Bettina - 27 Feb 2008 13:50 GMT
Yesterday around 2 pm a neighbour rang at my doorbell and told me that
there`s a cat lying on the road side.
It was my Molly. She had been hit by a car. She was about 7 month old.
I am gonna sell this house and search for another one where no street
is around.

That is why my furbabies will always be indoor cats only.  I value
their lives to much to have them wander outdoor and possibly loosing
them.

Uh, yeah.  But probably best mentioned in a new thread rather than like a

I'm so sorry.  Traffic is one of the reasons we have the enclosure.  The
owners can get to the out without the out getting them.  We've lost a few to
traffic too.

I can't build a permanent enclosure since I live in an apartment.  Persia
has a KittyWalk enclosure on the patio.  It's portable, not that I've (so
far) needed to take it anywhere.

I remember when one of mine was hit by a car, years and years ago.  It
was rather a gruesome shock to come home and find his corpse in a paper
grocery bag on my front steps, but at least thanks to the well-meaning
neighbor who put him there, I KNEW what had happened to him!  Too often,
when an indoor-outdoor cat disappears, you never know whether it ran
off, got lost, was cat-napped or hit by a car.

I am one of those who believes cats are happier when they can come and
go at will, despite the dangers.  (Clearly, if one lives on or near a
very busy street, or the cat has no direct access to outside, one has
little option but to make them indoor cats, but otherwise.....)

I can certainly understand that you were glad to know what had happened,
so you could grieve and heal, rather than be always wondering. You hear
stories about cats showing up years after they disappeared, so it would
be hard to let it go if you don't know.

But I sure hope the neighbor put a note on the bag or something, to
warn you of what was inside! I mean, you're coming up the steps, you see
a paper bag - why would it occur to you that your dead cat would be inside
it?? As you said, a gruesome shock.

I agree, although I also think it depends on the cat. I honestly think
that Licky has no interest whatsoever in going outside. When I open the
front door, he runs away! It's all he can do to cope with the stressors
of the inside of my apartment. Whereas Smudge would probably feel like
she had no reason to live if I didn't let her go out. And Roxy is curious
about what lies beyond the door, when it's open - but once I close it,
she seems to forget about it and go about her business.

I just have to move away here as every morning I dread opening the
door,
fearing that one of cats might be lying dead in front of it, as it
happened that neighbours
took them of the street and put them on the little green spot of grass
at the back door.<sigh>
It is a shame - it is a nature reserve park here around, but that
doesn`t help. Cars still go fast.

Thank you for your love and thank you for your courage of letting your
cats out.

Dear All,

I am so grateful for your love and hugs. They help me a lot.

There is lots and lots of space to the left and to the right and
behind the house.
Meadows, a little brook and the huge garden of my neighbour who has
also some cats.
But one of the most beloved places of all cats here around is along
the slope of the little brook
under the little bridge across the street where there are mousies and
rats and moles to be dug for.
And all of them approach that slope not from this side of the street
but cross the street and have fun on the other side of it. <sigh> Who
knows what cats think?

It was a mistake to move here, but this is such a little street in
nowhereland, 30 km east of Berlin, 50 km near to Poland. I thought
there would be little to no traffic at all. But times change and
through the last years the traffic seem to have grown significantly.
It is still a little street in a tiny 250-soul village.

I will move, I will find a little house away from all streets, but
there will be other dangers. It is with what one has to live letting
cats live a free life.

And - I am one who believes that, yes, there are a few cats which
don`t want the great outside. But most of the cats I know and knew are
just HAPPY to run free and experience the joys of running over green
grass, chasing bugs and duck-feathers in the wind. To climb trees to
their highest point and to rest in the sun, feeling the breeze going
through their fur.
As a freedom loving aquarius myself I never could keep my cats indoors
as I couldn`t stand it myself to be imprisoned. I love to work in the
garden, always surrounded by some of my cats who hope I might find a
new mouse-hole. <g> Supervising my work, slightly wondering which sort
of gigantic mouse I might be after by digging such huge holes in the
earth.<g>
It is Molly`s (and others) death and my grief I pay with allowing free
running here. I know.
But I couldn`t do it differently. Heck - I moved here to give my cats
and me meadows and a garden to play in. The cats I came here with grew
up in an apartement, living there their first year. I was wondering
how they would adapt to the great outside. When I decided to let the
back door open they immediately went out, covering the space behind
the house to find shelter in the little shed behind the house. From
there they explored the garden and other surroundings. It took them 3!
days to become outdoor cats, chasing everything that moved, climbing
trees and running like a stampede over the property. They ARE happy.
Still.
The blood tribute I pay every other year is dreadful. But apart from
my pain I do believe that freedom is worth every danger to be met
outside.
Some may say: "Well, you made your choice, don`t complain." But that
would hurt my heart and would show a great amount of inhuman judging.
Sure, I have to live with the outcome of my decisions as everyone has
to. But I am not willing to keep the cats who DO want to go outside in
a prison.

Anyway - thank you all for your warm hugs ( I needed them desperately)
and for your loving words (needed them too). I think Molly`s death
happened to make the final decision to ultimately look for another
house in a safer area. It is not easy to find an affordable one and to
sell the one we live in now. It is almost 10 years now that we are
here. The surroundings are fantastic for me and my cats (except for
the street). They are so happy here and used to the area. But I
believe they will be happy at another place too. As long as they can
go out and climb some trees.

love and thanks again to you all

I don't think you have to defend yourself, Bettina.  I live in a quiet place
and I choose to let my cats outside too.  It is not impossible that they
might wander on to the road and get hit by one of the 10 cars that go past
here each hour.
I let them out because I have a huge garden and fields beyond that for 2
miles.
American culture is different. It is OK to keep a cat confined to the house
there.  I understand why.   So much traffic and apartments.

Bettina, I agree with you. Some cats really need to be outdoors, despite
the dangers. And I think it's cruel to keep them trapped inside in that
case. I even live in the US, in an urban area (but in a residential
neighborhood that doesn't have a lot of traffic). But I still believe
that my indoor/outdoor cat needs to be able to do it.

I'm lucky that my other two don't seem to need to go out. I wouldn't
allow Roxy out because (1) she has feline herpes, so therefore she's
immune-compromised, and I prefer to keep her vaccinations to a minimum,
and (2) she has a lot of white fur, including a pink nose, so a lot of
sun exposure wouldn't be good for her. Licky has zero interest in the
outdoors. I sincerely believe he's afraid of it. :)

So I don't necessarily believe that "all cats want to go outdoors and
should be allowed to." Some do, and some don't. Some can be let outside
with less risk than others. In Smudge's case, I've decided that her
intense desire to go out makes it worth the risk. She's healthy, smart,
and has a lot of dark fur on the top of her body and head. That doesn't
mean she won't get killed, or seriously hurt. It's very likely that if
I kept her indoors, she would live longer. Or, at least to her, it would
*seem* that way.
