Last night not long after I went to bed a major, knock-down-drag-out, fur
flying cat fight broke out. I think it started on the bed - they was much
jumping on me at the beginning, but I was dozing so I wasn't too alert.
By the time it got to the floor right next to the bed, I was fully awake
and roared as loudly as I could - that broke it up. The two perps ran
under the bed - not much choice of direction since a crowd had already
gathered in a semicircle around the fight, much of which scattered when I
roared but enough stayed to tell there had been a crowd - a couple of
latecomers came into the bedroom looking around like "where's the fight?".
I got up and turned on the light only to discover a big mess of cat hair
tufts that had to be cleaned up: long black and white (CJ), and short red
tabby (Dandy). I got the vacuum cleaner monster and turned it on - that
cleared the room of cats as well as the carpet of hair.
That wasn't the first fight last night. The whole evening seemed tense
and I had to break up several altercations, including on that Fleagor (who
never starts fights) started with Avery, and a couple involving CJ and
small females.

It's been crash-bang-thump most of the night here too. The reason
is it's been so windy for so long the cats can't go outside to play
much. Ollie and Courtney are only seven months old so they have a
lot of teenage energy to burn off.
The last few nights it's been so bad that Courtney has snuck up to
me on the bed and whacked me on the nose to tell me to turn the
wind off. Courtney seems to have decided that noses are hoomins'
call buttons.

There was still ice around the back steps yesterday evening, and parts of
the yard are still frozen ... the rest is sucking mud. For a couple of
days recently, there was a steady drip of water off the roof - cats that
went out got wet.
They and I have had just about enough of this winter. I just got back
inside from my afternoon break and can report that there are signs that
spring is at least possible: the first spring bulbs are just poking
through the surface in a couple of places. Unfortunately for the cats,
the arival of spring is several days earlier here in town than it is out
in the country where we live.

Whenever the Fabulous Furballs seem to be getting out of hand I shout "Put a
sock in it the pair of you!" which causes them to immediately stop and give
me a look that says "Who are you yelling at? The fighting cats? But we are
not the cats you are looking for. Us? Fight? The very idea!"

Any idea how the betting was going?
Tis Spring, and the sap is rising and so is the fur. I bear the scars of
several fights over the pillows beneath my head. It is time to sort out the
hierarchy in the clowder and each one wants to be higher in the chain then
the other ones. In our clowder, QC is the top of the feline chain and Qui
Gun Kit is the only one either brave enough or stupid enough to challenge
her. The bottom places are set. Wamsee is the lowest on the ladder
followed by Miss Calico Girl, Tanada, Sonya, Huey, then there is a struggle
for the middle positions between Merlin and Qui Gun Kit, then Pine Cone and
QC. Merlin is a bully. He doesn't seem to realize that taking his
positions depends on defeating Qui Gun. Instead he beats up the four below
him (Tanada is the only one to challenge Wamsee. This makes me wonder if my
once brave and fearless huntress of the bird has lost her cookies) and
thinks that makes him better than Qui Gun, who goes to QC for TLC like a
little kit, and takes on Pine Cone, if he feels it is necessary. Pine Cone
ignores the fighting for the most part, except with Qui Gun Kit forces him
into a fight. It isn't often that we get a fight, but when we do, I swear
the other cats come running with cash in paw to take bets on the outcome.
For all their posturing, there really isn't that much difference in the
social positions of the felines.

I don't think they'd have cash in paw but I can see them betting kibble on
the outcome

It's always safe to bet against CJ - he always loses.

Going by eating order, CJ is just ahead of Tigger (who doesn't bother to
compete) and Spooky (who often gets the first bite, then has to yield).
Those are the only two he hasn't picked a fight with and lost to.

LOL! When Sammy and Demi have a tiff, and everybody else comes running to
see what's happening, it always reminds me of kids in a schoolyard who race
towards the scuffle yelling, "Fight, fight!"

Purrs for peace to reign soon.

That is exactly the image I had. Except the only cats yelling anything
were the two who were actually fighting.
I've been home for a couple of hours now, and there has been only one
minor tiff. The evening is still young though. CJ, the probable agressor
is peacefully stretched out across my lap - he's not even messing with the
keyboard.
