I declare that comparing anyone to "the Taliban" is making a modern version
of the Godwin, thus I am going to name the use of "Taliban" as an insult in
Usenet as Yowie's corrollary to the Godwin's Law, such like:

> .... do battle
> with these intolerant folks who bear more than a passing
> resemblance to the taliban because they don't have the same
> kind of almost religious fervor over this issue.

Do I get my name on some cool news.news FAQ now?

Lotta Godwin dudes in your country when I googled the name.
Every one of them Net description way over my head. I didn't
love that reference either but can't connect it with any Godwins.
A slightly more sophisticated insult than the usual four-letters.

She was referring to "Godwin's Law" which states that the moment Nazis
or Hitler is mentioned in a Usenet flame war, the discussion is officially
over. This is because the insult-throwing has reached its logical extreme,
and cannot deteriorate any further. Time to pack up and go home. So Yowie
is simply updating the concept to include the Taliban, since they (and hey,
Yowie, how about adding Al-Queda too?) are our modern boogeymen.

Hmm... someone mentions declawing in here and they get a bunch of angry
responses, which they then compare to a regime that *kills* people when
they don't tow (toe?) the political line. Does anyone see a lack of
perspective here?

I have "chosen people" bloodline on one side, and I did not appreciate
a
comparison to that older regime. Exactly my point. You have been a lot
more patient with that whole declawing inquiry (or not) than I am. To
me
this indicates you are a more patient person than I am (not better,
just
different...patience is a virtue IMHO only a matter of opinion). As I
said,
I neither "plonk" nor "killfile" as I find vast entertainment in much
of the
present drivel posted by those whose brains are not in gear while
their
fingers tap out stuff on here. I found nothing funny re the declawing
thread, however. Difference between drivel and troll....you agree?

I agree that some of her attitude was hostile, but I actually don't think
she was a troll. I think she had a genuine inquiry, but was also very
defensive when she didn't get the response she was expecting.

But I did think it was a good opportunity for me to express my ideas,
opinions, information and suggestions regarding alternatives to declawing.
(Other people did, as well, and I think we had a number of good posts
on the subject.) I don't see any harm in doing that - in fact, I think
the information might do someone some good, even if not the OP (or her
poor kitty). But who knows, maybe even the OP.

Actually, I killfile most people who post what I would consider drivel.
I don't want to put the time into reading it. So you see, I'm not quite
as patient as you might think. :)

OR you probably don't have the really mean, odd sense of humor I do.
Yes, I think for those who needed it you and others did post a lotta
useful 411 and websites. The person (see, I can be "sweet" too) also
quoted a bunch of websites out of context to suit her (his) point.
We've got to get Matt off that h&b where the hackers hang out now.
He knows not whom he messes with, to rephrase a Easter dogma word.

Odd, yes. That I have noticed. :) But mean? I've never noticed that.

Thank you for the explanation of Godwin. I never would have deduced
that
from the assortment of Godwins I got googling, even some old military
dude who was shipped to OZ as a convict a long time ago.
BTW I am beside myself today, and not with glee. It snowed last night.
Nasty surprise on looking outside this am. Oh to be back in the
Golden State, sitting beside the Boardwalk in SantaCruz, eating salt
water taffy and watching the surfers battle the ice water waves and
dodging the sea lions!

Here too, near Seattle, but we've had 'record lows for the record
highs for 30+ years now.'
Did that make any sense?
Whatever, it's c-c-cold here
