Four-Final Update-I wish it wasn't-Mar 22 08

Charleen Welton - 22 Mar 2008 13:02 GMT
I found Four collapsed the night of Thursday the 20th on my release and
return home from three days in the hospital. Larry, our roommate, and I
rushed him to the Emergency Vet in Orlando at midnight. The vet there gave
him pain relief medication for an injured leg and Sub Q as he was
dehydrated. Four had not eaten or drunk water while I was gone. The first
day I was in the hospital was apparently the first day he injured his leg
and was then unable to eat and drink water because of the pain.

Seven-thirty am Friday morning I took him to our regular vet. Four's knee
(rear right leg) is fractured. It is very, very painful. The fracture is in
an awkward position requiring a specialist to operate on it. His bones are
of very poor integrity, perhaps because of his FIV+ status. The prognosis
for the leg surgery is not good.

He has lost 1.5 pounds in 10 days indicating that something else is going on
with his body.

The blood work showed his blood platelets and bone marrow compromised. The
FIV+ is now full blown and active.

With active FIV and the need for major surgery on bones of inferior quality
and the knowledge that FIV will complicate if not prevent the healing of the
leg surgery, any leg surgery, and further more disallow healing of anything
he may catch Four has no future hope for a respectful and healthy quality of
life.

Four's gifts to us were making friendships through the bonds of pulling for
him, learning about beautiful Maine Coon Cats and ugly FIV+, enjoying
conversations with him, watching him grow comfortable while being loved and
cared for and thanking us in his own silly way. I even heard that your purrs
for him registered on the Richter Scale!

Our gift to him will be to let him rest now. He had a terrible life for
three years. And a good one for four months. You, all of you, are sending
him to the bridge wrapped in the most beautiful long, silky, brown and black
striped coat. When he came his coat was short, corse, stubbly, not very
attractive. With love, caring, vet care and medication that you paid for he
blossomed and his coat blossomed too and he is taking it with him!! Thank
you so much all of you. It is time.

Maybe there is hope for us when one small, stupid, fuzzy cat can mean so
much to so many.  Maybe...

I suspect we all wish we could see four off and let him know people cared
but I think you already made him aware of that.  You did great.

Charleen,
You gave Four four wonderful months that will outway the bad 3 years.  My
heart goes out to you because from reading your posts, I know how much you
cared for Four and how you tried to make this work.  A twist of fate and
everything changes.  My thoughts and prayers are with you. Here's to Four as
he makes his final journey.

I'm so sorry you have to deal with all this, Charleen. After all your
work with Four, and then your own illness, you must be heartbroken. We
are sending lots and lots of purrs. I've lit a candle for Four. He is
not suffering any more.

Charleen - you've made the right difficult decision.  I had a darling
kitten, Little, who had FIV which was kept somewhat in control with much
daily prednisone - but, like Four, when it became full-blown, it was time to
let go so Little didn't suffer.  You've done wonders with Four and are to be
commended for letting him go peacefully.

His good four months and you love will be the memory that he takes to
the Bridge. If everyone cared for other living things the way that you
care for Four we would all be in paradise.

I am so sorry Charleen
I wish had words of comfort that would help

IF TEARS COULD BUILD A STAIRWAY

If tears could build a stairway.
   and memories a lane.
I would walk right up to Heaven
   and bring you back again.

No farewell words were spoken
   No time to say "Goodbye."
You were gone before I knew it.
   and only Gods knows why.

My heart still aches with sadness.
   and secret tears still flow.
What it meant to love you-
       No one can ever know.

But now I know you want me
to mourn for you no more:
To remember all the happy times.
life still has much in store

   Since you'll never be forgotten.
       I pledge to you today-
A hollowed place within my heart.
is where you will always stay.

Charleen, I am so very sorry to hear about Four.  I hadn't said anything
before, but I was really rooting for him!

Capt. Midnight (RB) is on the Welcoming Committee at the Rainbow Bridge, and
you can be sure that when Four gets there, he will be shown around as only a
Maine Coon could be.

Ohhh, Charleen, I am SO sorry to hear about Four.  :(
I've heard so much about him and I am sitting here weeping, for your loss.
You gave Four a wonderful life, and did the kindest, but hardest, thing for
him.  I feel so bad for your broken heart sweetie.  My Mutt, met Four at the
Bridge, and they are happily playing, and I KNOW that Four loves you still
for being his loving hoomin.

Will you 'please' e-mail me your mailing address and I will write you a Mutt
(RB) sympathy card, from me and our 4 Cats.  And you are going thru such a
hard time yourself.  I wish there was something I could say, to ease your
pain sweetie.
I can put in some shiny confetti for you to sprinkle on Four's resting
place.
Love, PURRS, prayers and Bright Blessings

I've been sitting here all day not wanting to come online because I
didn't want to have this confirmed- I even went out and got myself a
new monitor and have spent an age effing and blinding at the thing
while setting it up and all the time hoping when I did finally get set
up there would be a post annoucing a miracle for Four but there isn't
so now I can't even see my new monitor properly due to MMS

Hugh (One of Four's East London fan club) called me earlier and even
through he has worries about Bandit (I'll do a seperate post about her
needing purrs) when I told him he was choked. And I for a second
forgot I was drinking a beer with Jim the Gardener also a Four fan he
just said "I need to go outside" and came back wiping his eyes

We're all sending our love, prayers and prayers for you and Four

Oh, Charleen - I've been so sad about this. After all you've been
through to help him, heal him, and build a bond with him. You must be
completely heartbroken. I know I am.

Purrs for Four, for you and your household, and for all of us at RPCA
who've been watching the story unfold, only to see it end this way. I
know it was the kindest thing you could have done, given the circumstances.
I just wish the circumstances had been different. But I'm glad he had a
chance to experience a loving home and good care before his luck turned.

I'll always remember Four, "the little cat who could..."

Charleen,

lucky to have found you and that you could make the last  months of his life
wonderful.  He deserved no less.

please just know that you made his last months on this earth good and kind

Charleen, I'm so very sorry about Four. You cared for him brilliantly
and I really mean that. It is wonderful that Four did get the chance
to relax properly and  to experience comfort, safety and of course
love. He will also pass away calmly and peacefully, without any drawn
out suffering. I hope your experience with Four does not deter you
from helping other kitties in need who will eventually cross your
path. I also hope that you are feeling better, as you have been unwell
yourself.

Charleen, you have been so brave and wonderful to help the cat that
needed you so badly.

He knew love and warmth and tenderness before it was time for him to
leave this earth.

The following is a poem that a vet sent to us when we lost a cat years
ago. I hope it helps.

We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary
than our own live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully
understanding the necessary plan...              Irving Townsend

Take care of yourself Charleen,

Its a tough decision to make, you *know* its the right thing to do, but you
argue iwth yourself none the less. Bless you for doing all you could for
Four, but most of all, bless you for caring. Thats what he *really* needed
above all else, and you gave more love in his last four months than he had
had for the rest of his life. He had turned 'Four' and could go to the
Bridge knowing that he was deeply and truly loved.
