Town Puts $5 Bounty On Feral Cats

Captured Animals To Be Euthanized

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The tiny southwest Iowa town of Randolph is fed up with
wild cats and is offering a $5 bounty for each one
If the cats aren't claimed, they will be euthanized.

Mayor Vance Trively said Randolph has dozens of feral cats -- and the
population keeps growing.

The City Council approved the bounty, which went into effect March 1.

The mayor said several suggestions have been made, including neutering. But
Trively says they'd just end up in the same boat.

John Snyder is with the Humane Society of the United States. He doesn't have
a problem with humanely euthanizing the cats, but he's concerned about who's
catching the cats.

He said a feral cat is a formidable opponent and there's the potential for
rabies.

Snyder says the money would be better used to hire someone who knows what
they're doing

This has to be about the most asinine plan I've every heard of.

Just how long do they think it will be before people start stealing cats
from neighboring towns to collect the bounty?

And then it will really hit the fan.

Stealing cats for $5.00?

Someone cross-posted here and to a group I follow, which led me here.
I'm stunned by the freakish glop posted here, and also surprised to
find that all of the "cat lover" stereotypes are actually true, in
here at least. It got to be like a car accident, you don't want to
see, but you somehow have to look.

Assinine!  How can neutered & spayed cats cause the same problem as ferals
that breed indescriminately?

And this quote:  "John Snyder is with the Humane Society of the United
States. He doesn't have a problem with humanely euthanizing the cats, but
he's concerned about who's catching the cats."  Excuse me?  He doesn't have
a problem with this?!  What's "humane" about euthenizing cats, feral or not,
if they aren't severely injured or very ill?  Everyone in this group knows
(many) ferals can be tamed and make good pets.

I have a problem with the HSUS anyway.  Just got a bunch of return address
labels in the mail from them with my "new" address printed on them.  Of
course this is a bid for donations.  I have several problems with this.  #1,
why not take the money they're wasting on cutesy address labels and
bulk-mail costs and use it for the animals instead?  #2  I've never given
them any money, but I've gotten tons of address labels from them.  #3, I
don't live here!  LOL

they're feral.  Jeez!!!!!!!!!!

May we euthanaize irresponsible pet owners?  I'm all for that!

You guys make your own trouble. A couple of comments and questions and
all this "loving cat owner" bs goes right out the window. When you cat
freaks get like this, my friends and I refer to it as a "hairball
hootenanny."  A couple of my college professor friends get a real
"hoot" out of the whole thing.

Here's one for you: The Native Americans never awarded their braves
with cat fur.

How in the world do you figure that?  I love my 3 cats and they love me
back.  Mine are indoor only, they get their shots and their flea medication,
they get wet and dry food, they have 2 litterboxes and a boatload of toys.

We also feed strays in the neighborhood because I hate to see a skinny cat.
I guess I just like most things "fluffy" - including my husband.  LOL.

Your beloved strays are stalking bird feeders, spraying  and hiding in
your neighbors' bushes. Your pet cats are making people physically
ill, even those who love them.

Thank god.  Filthy creatures, birds.  Crap all over everything, spread
disease, kill people,  mess up car windows.  They should all be killed;
it would save human lives.  I have bird traps set up all over my multiple
properties.  Hey listen, if you want them just post me your address and I
will send you as many as you want.  I wont even kill them.

Don't worry.  The number of people who do not die from the killer bird
poop will more than make up for those that die from the sprayed bushes.

Calling this one a troll is an unwarranted compliment.  It looks like I

Troll hunting can be fun  used to do it all the time in alt.cats if you
remember  but the pathetic ones are not worth it

Hi Dan,
I agree with this.  Especially if it were TNR of the people
responsible for this problem.

Having said that, I do agree that trapping feral and other homeless
cats is not for just anybody and puts the trappers, as well as the
cats, at risk of injury.  I find this whole program as presented to be
terribly sad and upsetting as well as foolish.

Agreed.

Since the town that's doing this is just an hour or so away from me, I'm
going to see if I can't find an animal rescue group who might be willing
to sponsor a TNR program.

It is unfortunate, but I think you will find that the residents of
that town are protected by state law.
