Question About Cat Behavior...

I know that cats hunch their backs, bristle their fur and spit when
they are threatened by other animals, but my kitten likes to hunch his
back when I'm petting him.  Why does he do this, if this is behavior
normally associated with fear?  TIA

In this instance it's not a sign of fear as much as a "here, here, pet here"
sign of body language.

Exactly.  The kitty is saying "Oooh, don't forget this spot" :)  It would be
different, of course, if it were accompanied by a bristled tail and hissing.

I've got two of them, and sometimes it's hard not to think that they
are really trying to do each other in.

Their about 6 months old now.

At about 6 months old, it is normal to act like they're attempting
felinicide.  They're about the equivalent of 12-14 year olds.  Have you ever
watched the kids (especially boys) at a middle school?  They push each
other, roll around, play fight, giggle, act like maniacs, and get the
zoomies.  Sound familiar?  Your owners are being perfectly normal.  Sit back
and enjoy the floor show.

Also, many cats (but not all) will arch their backs when your petting
reaches the the area of the back next to the base of the tail.  It seems
to be a reflex action (like twitching their ears when you touch them)
but not all my cats have had the reflex.

I had a cat that hunched its back when it was sharpening its claws on
my couch.  I guess it's just a matter of what feels good to the
indiividual.

This is what I thought.  It's really cute.

I wouldn't know how cats behave, as I've never seen them behave.  If you can
figure it out, please let us know.

That needed a BW!

It's like when the Fabulous Furballs were kittens- my friend Tel was
round and Sarsi was climbing the curtains and he laughed and I said
"Don't encourage her- she isn't supposed to do that"

He said "Sorry it's just I've never owned a cat"

I said "And neither have we"

I'm reminded of the time at work when I mentioned that Frank used to
wake me up too early in the morning. A co-worker who has never lived
with a cat (and doesn't like cats) said, 'but can't you just *tell* him
to be quiet?' I said, 'sure, I can tell him until I'm blue in the face.
Won't make any difference.'
