Chester and the baby gates

Hi all:

We have had to baby proof the house and this has entailed the
installation of 3 baby gates:  one at the top of the basement stairs and
one and the top and bottom of the staircase leading to the second storey.

Of course, we had to consider the cats during the installation!!

These gates are different from the ones in the old house in that these
slats are not far enough apart for the cats to squeeze through them.  Uh oh.

The one at top of the basement stairs has to be high enough off the
ground that the cats can get under (their litterboxes are downstairs)
but not high enough that the baby can slip under it.  We got it high
enough that the boys can *just* get under.  If they're in a hurry, it's
touch and go.  It's kind of fun to see just exactly how flat they can
squish themselves and it doesn't seem to cause them too much trouble.

It's the upstairs gates that may cause Chester some grief.

The ones at the top and bottom of the stairs are fixed onto newel posts
but can't be raised high enough off the ground for the cats to squeeze
under.  The boys have to squeeze between the stair railings on the sides
and down onto the stairs.  Otis slips through without disturbing a
single piece of his silky fur.

Chester's another story.  I saw him racing down the stairs and then
trying to deke out through the railing onto the floor beside.  He got
high centered for a second, stuck between the posts!!!  He slithered
through okay but he'll definitely have to watch it.  Luckily, summer's
coming up so he'll get trim for that :-)

You will need to set up a video camera there so AFHV can pay you 10,000 when
one of them gets stuck

Well ... if I could bear seeing my otherwise dignified cat humiliated on
TV ;-)

I keep showing the stuffy gentle cats picture but it fits here:

that I'd have the heart!!

Now with pictures it makes sense that they have a problem with the gates.
Molly and Jake lack that sort of dignity.  Totally.

They get a great deal of satisfaction out of being able to jump over
barriers and up on counters.  Particularly since Kayla either can't or at
least doesn't know she can.

Though Molly will sit patiently to ask me to open the gate to the back yard
for her.  She can go over or under or around, but likes the service.

Awwww - you see the problem ;-)

Otis is an extremely athletic cat still at 12 years old.  Chester
prefers to use his intellect to get him out of scrapes, rather than to
break a sweat.

Reminds of an anecdote I've told before of the cats with the oscillating
sprinkler.  Otis would run across the yard to see me and be completely
surprised and horrified when the sprinkler would swing back and soak
him.  He's got the metabolism of a border collie.  Chester would sit on
the grass and watch the sprinkler go back and forth.  At just the right
time, he'd calmly start walking the length of the sprinkler as it was
watering the other side!  My clever boy.

And you are well trained, of course :-)

That's a great story! I don't remember reading that one so I enjoyed
seeing it here. Chester could orchestrate world domination, if he so
desired. :)

That's funny!  When the 2 year old was here I put up a gate by the hall and
the laundry/furnace room.  Poor O. T. is so fluffy he got stuck trying to go
under.  He and Miz Piglet finally decided to scale it and plop over the
other side.  Willow is skinny enough she just slipped through the diamond
shaped parts.

Fluffy cats everywhere are troubled by baby gates :-)  That might make a
good cat pictures album ...

I recently saw in a magazine a picture of a baby gate with a built in cat
door, I thought at the time it was a good idea.

We had to dog-proof our house when Daisy arrived. We got baby gates with
wooden slats and made a cat-sized hole. Actually the first hole was too
big and turned out to be dog-head-sized so we had to put a second strut
across to prevent Daisy forcing her way through a 6-inch space :-)
It works very nicely now:

We have one barring the doorway into the kitchen and another at the
bottom of the stairs. For some reasons she's never tried to jump over,
thankfully!

LOL! Caliban could give Chester a few tips on dieting... I'm sure
Chester would be no happier with them than Caliban was. :P
