I know the lawyer who defended this guy (I petsit his cats and he's a
friend) and obviously without him saying too much to me (lawyer
confidentiality) he did manage to tell me it was one of his more weird
defence cases!

Why did they bug the guy's car to begin with? Was he a suspect?

I guess he didn't really confess to them... or at least, nobody could
prove he did.
