I just found out my great-aunt Ernestina was run over by a bus in Mexico
City and is seriously injured. She is 80 something years old and was
leaving work when the accident happened. Yes, you read right. She still
works. She's a remarkable woman, really. Her family did not want her to
attend college, back then women were expected to marry a good guy and
have lots of kids. She had different ideas. She went to Chicago, where
she worked as an elevator attendant while attending university. She
later did graduate work in Paris, I think. She worked two jobs most of
her life, as a psychotherapist in a women's jail and as a professor and
researcher at the National University in Mexico City. She's written
several books and is a very well respected personality in her field.
She loves cats. There were always cats in her house. Lately I heard it
was getting a bit out of control, but that's another story.
Right now she's ailing in a hospital bed. I'm not sure if it's her time
to go or not, but could I have purrs for her to suffer as little as
possible?

She sounds wonderful, and I really hope she survives this. Broken bones
can be very tough on an old person, but she does sound strong. Purrs (which
I hope she gets literally as well as figuratively - they're very healing
and she obviously has the "machinery" in place) for her to heal soon.
I hope to be strong and well and in sound enough mind to be working at
80, too.

I hope I'm still able to work when I'm 80, because I sure don't see how

Prayers and purrs. For whatever is best for her. And for her family. It
doesn't sound as though she is anywhere near done living, eighty or not.

UPDATE:
I spoke with two of my sisters today. The one who is a physician says
it's very serious, our aunt has trauma in her head, a broken clavicle
and a broken hip. They can't do surgery to repair the hip (which is in
itself a very serious operation for somebody her age, she is 88) until
the inflammation of the brain subsides. My other sister was more
optimistic and she said the doctors said that if she survived the
first 48 hours, she would probably be able to make it So keep those
purrs coming!
Thanks.

Victor, I'm really sorry to hear this. She sounds like she was a wonderful
and fascinating person. It's a shame that it had to happen this way,
because of such a flukey accident. But living to nearly 90 years old is
really quite an accomplishment, when you think about it.
I hope she really did end up leaving her brother the house. I can see
leaving one's possessions to a University or charity, but only if there's
nobody left in your life who really needs them.
Purrs for her brother, the kitties, and the rest of your family. RIP
Ernestina.
