Winnie went to the Bridge

Will in New Haven - 16 Mar 2008 23:12 GMT
He seemed fine yesterday but I found him collapsed in one of the
sleeping-spots on the stairs this morning. He was clearly not just
sleeping. We rushed him to the animal hospital and the vet said that
he probably had a heart attack during the night. He wasn't in pain but
he was, as she said, never going to wake up. There was no use hurrying
things, as he was in no pain. He went amidst family and friends.

He lives his whole life with Maggy May, his cat mother, Micki, his
human meowmie, his sister Missy and his "girlfriend" Sunrise. Seven
years ago, when he was three, he acquired a puppy named Bear, who will
miss him a great deal. A few years ago, I moved into his household and
Winnie welcomed me and befriended my cat Feather (RB) When my mom (RB)
left me her cat WooToo, Winnie welcomed her to the household.

He was always the one who told me that the bowl of crunchy food needed
filling. He had an endearing habit of snagging your wrist when he
wanted petting.

Oh, and he was a gorgeous, neat little white Persian. And that matters
the least.

I've been crying. I dug for him out back. I would have liked to have
taken him back to West Haven and put him beside Feather but that would
have made a problem with the current owners of the house.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Will, I'm glad Winnie didn't suffer. I've lit a

Thank you. I had my secretary type this in English, because you guys

I'm sorry, Will. But Winnie had a good loving home and hoomins, and
that makes him a fortunate cat. And I'm sure a cat who will be sorely
missed.

Have a gentle trip over the bridge, Winnie.

Sorry is such an empty word when you are feeling such sorrow.  To be loved
and loving are about all a person or cat can ask for in this life.  Winnie
was both and so were the rest of your household.

Thank you. I was in the middle of replying to all the messages on all

one day. In the persevering spirit of Winnie demanding breakfast for
the cats, I am resuming.

Dearest Will,
I'm SO sorry to hear about Winnie.  It sounds like just the way our beloved
Mutt went last Dec 9, just took a nap and woke up at RB.  Mutt was 19,
and in ill health, and he too was surrounded by family and friends.
Will you 'please' e-mail me your snail mail address so I can send you a
'sympathy' Cat card?  I'm so sorry for your loss, and how it's affecting you
and your family.

I so very sorry for your loss. I am glad that he didn't suffer; that is
something to be thankful for, at least.

I sounds like he lived a very full life, with lots of furry buddies, and
humans who loved him.

I have lit a candle in my very special candle holder in the shape of a
sleeping cat, for Winnie.

He lived his whole life with his mom and sister. Not only that but
Maggy May was very loving toward her "kids," even when they were
grown. And Missy seemed to love her brother, even though she hates
humans. And he got along well with the rest of us too. Mr.

So sorry for your loss of Winnie, who shares my name. I am glad he
didn't suffer.
Purrs for you and your family.

Thank you. I don't think I remember his being sick, except for an
occasional coughing fit. He had a very pleasant life and now he is on
an adventure we can't even imagine.

Thank you for the purrs and we purr back. Cool name.

He sounds a wonderful fellow. Purrs for his friends left behind, be
they feline, canine or human.

I am so sorry, Will. Seems like so many 'kids' are going to the Bridge
again this year.

I found this poem on another list, and it seemed appropriate to post.

NOTE FROM THE BRIDGE

To my dearest family,
some things I'd like to say.
But first of all, to let you know,
that I arrived okay.

I'm writing this from the Bridge.
Here I dwell with God above.
Here there's no more tears of sadness.
Here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy
just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I am with you
every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you
when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me
and He said, "I welcome you.

It's good to have you back again,
you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family,
They'll be here later on."

God gave me a list of things,
that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list,
was to watch and care for you.

And when you lie in bed at night
the day's chores put to flight,
God and I are closest to you...
in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth,
and all those loving years,
because you are only human,
they are bound to bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry,
it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers,
unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you
all that God has planned.
If I were to tell you,
you wouldn't understand.

But one thing is for certain,
though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now,
than I ever was before.

There are rocky roads ahead of you
and many hills to climb;
But together we can do it
by taking one day at a time.

It was always my philosophy
and I'd like it for you too;
That as you give unto the world,
the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody
who's in sorrow and pain;
Then you can say to God at night...
"My day was not in vain."

And now I am contented...
that my life was worthwhile.
Knowing as I passed along
I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody
who is sad and feeling low;
Just lend a hand to pick him up,
as on your way you go.

When you're walking down the street
with me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps
only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go...
from that body to be free.
Remember you're not going...
you're coming here to me.

It is easy to miss a thread. I know that you understand how it feels.
Every morning that our spokescat is not on the counter, chest puffed
out, demanding breakfast for his people, is a reminder. But he is a
joyful spirit and I try to remember him with joy.
