Feline Diabetes

I'm beginning to suspect that my elderly, formerly stray cat, Miss Puakea
Makana has feline diabetes.  (Yes, I'll get her into a Vet's office in the
next couple of days for a blood test to be sure.)

Anyway, Pua's 10 + years, getting thinner slowly, she drinks a HECK of a lot
of water, but otherwise she eats normally, plays normally and her "bathroom"
habits are fine.  Her eyes are clear, her nose is pink and her fur is nice
and thick.

I've done a Google research on seemingly healthy cats and the outcome, in my
opinion, is screaming diabetes.

Does anyone else have a diabetic cat?  Is it easy to live with?  Do you
change their food?

Again, I can't be sure if this is the problem until I make an appointment
with the Vet.  Meanwhile, she's getting wet food in the evening and she
nibbles on the dry during the day.  Thanks for any insight!

Yes Kili  My rumble is diabetic and insulin free for almost 2 years now.  In
the begining it was rough taking Rumble back and forth to have his curve
that the weekly testing done.

Under advice of some good friends here and the other groups.  I switched My
Rumble to Fancy feast diet it was the best one that had the most choices
with gravy which is all Rumble will touch.  He goes in for a curve here soon
to make sure his levels are ok.

I had to give rumble insulin shots  far awhile.  This is how we rescued
Ka'shay if Rumble would have not been sick I wuld have never heard the
pitful meow that called out to me saying I am not happy take me home

Thanks, Matthew I appreciate your comments very much.  We'll get Pua in ASAP
to have her tested and, I guess it's Fancy Feast time!

Read the ingredients side by side against other brands.  It's been a long
time since Persia could eat FF but IIRC some of the canned stuff at WalMart
(you have one of those, right?) was the same thing and about 15 cents
cheaper per can.

Of course, get the vet's diagnosis, first.  Persia isn't losing weight but
she drinks a LOT of water.  I notice it more since she got her Drinkwell
kitty fountain some years ago; shes slurps at the running water LOL

Good suggestion, Jill.  We had to re-up the kibble today and we *did* look
at ingredients on a couple of different brands in the hopes there may be
less grain in one vs. the one we've been using.  Publix brand is higher in
protein & taurine than Purina, so we're mixing the two.  So far, in the
short hour we've been home, the cats have been eating it up.  I suspect
we'll have to refill the bowl in a few hours.  We also got some small cans
of Publix "fancy" wet food, which they all seem to like and again, the
ingredients looked to be better than Friskies.  I couldn't justify the cost
of Fancy Feast compared to Publix brand right now.  Publix is only $.35 a
can and FF was about $.85.  One brand of wet that none of mine will eat is
9-Lives; it must be really bad to turn up the noses of 3 cats!  LOL.

Kili  you are right  about other brands.  I use FF because of the food
recall and when Spirit was alive being poisoned by Wal-Mart's brand of food.
Ifyou do use FF the best place to buy it is Sam's club or BJ's  but there
are other bands and what the vet says.  Just don't automatically believe the
science diet crap

kili has a problem in that her shopping choices are limited.  There's no
Sam's Club (which, in case you didn't know, is owned by WalMart) in her
area, at least not that I know of.  I can't recall the other brand I
compared to FF when Persia could still eat it; it wasn't a store brand but
it was virtually identical to FF and a lot cheaper.

We do have a WalMart, but a Sam's club is over an hour away and we don't
have a membership.  Until I get to a Vet by Monday or Tuesday, I'm going
with whatever store-brand food has the best nutritional value (from what I
can tell, anyway).  More protein, less grain.

I was worried about possible contamination in the food, too, because my
MIL's d*g passed away from the Mighty Dog packets that came from the place
in China.

Meanwhile, since we don't even know what the problem is, yet, a change in
diet can't hurt.

No problem Jill I did not want her to think that FF was the only way.  For
me it was due to Rumble being a spoiled fur nut.

Kili thre are other brands out there I chose Fancy feast because of it
variety with gravy.  None of the others had over 12 choices that had gravy.
Rumble will not eat anything with out gravy.   There is a list on that site
I posted eralier that has all the brands on it.

I don't think Pua has a preference for gravy, but I'm not sure.  She's
(so-far) liking the Winn-Dixie brand of cat food and the Publix brand.
We'll see how it goes.  :~)

I would worry about a kidney problem.  Do get her to a vet.

She doesn't seem to have a problem with using the litterboxes, though.  (She
was just busy scratching at the lid of the box.  She's never quite learned
the whole litter procedure.  Cover your mess, stinky girl!)  And, trust me,
I'm sitting RIGHT next to both boxes and can tell!  When all three furballs
are done with their morning "constitutional", those boxes are getting
cleaned out.  Yikes.  At least I clean the boxes daily which is more than I
can say for my husband's participation with the pet rats' cage!

I digress......

Don't most cats with kidney problems miss the box or pee in odd places?
What are any other signs of kidney failure?

Thanks!

Lots and lots of purrs for Miss Puakea Makana and gentle hugs for you, kili,

Have the vet check the thyroid levels.  Sounds like hyperthyroidism to
me.  Treatable, but get it diagnosed fast.

Thanks, Sharon.  It could be something that simple.  If my husband doesn't
work on Monday (heck, he hasn't worked in a month, why would Monday be any
different!) he'll be able to take us in since I don't have a car.  My main
concern is her recent loss of weight.  Again, she's playing fine, she's
eating, she's affectionate - all good signs, but she's been getting a bit
thin this past month and she's drinking a tad too much water for my liking.
Hey, she can have as much water as she wants but 3 glassfulls a day with
sips at the joint waterbowl seems excessive.  We've had Pua now for about 3
years and she's only ever drank a full glass of water a day - now it's up to
3.  Something isn't right, you know?  In any case, it's only been in the
past month or so, so whatever it is I've caught it early.

Thanks for your suggestions!

The weight loss can definitely be a sign of hyperthyroidism. That's what
alerted the vet to Frank's hyperT. I don't remember if he drank more
than usual, but with diabetes, Pua would also pee much more than usual.

I don't have experience with diabetes in cats, but have suffered from
type I for 38 years myself now, so if you need info in general, just ask. :)

Purrs on their way for Ms Pua.

I'd have her kidney function tested, too.

Thanks, Joyce.  You're the second to suggest kidneys, so that may be an

Kili, I hope Karen C. sees this and chimes in. She's dealt with
Pearl's diabetes for years,
and IIRC, she belongs to a specific group for owners of diabetic cats,
where they exchange
information about the disease. Wish I could help you--I have no
experience with
diabetes. (But I'm noticing Yoda with his head stuck in the water bowl
an awful
lot lately, and have, just like you, begun to wonder, given his age.

I was hoping Karen would post, too. I think it's a yahoo group on
diabetic cats. Where is Karen, anyway?

address.
I'll drop her a line and give her a heads-up about Kili's question.

I haven't seen any messages from Karen lately in the groups we have in
common.  She has a blog for Pearl here:

It has good links to several diabetic groups.
