I once tried to grow catnip directly in the ground. I ended up with a slightly saucer-shaped empty spot in the garden where the plant had grown. It was larger than the original plant - I think all the local felines, on discovering the delicacy, had enjoyed it with such enthusiasm that they'd destroyed some neigbouring plants as well. That way the leaves grow through it and the cats can't flatten it or pull it out. Works well every year. This has a really healthy root system, so I've got to find or build it a new cage.
