Four went to the vet this morning for a regularly scheduled appointment. He
saw Dr. Hernadez and "his" tech, Tracy. After the set back of four weeks ago
where the wound opened wider and started weeping Four took his course of
meds and the wound stopped the negative actions. The wound dried up and
remained open and at the size it was at the time of the visit until about
five days ago when it started closing again.

A number of things happened today.  For the first time I picked Four up. He
is a heavy guy. Not fat by any means but solid, I so glad to report. He was
really good about it, not a negative action at all on his part, matter of
fact he went limp, like the pictures of the rag doll cats I see.

Tracy was able to get enough fecal matter to run the test and it came back
negative. Glad that is out of the way.

.Dr. Hernandez has precribed Baytril pills and Neo-Predef Powder for the
neck wound.  She and Tracy have great hopes that on this course of meds the
wound will close.

They feel he is okay enough now to treat his very badly infected ears, one
has has the tube closed.  I have Otibiotic (Malotic) drops for that.  It is
evident to them that his ears have been infected for a very long time and it
will take a while to restore them to good health.

He recently has developed an allergy to something  as yet unidentified.  He
scratches the itches on his sides causing sores.  He has been prescribed
Prednisolone for the treatment of that.

As I was out until late in the day I wasn't able to visit him until this
afternoon. He was only interested in wheter or not I had food for him.  He
sulked a while then came over for some petting.  While at the vets he was
purring.  I've not yet heard him purr here at home.

All in all I would say that things look more promising for him medically
than  since he arrived here.  He appears to be content where he is. The door
is open to the house for him during certain hours of the day, he will come
in and explore and then return to the porch by his own choice.

The litterbox situation is still iffy.  Better, much better than it was but
not great.  We are still holding out hope!

He is a great cat.  I'm anxious for him to be all better and to move into
the house.

That's great news!

What were they testing for?

I sure hope so. You'll have to throw a party when that wound finally
closes for good. :)

Poor guy. :(  Does Dr. Hernandez think that his hearing will improve once
that infection is cleared up?

That seems odd to me. Giving him a steroid while he's trying to fight
infection? Won't that slow down the progress?

For some reason I thought I remembered you posting that he'd purred at
home once, but maybe I'm confusing him with another cat. I wonder if he
purred at the vet's to comfort himself?

They're all troopers - and you're a hero! :)

Continuing purrs for Four.

Sending Four purrs that he will return to very good health.   MLB

Excellent news, Charleen!  Sounds like things are progressing well!  We
will continue, of course, keeping Four and y'all in our thoughts and
purrayers..

Poor Four, with all the meds he needs. We're purring that they will work
and he will be completely healthy soon.

Charleen,

I'm so happy Four is adjusting to you and his new life. He sounds like a
happy cat. That's wonderful that he is putting on weight and feeling better.

But you know me -- I have to speak out every now and then, ha. I am
concerned about giving Four steroids. That is how our cat became
diabetic. I believe Karen on this group's cat also contracted diabetes
after steroids. Did the vet give you any alternative way to treat the
allergies without the dangers of steroids? Does he have an idea what's
causing them and how to treat the cause? We found out our inside cat had
fleas and that's why he was scratching uncontrollably. If you haven't
already, try taking a flea comb through his hair and look for flea dirt.
If you find it, I'd stop the steroids for sure and treat the fleas. I'm
told flea allergies are the number one cause of allergies around the
back and tail in cats. Food allergies normally cause swelling or hair
lose on the face.

By the way, prednisone will make him very hungry.

The other thing, I still worry about how the vet is not tackling some
other medical problems very aggressively. If the ears are badly
infected, I think those should have been treated immediately. I know
there was some trust issues with Four, but I can't imagine him not
treating them this long. If the infection gets into the middle ear,
usually the only way to get rid of it is by surgery. That's why treating
outer ear infections is crucial.

Have you considered a second vet opinion for an overall look at Four?

Okay, that's me worrying for now. I am really glad he is in good spirits
and adjusting to your home. It sounds like you two were made for each other.

Take care,

Rhonda

Such good news! I know he isn't in perfect health, or near perfect
health yet, but Four has come such a long way. Thanks for the update.
