Cat Hugging?

I can pick up Pookie and hug him hard and he squeaks, so does Sqweex, when
I hug her hard, and Pipps gives me these LOL squawks.  I don't hug Mosey
hard because he might throw up and he's still too skinny.
But the others love being hugged and squeaked.
Do you hug your cats and make them squeak?
I tell em I love em is why I do dat.

Can't. They would never put up with it! They all like their version
of cuddling, but I can't do just any old thing I want with them. I
sort of envy people who have "malleable" cats - cats you can put into
any position, and they stay there and purr. Everett seems a bit like
that - if he's in the mood for cuddling, I can move him around and
position him so that it's comfy for me, and he just continues cuddling
and purring. I'm going to miss the little devil!!!

I don't think so.

I don't think the little devil has any intention of going anywhere.

Evidence - he has already identified a cat need in your home the others
don't fulfill and is working on satisfying that need.

You are right about the need. In fact, I would say it's more than a
cat need (ie, a need for a type of relationship with a cat). I live
alone and don't have a partner, and I feel extremely touch and affection-
deprived. Cats fulfill that need more than any human does at this point.
And I've noticed that since I've had Everett, I've felt much less longing
for hugs and cuddles from people. He really is wonderful that way.

But the truth is, I cannot keep him. That makes me sad, but it's the
truth. He might not intend to go anywhere (and I do think he'd be
perfectly happy to stay), but I can't manage with 4 cats. I really
can't. I wish I could. Wish I could work part-time, or could afford
to hire a regular housekeeper to come every week. Or that my company
would let me work at home even *one* day a week. Any of those things
would make it easier for me to deal with all the work it takes to
care for 4 cats - the complicated feedings, shutting this one and
that one in different rooms, the endless cleaning of cat litter, both
in the box and all over the floor. I could just barely manage this
before Everett, but with a rambunctious, typically destructive kitten,
it's almost impossible.

And then there's the money commitment. I take this very seriously.
I'm not so sure I can afford to commit to paying for the health needs
of 4 cats. Roxy's health care costs a lot because she has herpes.
Smudge has a cat fight about once every 4-6 months, and that can
get expensive. Now Licky has health problems. And Everett has a leaky
eye and might also have herpes (he hasn't been tested).

We talk on this NG about people who, while well-meaning, end up having
more pets than they can care for, and everyone's health and well-being
suffers for it. I've heard people say many times on this NG that if you
can't afford to take care of an animal, you shouldn't adopt one. I'm
trying to be responsible here and make the right choice. I don't think
I can afford to commit to paying for another cat's possibly high vet
bills. I don't think I should make a commitment that I'm not sure I can
keep. Fostering's different because it's temporary, I can back out if
I need to, and I don't have to pay the vet bills. If Licky hadn't
gotten sick, I would have continued to foster Everett until he got
adopted. <sigh...>

And then there's the fact that I live in rental housing, owned by
someone who thinks I have two cats. He doesn't know about Licky, much
less Everett. And what if I have to move at some point? There's a lot
of pet-owner discrimination in housing around here, and I think it'd
be pretty hard to find a new place with 4 cats in tow.

If I had more money and could hire household help, if I owned my own
home with more space - then I'd have more cats. I love having lots of
cats. But I don't want to get in over my head. That wouldn't be good
for anyone - not for me, not for Everett, and not for my other sweeties,
either.

Thanks for listening.

I'd love to have more cats, too, but I have to stay realistic. The
biggest problem would be transporting more than two cats to the island.
It's hard enough going on the bus with two. I can sometimes hitch a ride
with my brother or sister, but I can't count on that being possible
every summer. So I just have to admire all the beautiful cats in the
world from afar, and enjoy the two in my home.

Stinky has always loved hugs, and comes and since he was a little guy, has
come to me and asked to be picked up.  Dante likes them too, but he is
heavy, wiggly and slippery.  He purrs like crazy, but he is too busy to hang
around for long.  He sees something moving around somewhere, and he's out of
there.  Stinky has always been a mushcat.

Give Dante a few more years. He's young yet.

Stinky was a mushcat from day one, even while he was a highly energetic
troublemaker. ;)  In fact, I think that's what kept me from being driven
absolutely to drink by some of his shenanigans.  He would lay waste to the
entire house, then crawl up into my lap and melt me down with purrs. ;)

Dante is a bit different.  He is busy and playful and into things, and while
he's not as intrusive (and destructive!) as Stinky was, he's just a busy
guy.  Stinky would tear the house down, then ooze into a little puddle of
purrs.  But even when Dante's in my lap, he's always moving around, kneading
and pawing and shiatsu-ing my legs.

But Mimi became more tolerant of being held as she got older. :)

Buster's the first non-limp cat I've had.  He's only limp when he's
relaxing on my lap.  Betty's the most boneless cat I've had.  Dot
comes pretty close.  None of them normally give a protest squeak when
being picked up, although Dot squeaks to greet me, and Betty would
sometimes squeak when I picked her up while she was showing her
belly.  All of them beg to be held by getting up on their hind legs
and playing patty-paws with your thighs.

I pick up Kenzie and hug her, but she just purrs. She likes to be draped
over my shoulder, like you would burp a baby, too.

Caliban likes that, too. He often falls asleep like that, draped over my
shoulder.

Persia doesn't like to be picked up.  She'll tolerate it for a minute, even
with a hug.  But just grabbing her and hugging her on any sort of frequent
basis is pretty much out of the question.  She does *snuggle* close to me on
the couch or in bed quite a bit, and that's enough for me :)

I don't hug mine that hard, because I'm afraid of hurting them.  I do hug
Nanki-Poo, and he purrs while I'm doing it.  Lindy just struggles to get
away, so I don't try very often.

Picking them UP is the hard part. They're both good squirmers and
leapers. But once I've got them in my arms, they'll put up with a bit
of cuddling. Nina is a hug-and-squeaker. Francesca just gives me this
cold look that says  "The minute you let go of me, I am SO out of
here!" She's not an unaffectionate cat, though. She's willing to sit
in my lap for sessions of heavy petting as long as I let HER pick the
moment.  But any attempt to hold her against her will is good for half
a day of the cold kitty shoulder. Nina though--she's just a little
love sponge.

Perhaps the "squeek" indicates that you are hurting him.  Don't break his
ribs or hug so hard you injure his soft body.
Granby - 02 Mar 2008 13:09 GMT
Mz Piglet will let me hold her, when she wants, Her best effort towards a
human is being by me on the bed at night.  She is close and purrs a lot.
Don't grab her or force a hug, she will NOT have it.

O T Is a ball of softness.  He will let you pick him up and gently hold.

Willow, catch her is you can.  At night she is by my head and when I reach
up to pet her she allows it.  She will get on my lap during the day but,
nothing more than straight fluffing her hair.

I checked with other friends and, cats in general in my circle do not like
to be hugged as it seems to be uncomfortable for them.

Oh, dear no, I wouldn't do that.  I wouldn't hurt my beloved Cats.
No way.
I'll just hug them softer from gnow on.   :)

I have been thinking of this thread all night long and it has really
bothered me. The sound your cats are making is made by pushing air out
through the vocal cords. If you are pushing air out and holding them
like that, they can't take air in. I know you would never hurt your cats
intentionally, and I know you aren't even close to breaking their ribs,
but I didn't know if you realized what you were doing. This is not meant
to be harsh or a flame. I was just really bothered by what you said, so
it may sound severe but my tone is really that of a loving cat slave to
another loving cat slave and if no one explains it then you would never
know.

Purrs,

Thanks Bridget, for thinking of me all night.
I still pick them up IF they let me but I don't hug them .  I just kiss them
on top of their heads and tell them I love them, then, they being squirmy, I
put them down gently.
Okay, that being said, I hope you get a good night's sleep tonite.
No worries, hon.
Sweet Dreams, and thank you for your concern. :)

Neither of mine would allow it.  Kitty Farmcat because she is an ex
semi-feral and a very fierce lady indeed, and Boyfriend because he is timid,
it would horrify and panic him.
We have to have a more gentle relationship.  I wait until they ask for
affection by getting on to my knee of their own accord when I am sitting in
my armchair in the evening.  KFC will do this quite often when she is in the
mood for a bit of petting (note "in the mood" do not ever try to push myself
on her unless I want a slashing.)
It is a wonderful and rare occasion when Boyfriend decides to jump into my
lap.  He kneads every available soft part furiously ;-) and then he settles
down on my chest looking into my eyes.  Often he will stretch out a soft paw
then and touch my face and sometimes put his arm around my neck.
I never thought I would get so far with him.

Awwww, that's so sweet.  :)
I don't hug them any more, don't want to harm them in ANY manner at all.
I just kiss the top of their little heads and tell them I love them.
