Sam adored my new(ish) computer. Not only are its heat vents in exactly
the right spot, it's small enough that there was plenty of room for a
cat to curl up right next to them. I was worried a bit about what this
was doing to the innards of the computer, as I didn't think the makers
intended their vents to be insulated by a large cat, but when he started
kicking loose the keyboard connection I had to take action. I moved the
computer under a battered little stand from a long gone computer desk
that holds the monitor at just the right height. I didn't think this
through - sure, Sam can no longer reach the heat vents and the heat can
dissipate through the little space at the back of the monitor stand. But
he can also no longer fit *under* the monitor stand, where he used to
like curling up, chewing and scratching whatever papers were lurking
there. He's tried repeatedly, but he can't get any more than his head in
the space left between the top of the computer and the monitor stand!
He's also tried one of his fallback positions - he tries to climb up on,
well, my chest and curl up there. But he doesn't quite fit, and for some
reason he can't seem to quite understand, I find peering over a large
cat while trying to stop him from sliding down my chest by supporting
him with my hands to be not quite the most comfortable position for
using the computer.
He's reluctantly settled in a meatloaf position on the desk in the
former position of the computer, as close as he can get. He doesn't seem
to like the drawer with cushion that Mandy (RB) used for years. The back
of the computer is inaccessible. The space under the monitor stand is
clogged with non-cat stuff like the computer. And I'm not cooperating in
holding him to my chest while I type. Poor cat!

LOL. I know how you feel. Caliban still hasn't quite grasped that he
isn't a small kitten who can comfortably sleep on Meowmie's arm while
she types. He, too, tries to curl up on my chest, but though the 'shelf'
is not the smallest one around, it just doesn't work with a full-grown
boycat. I also committed the terrible sin of getting rid of my nice big
desk and now have just a small one that will just hold my laptop, the
cable modem, and a lamp. No space for a kitty to sprawl comfortably
beside the computer. I'm thinking of bringing back the big desk from my
cellar space.

I still have the big desk I bought in 1995, to use as a computer desk.
I'm really glad I have it, because I keep lots of things on it, yet still
have plenty of elbow room. I've never quite gotten why those tiny computer
desks are so popular. OK, I do get it - they take up less space in a room.
But I'd rather have the sprawly desktop space, and less floor space.
I used to have two computers on my desk (a PC and a Mac, sharing one monitor),
not to mention external modem, small bookshelf, desk lamp, and all sorts
of other flotsam and jetsam. And still plenty of room for me to sprawl out
comfortably *and* have my breakfast there on the weekends while reading
email.
And, of course, plenty of space for a kitty to lie between me and the
keyboard, to curl up and purr at me while I type. All three of them take
their turn at this.

With Sam, I don't know if he doesn't realize he's not a babycat any
more, or that he can't tell the difference between vertical and
horizontal - after all, he can rest comfortably on my chest when I'm
lying down and get skritches, but when I'm sitting up and he does
exactly the same thing, suddenly there's trouble!
And of course, when a cat feels himself sliding slowly but inevitably
from a perch, he does what comes naturally, and digs in his claws to
slow himself down! So I end up trying to support him with one or both
hands (he's a big fellow!) and type....
I have a decent-sized desk (plus, actually, two smaller ones and a large
table where Sam goes to steal and chew on jigsaw puzzle pieces), so it's
not as though he's short of a place to rest! He just adored that
computer heat vent though, and curled up right around it. Perching on
the small desk a couple feet above the baseboard heater, or lying on the
floor next to said heater doesn't seem quite as appealing.
