I took Stinky to the vet to get his second subQ, and to learn how to put the
line in myself. Well, I did it, and it was pretty easy -- at least with the
Stink-man in his usual vet-visit passive mode, and with the vet and tech
standing by. The big test for me come tomorrow when I give him his first
at-home treatment, when he is back in his usual Master of the Universe mode.
At the moment, Stinky is pretty annoyed about the water bump he sporting,
and walking around complaining about it-- actually a good sign!
After 7 days of subQ, he goes back to the vet to check his levels again.
Thanks everyone for all your purrs and all the good CRF info. Stinky wrote

So glad to hear from you. I was going to ping you, but figured you'd
report back to us. This sounds like positive news, and I know you'll
cope with the SubQ fluid therapy. Our son has a cat named Bud who's
about Stinky's age (another stray which I gave him). Bud's had
diabetes for a number of years. He gets insulin injections twice daily
and puts up a fight every time, but our son is soldiering on. If cats
only knew what we do (and pay) for their welfare! Hang in there,
Kreisleriana and Stinky, you have our ongoing purrs.

If you like, inform your son that I gave the first Hopitus (RB 10/89)
insulin injections with his meals, yeah, twice a day, plus monitoring
his blood sugar and he lived over 5 years after diagnosis of diabetes.
Diagnosing vet (who was in CA) told me most cats diagnosed do
not last but about 18 months *simply because their owners can't
handle the necessary routine and have them PTS*! So it really
is a labor of love and your son isn't on a futile quest. Diabetes is
NOT renal failure, however, and a dangerous (treatable)
complication of diabetes, as I'm sure your son is aware of by now,
is pancreatitis. Tell him to look out for "odd" behavior on the
part of Bud.

Purrs for your Master of the Universe from all of ours. I know two
people who have done this procedure and it worked well for both of
them. One of the cats, usually the feistier one, was docile for it and
the other was quite annoyed at the whole thing, but didn't make it
impossible.

Glad to hear it felt easy to do. Purrs for it to go as well when you do
it at home, and purrs for his levels to improve!

I am positive you will do fine with his therapy. See, is it as I said:
not so bad,
at all....more annoying to you than Stinky?
His name alone would endear him to my kind of people.
Although they have short memories, cats can get used to a lot of
strange goings-on.

After around two years of pilling Jake for CHF it seems to have dawned on
him that he feels better after he gets a pill. Or he's resigned to his fate
of something. Anyway, he actually comes up on the counter on his own and
sits there and waits for me to get his pill and give it to him. He doesn't
actually open his mouth for me, but there is no resistance and he doesn't
try to spit it back out either.
He is sending purrs that Stinky will be at least half that co-operative.
Cause it would make it easier for both him and his mom.

The Master of the Universe has a HUMP! hehehehehehehe!
I can see it now......
Dante: HEY BIG DOOD!! What did Mom do to ya?
Stinky: It was NOTHING...now go away...
Dante: Well it looked like....HEY you gots a HUMP!!
Stinky: Leave me alone.....
Dante: WOW! Where'd you get the hump? Can I touch it? Hey it's
SQUISHY! You gots a SQUISHY HUMP!
Stinky: (swatting) SCRAM!!!!
Excellent to hear that it went well
You could try wrapping Stinky in a towel/blanket so only his head is
sticking out. We call it a "Cat Burrito"
Also taking him into the bathroom and shutting the door helps too.
Keep us posted,
Kristi

This is very encouraging indeed. I know you will master it even in his own

Purrs that Stinky does well with this course of treatment, and gets lots
more time with good quality of life.

Lots of purrs for you and Stinky. I'm so sorry about the CRF and that
you have to do the subQ.
Stinky's such a neat character - I'm rather fond of your boyz :-) Glad
to hear he was a total angel at TED's and hope he figures out what's in
his best interest!!

Ohhhhh, having to give a kitty an IV is not fun, but we do what we gotta do
for our beloved cats. We had to do that back in 1999 with our Big Bart
> After 7 days of subQ, he goes back to the vet to check his levels again.
PUUURS for his levels to be just right

Awwwwwww, give him a kiss on the top of his little head from me
and Mosey sends Stinky a <nosepoink>
Tomorrow, when you do this alone, talk softly to him, tell him what a
wonderful brave boy he is and how much you love him, you know,
explain to him what you're doing, any why...he'll understand.
And will calm you nerves a little as well.
Hugs and Puuuuuuuuuuuurs

Purrs are continuing. I hope Phil P. comes over to this group to give some
advice on this. He is *very* knowledgeable about cat health. In fact, you
might try looking over his web site - you may find some helpful advice
there. http://www.maxshouse.com/
