Charleen and I were talking on Saturday evening and we've come up with
an idea. :o)

She mentioned that she has met several catslaves who live in the
Florida area. I've met several catslaves who live in the DC area. We
were thinking, as the idea has been muted several times, of perhaps
organising a Catslaves conference in Orlando next year. (18 months
away). The long time span would be to allow people to save up for
flights etc, there are a couple of people in the Orlando area who
would be willing to help organise stuff, and the reason i suggest
Orlando, is because we (me) can get cheap flights from Europe and we
(I) could tie it into a vaccation to visit Florida.

Who would be interetsted?

That does sound like a good idea, I suppose I'll have to renew my passport

I think it would be great! May I suggest putting together some kind of
poll to see if that is the meeting place that would attract the most
rpca folks? There are great airfare deals from Europe to pretty much any
major airport in the US. Some of the main ones that come to mind:

Houston (IAH)
Dallas (DFW)
Atlanta (I hear it's hell to fly through that one though)
Chicago (ditto)
NYC area (JFK, LGA)
Seattle (SEA)
Miami (MIA)

Something to think about. :)

Reason I suggested Orlando, is because Charleen is willing to try and
organise things at her end, but I like your idea. :)

I'd vote for Houston, naturally, but I'd be willing to go anywhere I could
get cheap airfare to (alas, do to budget constraints (i.e. we're broke) I
couldn't just fly anywhere at any time).

I love the idea.  Don't know if I could be there but you never know.

One concern counting forward 18 months would be September.  Isn't that the
heart of hurricane season?

I'm not sure.  We are going to San Antonio this September and then maybe  on
to Florida to see my sister, but i was worried about storms.  They aren't a
big deal for one family, you can scram like everyone else.  But it could
present a problem for a large group.

Eri, its miles away from a fair few of us (I'm in Sydney, Australia).
However, I am trusting that some very clever person can orgainise a video
conference so that those of us who can't physically be there can still join

I am all for it  the best time is between  June and August for Orlando
forget Miami  the price for hotels and flights are crazy.  The first week of
July is definitely out  NASCAR is in town.  Here in Orlando just for example
you can stay at a Disney resort starting at 82 a night but this is on Disney
property. Hotelcorps.com   is advertising hotels starting at $19 a night
near Disney

May is Prom season down here hotels are expensive.  Just be ready for the
Florida heat 120 with the humidity factor and it is a wet heat.  You can get
group rates pretty reasonable here in Orlando.  Plus you are near all the
attractions. There is no public transportation that is worth anything  so
renting a car is a must.  I know pretty descent restaurants that we can do
as a group

The Cheese Cake Factory
Sleuths mystery diner
Boston Lobster Feast
The Crab House
Rainforest Cafe
Texas de Brazil

Here in Orlando  me and Charleen can talk about some things  and help
everyone with everything

I hope we all can get together her.  I don't like to leave mom alone for to
long.  I spent a fortune calling her from the ship to make sure she was ok
everyday.  $7 dollars a minute.

For our overseas guest if they can come  Orlando MCO is an international
airport  plus we have Orlando-Sanford airport which caters to Europe
specially the UK

I was retired  found something to do on the side.  Going thru this
depression I found unless I get out of the house it gets worse so I found a
light job to do driving people around when the company needs help.  Easy
work good money good tips as long as the economy holds

I have no problems helping with the organization since I know Orlando like
the back of my hand  where all the good hotels are and the FOOD is oh yes
definitely where the FOOD is.  IF you are not fat now I will get you plump
by the time it is over.

They only thing is I AM NOT GOING TO DISNEY.  I will go to Animal Kingdom,
Epcot but not to the mouse house I have been 104 times no joke and I scream
when I hear it is a small world.  My family and friends comes down at least
four times a year and the first place they go is Disney and the first ride
and the last ride of the day has to be its a small world.  I swear I have
nightmare for a week after going thru that ride.  I get dragged on it and
have to listen to the kids whine if I don't :-(

MGM and Universal studios IMO are not worth the trip  plus I can't go on
some rides due to my own stupidity and gaining a whole bunch of weight since
all my problems began.  I blew up like a blimp you will all get to see when
I finally get my vacation pictures done

And there is no way anyone is convincing me of going to Busch gardens and
get on the roller coasters from hell

Do hurricanes really strike that hard, that far inland? I'd expect them
to have died down a lot by then. Usually they travel up the coast. The
ocean is what gives them their power.

In any case, I could certainly come to Florida. I try to get there on
a regular basis as it is.

But 18 months, that's a long time away from now. You mean Sept. of 2009,
right?

2004 august 13 charley hit it destroyed Florida  followed with the 3 other
hurricanes the last one was in late September.  I live over 30 miles from
the coast it let me with out power from 8/13 till 10/1. I had to use a
generator to live

august September early October is the height of hurricane season

not always true  they usually cross Florida heading to the gulf of Mexico.

I'm thinking between June and August 2009. That will give people a
chance to save $$ so that they can come. We'd keep it as cheap as
possible, say book a weekend as a convention at a reasonable hotel,
e.g Best Western, something like that, which is were Charleen and
Matthews encyclopeadic knowledge and charm offensives would come in,
with a couple of organised trips, a dinner event at a local restuarant
and I'm also wondering if we could have a few presentations/lectures
on cats too. (e.g. I'd be happy to ramble on about the Scottish
wildcat for 45 minutes).

If I may make a suggestion, it might be better to schedule a trip to
Florida, especially inland like Orlando, more like in February, rather
than the summer. It gets very humid there in the summer. Of course,
you've lived in Belize, so you probably wouldn't bat an eye at Florida's
humidity. :) But I would consider it unbearable.

January and February are actually the best months to go there. It's
after the holidays, so you don't have hordes of people travelling there
to visit their retired parents. And it's before Spring Break, so you
don't have to deal with a different horde, of hormonally overdosed
college kids. :) The weather at that time of year is really lovely. Not
that I've spent any time in Orlando, so I can't fully vouch for that.
But I've been in coastal places such as West Palm and Daytona, quite a
few times in mid-winter, and it's beautiful.

That might not work quite so well, savings-wise, though - as it would
give people less than a year to save up. So, FWIW...

You are right about the temperature   it is 67 degrees today it will 46
tonight with a wind chill factor make it in the 30's and the weather is
typical less than 80 with heat factor during the first couple months.

Just got to be careful down here in February  you got NASCAR AGAIN and the
home builders association and the golf tournaments that take over Orlando /
Tampa area.  Also bike week is at the end of February.  January is great
very slow time

Just to let you know Daytona Beach has changed they mark up their room and
the local restaurants are not very good you got to travel to Orlando or
St.Augustine for descent food.  During NASCAR and other event people go to
Orlando to stay it is cheaper.

Daytona is the pilgrimage this northern redneck has to make one day. They
don't call Daytona Speedweeks "Redneck High Holy Days" for nothing!  Any
location near a NASCAR event will have:

A) A lack of available hotel rooms
B) Rates for fleabag rooms, the only ones available, as much as the Waldorf
Astoria charges.

The "Quality Inn" in Newark, Delaware (really a Comfort Inn with an attitude
and a paint job) wants $299 a night with a 2-night minimum this June for the
Dover NASCAR race weekend, which this year coincides with the nearby
graduation ceremony for University of Delaware.  The two have been on the
same weekend before, but rates were never as much a BOHICA as this year.
We're staying in nearby Elkton instead for a third of that rate and dumping
that hotel we used for the last 15 years of race weekends.

Having lived on the Gulf Coast all my life I can attest to the above.
Mid-winter is MUCH preferable to summer - you'll some 78F days instead of
105+F.  Less humidity too (less like being smacked in the face with a hot,
wet towel.

I'd like to be a part of this, but it all depends on Rob and how things are
going here.  I really, strongly, deeply recommend that September is the
WORST time of the year to visit around here.  You're better off in October
or June.  Hurricanes are possible then, but less likely.  Most hurricanes
can be rode out, but I still wouldn't want to be a part of a hurricane party
in Orlando.  I do want to visit there and I love the idea of Tampa some day,
and Daytona sounds fun when the college kids aren't there.  Myrtle Beach
South Carolina has possibilities as does Savannah Georgia (I love that town
and I've only been there once) and Julie's stomping ground Atlanta GA.
Personally, I'm game for most anything, so long as I don't have to organize
it..  Too bad we can't do a catslave group cruise in the Caribbean.

You're *kidding*. That is really cheap!

I've never been on a cruise. It could be interesting. I tend toward
seasickness, but there are drugs for that... and it would solve the
humidity problem, too.

I was thinking a cruise also  I got a travel agent hookup at carnival and a
3 or 4 day cruise would run about a few hundred dollars.  I paid for a
single occupancy  double is cheaper with insurance and a descent room with
prepaid gratuities it was $460.00 that was 5 day 4 night cruise going to
Freeport and Nassau

For that price all the food and lodging included not bad for 5 days 92
dollars a day  heck hotel, food and gas would cost that much if not more

We have at least a 3 month waiting period in Florida and I believe it's
about $100 to get one.  Once you've actually gotten your passport it's a $75
renewal fee, I think.

To be honest, I wouldn't even know where to get one.  Didn't the post office
used to offer them?

They still do. They aren't fast, but it's pretty simple. You will need a
birth certificate, though.

I went online and filled out and printed out the application forms for us.
It will cost $125 each person for us to get the passport and the passport
card that we'll need.  After we get out pictures taken, we'll need to make a
passport appointment at the main post office here in town and show up with
the completed application, birth certificate or other approved proof of
citizenship, and a picture ID.  It can be a driver's license, State ID,
military ID card, or such.  The only things we need now are the photos and
the money to pay for the passports.  It was very easy to fill out online and
we were able to relax while I filled out the forms.

Really?  DH and I didn't need passports when we went on a cruise to Cancun

The keep changing the requirement   I had to get one before I left back than
it was 1/01/2008.  The day I applied for it the passport they changed it to
July of this year now I am not sure but from what I have been reading you
will be required to use a passport for any travel outside the US except to
US territories by 7/2009

back then).

I filled out and printed applications for passports for Rob and I, last
night.  We are supposed to get a tax rebate in May.  $250 ($125 each) of it
is going to the passport office.  We'll also need to get pictures taken and
submit 2 copies of each person's picture.  I read the specifications of the
photos.  They're complicated enough that we'll be going to a professional
passport photographer to have them done.  But the passports are being set
into motion as we speak.  I'm so excited.

Pam S. who would like to visit Canada again too.

I talked to Rob and he's game to try this.  So I'm now going to check out
passports and apply for both of us to get them.  I think the idea of a
cruise intrigues him and that is good.  Something to try for.  So, how many
of us would like a cruise and how many would prefer dry land?

Cruise:  1 (2 if I can count Rob)

I'll be glad to join y'all for the meet up, but not for the cruise. I
doubt my crowd-phobia would allow me to go on board a ship with a bunch of
folks without a ready means of escape.

I'd love to go on a cruise, and would vote for the cruise if we were going,
but we're not :-( (well, not physically). Shame you can't rent a yacht and
call it "the Mouser". LOL.

If we are going to get to the USA, then it won't happen in at least the next
5 years, as I'm trying to pay off a nasty credit card bill, which will take
about 5 years to go away. In 5 years time, the car will be at the end of its
lease and we'll be back to normal car ownership - which will cost less as I
won't be using up so many km's just to meet the contract, nor will I be
insuring it for $30,000 which is it curently insured for. The Yowlet will be
at school, yes, but as long as he hasn't reached the last 3 years of
highschool, taking a month out of school to go on vacation isn't such a bad
thing and I can cover what he's missed by myself (I trust...).

Aiming for 2018. It seems a very long time to go, but thats the reality of
the finances. Unless I get some windfall before then.

Y'all could of course decide to have an RPCA convention in Australia
somewhere (I'd recommend Sydney, but anywhere is good) and I'll promise to
attend that one :-)

I think a cruise sounds good.  I've never been on a commercial
cruise.  It would depend on the cost and what our finances are at the
time.
Actually, I'd really like to be in the loop regardless of the
location, land or sea, but I'm not able to make a committment yet.

Hmm...Orlando...haven't been there since about 1990.

I'd be up for trying!

Anything in the Washington, DC area, or north of New York City
would be good, too.

All assuming I could find someone to take proper care
of the furry beasties, of course...;)

I would defintely go for Orlando.  I'm just up north in Daytona Beach.

February is bad - Daytona 500 plus lots of smaller races so Dyatona is
overrun and it spills quite a bit into Orlando, especially Disney.
March - 1st two weeks is Bike Week, then comes Spring Break
July - race people back

I'm not sure about Orlando but all the beach area hotels double their prices
over winter because that is peak season.

What about May - it's not as hot here and the chance of hurricanes is small.

What exactly is the RPCA? I am interested especially if it is in Orlando. I
live just an hour east of Orlando, so it is pretty close to me, let me know
what is is all about. I may even be able to help some.

RPCA is this newsgroup - rec.pets.cats.anecdotes...  :)
And a meeting would gather up people who post here.
