Help!  How can I get Persia here?

It looks like I'm going to be in SC for a lonnnng time.  My brother could
pick up Peaches from the vet and take care of her.  But, sad to say, I don't
really trust him to take care of Persia.  (This is the same guy who, when I
was helping him out after his surgery in October, said I was "babying" her
because I wanted to go home to scoop her litter box and spend a little time
with her each day.)

I absolutely don't want her to be loaded on a plane and treated like cargo.
I don't think the vet's office could do that anyway.  Even if they could,
I'd have nightmares about it.  There are no direct flights from Memphis
International to Savannah, GA.  Who knows what might happen to her?

Things are too up in the air here at the moment for me to go home even for a
week.  Anyone have any suggestions?  Or am I simply stuck leaving her there
for another month, or two, or three...?  I miss her terribly!

A suggestion from a cyberfriend: being frank and speaking boldly:
there are various pet-driving (posh and less posh) across the country
transportation services; I checked them out several years ago when I
moved here - they were so expensive I ended up sending the girls as
pet cargo with Delta which BTW in winter now will *not* have that
"heat"
pet embargo into effect yet (explanation at Delta's cargo web 411)and
flying with my rowdy male cat under my seat. They all sounded very
good on the internet, but I have no personal experience with pet
transportation services. If you decided on that solution perhaps you
could get your LLL to pay for Persia's trip.....check it all out.
Note: charge could be much less for your state-to-state route than
it was for FL to MileHigh, a longer route.

Does this mean that it's time to arrange a relay?????  Are they any
Tennessee-ans or others in between TN & SC willing to transport????

I talked to Rob.  He is willing to travel to Memphis Tenn with me, provided
that we don't push ourselves. Then drive across to Chattanooga TN, down
towards Atlanta and over to where you are in South Carolina.  We can't leave
until February 29th,  With Persia and/or Peaches pick up on Monday March 3
and the rest of the trip from there.  Gas and lodging  money would help, but
we'll manage on our own if needed.  We have the van, and room for both
carriers.  I'd rather not do the trip in one long haul, though I can if
forced to.  Will that help?  Let me know soonest so we can get the show on
the road.

Thank you both so very much BUT... I absolutely wasn't thinking when I wrote
this post!  I mean, once I got Persia here I'd have the exact same problem
getting her back home again!!!  'Cause I didn't drive here, you know?  So
she'll have to stay where she is.  I honestly don't know what I was
thinking.  I just miss my fluffy gal so much.  But truly, thank you for such
a wonderful offer.  (Oh, and of course gas & lodging would have been
covered, as long as you weren't staying in 5-Star hotels along the way!)

Jill, if you can trust us to get the girls there, you can trust this
group to get the three of you back to Memphis when the time comes.
D*MN IT I was looking forward to a road trip and to get to meet you
and Julie and have getting out of Fayetteville for a while.
Seriously, I'd be willing to help arrange for transport back to
Memphis when the time comes.

Talked to the kids.  Mike is a very responsible driver.  If you can
wait for the week following March 6.  Either Mike or I could drive
your car back to you and you would have it there for transportation.
Spring Break starts March 6 and runs to March 12.  If you can get us
your keys we can get your transportation.

This group is so great. I can't help in any practical way, being half way
across thw world, but I am so so proud, honoured and humbled to be part of
RPCA.

Depending on the airline, Persia will be able to travel back as hand
luggage with you for about $100. Robbie came up from Belize via
Houston to Washing DC as my hand luggage, and he got a lot of admiring
glances from the cabin crew en-route!

I know, and I've considered it.  But then I realized lugging a 16-lb. cat
through the airport along with my carry-on and purse would be no easy task!
I have enough trouble carrying her from the car into the vet's office and
that's generally less than 30 feet!  Note:  I *always* wind up catching a
flight out of the last gate on the concourse.  Don't any planes ever depart
from Gate 1?!!!  LOL

Might I suggest a cat carrier with wheels?

Could your brother pick Persia up from the vet and meet you with her halfway
to your parents place?

Normally that would be asking a lot, but you've kind of put your life on
hold here.

Does such a beast exist? Luggage with wheels make such a horrible
noise on hard airport floors- that would probably be too
distressing for a cat.

Yes, they make them.  I googled for some.  There's a Sherpa one listed
online on sale at PetSmart.  I'm afraid it would be too small (read:
uncomfortable) for Persia.  And if it's too big to fit under the seat on the
plane she'd be checked as cargo which I absolutely refuse to do.

He's too busy (his words, not mine).  He did ask yesterday whether I thought
our older brother coming down might help so I could come back home for a few
weeks (to prepare for coming back again).  Did he forget we have the same
brother?  LOL  Um, no, I really don't think his coming here would help; in
fact, he might drive her crazy.

Yes, I know.  And things are quite different down here.  While I don't live
in Memphis proper, shopping is much more convenient back home.  Produce at
the grocery store here is truly seasonal.  I can't find leeks (yet) to make
my yummy potato leek soup, for example.  And Mom gets cold so easily.  She's
wearing long underwear, slacks & sweaters and has the heat cranked to 79F.
I'm wearing shorts and tank-tops to keep from melting like the Wicked Witch
of the West!

Ah, fond memories of visiting my mom in her later years.  Thank Bast her
apartment had a balcony where I could go out for a few minutes to get some
air and cool off.

Sweety, if you get Persia to you somehow now, she can fly back with
you on the plane when you go home... of course you miss her enormously
and want her with you!
