STICK IN YOU and expect you to just put up with it!!
I have always prided my self on being a civilized gentlemen, but by Ceiling Cat, THERE ARE LIMITS!!!
Is this the thanks I get for almost 17 years of devoted mousie and greebling control, relaxation therapy, rather high-level comedy, if I say so myself, and endless snuggles, kisses and purrs?
Up with it I shall not put!!!
Stinky
Theresa here: Oh my darling, if only I could make you understand. And he didn't. As I feared, on his home turf, Stinky was a much tougher patient than in the vet's office. Even with Mom helping, I failed twice to get him to keep still, get the line to stay in, managed to spray us all with subQ fluid, and got Stinky thoroughly PO'd with us-- making those jungle-cat noises, as we tried to hold him.
I'm actually feeling frustrated as I read all these web accounts of how "easily" different cats take their treatment. I feel so useless. I think I'd rather read some accounts of cats who were tough at first, and improved.
I know I've asked for much more than our share of purrs in the past few days, but it's for everybody'd pal, Stinky. Please, please keep 'em coming.

Try having Mom stuff treat kibbles in his mouth while you do the dirty work below. Another person to hold the rear end may help. Stinky don't get that you are trying to save his 9 lives.
Granby - 31 Mar 2008 19:16 GMT Prayers and purrs for stinky. I know when you hurt them, in order to help them it is the same as with people, you can't win. Hang in there, it will get better.

And hopefully he'll start associating feeling better with the SubQ and won't be as fractious.

Of course, Theresa. Never hesitate to ask. We are all pulling for Stinky. And for you. I hope with time, you will get more skilled with the subq and Stinky will relax. I'm so sorry you two are having to go through this.

I agree with Marina , Theresa,, it can get frustrating, but you're doing the best thing for Stinky. We had to give out cat Big Bart (now RB a long time ago) IV treatments, and it wasn't pleasant for any of us. But PUUUUUUURS for both you and Stinky, for the best possible outcome. Hug Kyla Mosey sends Stinky a healing <nosepoink> from across the water.

On the other hand, the fact that he's being difficult is a good sign, I guess. I've given fluids to cats who were too weak to protest. It was easy for me, but not so great for the poor kitties.
I can understand feeling even more inadequate when everyone's telling you how easy it is. But I don't think it always starts out so easy. I just think that you will master it, once you get the hang of it. I don't just mean the needle stick, but controlling the little beast, too.

A combo of canned and freh-cooled chicken got his juices flowing, and he put it away and held it down.
Then, after I finally got his damn fluids into him, one of the ways he found to express his displeasure with me was to puke it all back up right in front of me. Ouch.
PS, he has his head inside a can of Fancy Feast chicken feast in gravy right now.

> PS, he has his head inside a can of Fancy Feast chicken feast in gravy right > now. My guess, off the top of my head: he is feeling better because of the fluids he has already received (at the vet's). This has given him back some of his appetite. And that caused him to vacuum down his food, maybe a bit too fast? So maybe eating too fast, combined with stress from having to get the fluids at home, caused him to puke. As you can see, his appetite is still OK. :)
How's his energy level, since he's been back home? I always noticed, with my CRF cat, that she would perk up very noticeably, about a half-hour after getting fluids. Flushing out the toxins really helped her feel a lot better.

It's not great overall. It's a great relief to see him eat.

> Unfortunately, he's been pretty grumpy and sulky, mostly. Aww, poor Stinky. :( He's having a hard time with all this. Well, he's been to the Evil Place, and now his favorite humans are holding him down and poking him with something sharp. I guess I'd sulk, too. Purrs for him to get used to it, so he can enjoy the benefits. You, too!

My vet never offered fluids for Kitty Farmcat, she is too old to benefit. May Stinky live a long time, I am fond of him.

Whatever your equipment, YOU DID IT as someone named "Dora" says on tv to kids. Now you will be able to do it again and Stinky will come around and get used to it. Maybe his meals after the subQ and a treat morsel or two after them?

Please, please keep 'em > coming. This is just an idea, OK? Do you have a friend nearby that would let you go to their house with him to give his subq? just to take him out of his home where he feels brave to fight against it. He might feel intimidated enough like at the vets to allow it. I do understand,Theresa. KFC has CRF but there is no way I could give Subq to her, she would not allow it under any circumstances. I have chosen to let her life take its course. She is very comfortable snoozing in front of the fire. In your position, what would I do? I would ask the vet what is the best option, take it on board and make my own decision. Sometimes mine is better.

I think > I'd rather read some accounts of cats who were tough at first, and > improved.//// I know it's not sub-Q, but Robbie is not known as the "ginger ninja" by me and his vet for nothing...
When TED said he had to be on pills for the rest of his life, my heart SANK! By getting into a routine, and making a *HUGE* fuss of him after he takes his pill, after 6 months, we've finally got to the point where he doesn't put me in the ER every day! He's pilled in the same spot every day, and I wait until he's curled up, relaxed, sleepy and quiet - if I try to pick him up or catch him to pill him, he'll nail me - and I have the butterfly stitches in my hand to prove it from last Sunday!
Try to establish some sort of routine. Also, explain what you are doing to him before doing it and try to center yourself so that you are feeling calm (difficult, I know). And..... best of luck and purrs en-route.
