Yoj - 23 Nov 2004 18:48 GMT All the time I've had Nanki-Poo sequestered, I've had a bowl with a combination of Friskies and Science Diet dry food in it, and a bowl of water in his room. In the meantime I've tried tempting him with various canned foods and baby food.
The dry food dish has been untouched - until this morning! He must have eaten 3/4 of it! I had been thinking I might have to give him another infusion today, even though I gave him one yesterday. He had used the litter box so much last night that it seemed the fluid must have gone straight to the kidneys and out. If he's eating, he's probably drinking too, so I'll hold off. Maybe he won't need any more infusions.
Anyway, I'm sure he's going to recover now.

Yes, I put some more food in the dish, and he attacked it immediately. I don't know if he's eaten anything since, but once he's started, I'm sure he'll continue, so I'm not too concerned.

Not the crud in the supermarket, but the kind you get in Indian restaurants to go with curry. It's called "dahi" and should be nice and smooth with only a hint of tang, not sour like the store stuff. You can get an order cheap at your nearest curry house. Our cats love it for a treat and will steal it at every possible opportunity. It doesn't give cats the runs like milk. The processing actually breaks down the lactose that causes such trouble for kitties. Our vet approved it for our kids. Their litterbox offerings are better after a bit of yogurt too: firmer, larger, yet easy to pass, and not as, um, aromatic.
I'm making myself hungry. I think I'll get some curry!
Blessed be, Baha

We have quite a few ethnic restaurants here in town, but no Indian ones.

Some grocery stores sell milk that has been cultured with a bacteria called Lactobacillus Acidophilus. This is the same species that is used to make yogurt, but the strain used in the milk doesn't produce a sour flavor. Since most people with ancestry from outside northern Europe lose the ability to digest lactose once they reach age two or so (as do some people with northern European ancestry), there is a ready market for the product.

Probably because of the live cultures in the yogurt - they replenish the needed digestive fauna in the intestines. I'll have to try this. There are certainly plenty of Indian restaurants around here, too. Or maybe a south Asian grocery store would have it?

badwilson - 25 Nov 2004 03:49 GMT > > This is a real jump, but consider getting him some plain yogurt. > > Our cats love it for a treat and will steal it at [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] > > Joyce I make my own yoghurt, it's so easy. I just take a liter of milk and add about 6 or 7 tablespoons of powdered milk. Bring to a boil for only a short time and then cool it down to about 45 degrees Celsius. Add 1/2 cup plain yoghurt (the kind with live culture, can get at any supermarket) and keep it around 45C for 5 hours or until it gels (yoghurtifies). I use my rice cooker on warm to do this but you could do it in the oven with the door open slightly or any other method you can think of. Then I drain off the whey, add whatever flavours I want (fruit) and blend with a hand blender. Then I put it in a container in the fridge and the next morning it's ready. I put it over my cereal and it's yummy and healthy and I know exactly what's in it. -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur! If you have access to a dehydrator, or your oven can reliably stay at a low temperature, you can make some delicious low-sugar candy by flavoring and drying yogurt. It comes out something like a taffy, but not as sticky unless the additives are sticky.

Unfortunately I don't have a dehydrator and my oven has never worked in the 3 years that I've lived in this house. My landlord has said I can get it fixed but I've yet to find anyone who knows how. Most of the people I've talked to don't even know what an oven is. I live in a pretty small town in Thailand. If it wasn't always so humid out I guess I could dehydrate stuff in the sun, but I think it's much too humid for that. -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I realize that it's probably prohibitively expensive to get one to you, but, if anyone ever wants to ship a gift or you can pick one up on travel, it's worthwhile. If you are reasonably handy, it's also possible to build them from wood, a light bulb or two as heating elements, and a small fan == a thermostat is very nice, and if you have to order one item, they are small.
It's one of the most useful appliances I've ever bought. These days, I regard it not just as a means of preserving, but as a distinct cooking technique, or at least of making cooking ingredients. Gentle dehydration can really concentrate the flavor of many fruits and vegetables. I'm thinking more of Western plants, but banana, jackfruit, etc., probably would work. I don't want to speculate about durian. Oven-dried tomatoes, either plain or herbed, are better than anything I've ever bought in a store.
You can puree various vegetables, dry them, crumble them into powder, and use them as sauce bases. Milk and celery powder makes something similar to a white sauce based on chicken stock -- it's one sauce I find useful to make brussels sprouts taste good to people who hate them (parboil them very quickly first). Dried broccoli is a nice crunchy snack, but I've only really gotten decent cream of broccoli soup using the home-made powder.
There are other uses. At least in temperate climates, it's very useful for keeping things just slightly above room temperature, such as bread dough rising or yogurt fermenting. When you use it this way, wrap the food tightly so it doesn't dry in an undesired way.
