Chessie & Sticky Tape

Lorna - 16 Mar 2008 16:47 GMT Just wanted folks to know if I let Chessie play with a bit of tape (which she dearly loves), I am right there and take it away after she has batted it around a bit. As far as I am concerned, my kitties are like toddlers and have to be watched like hawks so they don't eat inedibles. My biggest fear in that respect are those nylon things that hold new socks together or hold tags onto new clothing. I'm buying cordless blinds for the new sunroom - it's amazing what the little darlings think of as "toys for the kitty" (everything in the house!). And am careful to keep control of anything which could be batted off a table - as I said, it's like having small children around and a real responsibility. And worth every bit of it! Often when I go to bed, I put a hand on each purring furry little body on either side of me and I think "This is pure bliss" - and sometimes we all three sing together <g> Lorna (Chessie & Nikki)

Hands up all on the group who would do this. I am not expecting many replies. I would not dream of doing this to KFC or Boyfriend. I would be ashamed if I ever even thought about it. They are both precious (sp?) to me and I try to make their lives happy and safe which does not include putting sticky tape on their paws for a laugh.

Whatever it may be, if it doesn't amuse BOTH of us, I don't do it. Lorna

Well, I certainly wouldn't play games with my cats that scared them or made them uncomfortable, although I do admit that I sometimes laugh at them when they do something silly, even though that might annoy them (at least I try to hide it when I'm laughing, but they always seem to know).
I never feel ashamed of my thoughts, though. Thoughts don't hurt other people or animals. What counts is how we act. I have a lot of thoughts that never see the light of day, but if I felt bad about them, I'd be pretty miserable!

Not hardly. I don't figure my cats were put here for my amusement, but if they were they provide plenty without my causing them any discomfort. I'd also be very afraid that Jake would try to get even and that Molly would never forgive me.
The only thing of that sort that is allowed around here, and only on very rare occasion and because she really likes the stuff is putting a teaspoon of peanut butter on the roof of the dogs mouth.
I do have to admit that when my oldest daughter was little she dressed her cat Sam up in baby clothes and took him for walks in a doll carriage. But he adored her no matter what she did, and he raised her into a proper slave.

I'm still working on the cats. We are as careful as possible with tags, those things that hold price tags on, plastic bags (Qui Gun Kit got hold of one of those and scared the daylights out of me) and stray objects that find their way onto the floor around here. You're right, cats are like little kids and will get into everything.

Just the other day I was emptying my shopping out of a plastic bag, and I turned my back for a moment and he had his head stuck through the handle. He was starting to panic but I got the bag off him before he ran off. He's not used to plastic bags, so they are extra interesting. I don't use them normally, but this time my shopping didn't all fit into my backpack, and it was raining cats and d*gs, so I was afraid a paper bag wouldn't make it all the way home

It took a five minute chase all over the house before we finally caught him and cut the handle off of him. It seemed like hours.
Pam S. Glad that he didn't choke himself

It's not like you're putting tape *on* her, because you think it's funny. I would never do anything like that. Or put paper cups on their heads, or tease them in any way that made them anxious. (When people did the "fake throw" with their dogs, it used to irritate me, too!) You make a GOOD point about safety. I just can't see this warning enough. You've all heard how Frank nearly hung himself on a minicord blind. If I hadn't been there, he'd be dead. I just didn't know. Another safety issue at our house is, Bootsie tries her darndest to get at a pin and try to eat it. I have to be so careful with pins when sewing.

Mine would start off, then look back at me like, "Who are you kidding? And I almost fell for it, too!"

Sherry - 16 Mar 2008 21:06 GMT Oops. Hit "send" too soon....Does Licky fetch? A friend of mine had a cat who would fetch a foil ball. I never could get mine interested in that.

And sometimes he'll pick it up in his mouth (I prefer to use the foam balls so he can do this) and carry it around. And he'll do this "token" fetch thing, where he comes back in my direction about 2 steps, and drops it there, while staring at me, LOL. It's more of a symbolic act of returning it. :)
Now Everett, he would actually fetch whatever I threw and bring it all the way back to me. I miss him! In a bit, I'm going to head over to the pet food store where they have the mobile adoption, to visit him.

She actually brings them all the way back to me, because she loves her stringy toys and she knows Meowmie can make them dance and fly.

If you do it too often, and the kids are guilty of this, she will make you fetch the ball yourself.
She does the fake, 'I don't know where it went', to get even.
At the moment she is lying on my feet like a proper collie, not understanding that it is far to windy outside to go to the park. From inside it appears a lovely day.

That's how I feel about all my beasties, too. I'll have Smudge curled by my waist. Roxy is often on top of me, and Licky is further down near the end of the bed. Whole lotta purring goin on. The best sleep aid in the world.

Whole lotta purring goin on. The > best sleep aid in the world. I never seem to realize how terribly cold my feet are until I slide them under a sleeping cat. The cats don't complain and I get warm fuzzies on my feet. Merlin provides the warmest body, but then he sleeps in the biggest pile. He also budges the least. Huey is also a good feet warmer, but the rest of the cats would rather sleep on my head, against my legs, or against my back. Rob usually has a cat wrapped in his arms or against him somewhere. There were only two cats on the bed with us for most of the night last night. Spring is definitely here.

I posted to rec.pets.cats about this when it happened, but maybe it's worth a repost - when Ishmael was a kitten (1992) I once left about ten feet of duct tape unattended, flat on the floor, sticky side up, and didn't notice that he'd got in the room. Aargh. Instant Bast mummy. I had to get a neighbour to help snip him out of it and he had a ragged haircut for weeks.
I nearly lost another kitten due to loops of fringe on the upholstery of an armchair - I just spotted in time that she was hanging herself on it. I snipped all the hanging loops in the house immediately after.
