Celebration! Birthday!

Hans Schr?der - 23 Nov 2004 01:15 GMT On this date, November 23 2002, my deeply loved female Devon Rex, Tin?viel, gave birth to the litter which later was known as "the Egyptians". They were named Teti, Teos, Isis and Darius, all names from ancient Egyptian mythology or from Egyptian faraoes. Tin?viel is my ex-wife's cat, so the litter was born at her place and lived the first weeks there, but then they came to me, both Tin?viel and the four kittens. So I had the great pleasure to watch them grow up until they were old enough to go to new owners.
I was lucky, I could keep Teti, a classic silver/black tabby, and when Tin?viel showed that she was so much happier being with me instead of my ex, she stayed with me as well.
So, today I'm celebrating Teti! He is a male cat, definitely. All muscles, a broad face and chest, and a lot of hormones running around in him. No, he is not neutered, he is an indoor cat, and he is waiting for at least two girls to come and visit him... Of course, these hormones sometimes leads him to perform some "improper actions" from time to time, like peeing in our landlady's bed. Not very wise of him, but she doesn't get too upset: She loves cats just as much as me, maybe even more, so she forgives him every time, as long as I do the laundry afterwards...;-)
What more can I say about this guy? Well, he is extremely social, he is the first one to wish new people welcome into the house. He talks a lot, telling us about everything he is about to do or has done. For example, a visit to the litter box will always result in a three minutes monologue on how it was in there.
Being an indoor cat requires som exercise. He solves this problem by chasing and fighting his mother every now and then. Tin?viel hisses and growls, and fights back. Seems that both of them have a wonderful time. And at night, they both sleep between my legs...
Any ideas for a proper birthday present for my little 2 year old hero? I not, it will be another can of tuna, I guess...

I'm quite tempted to get one, though I'm sure the last thing my house needs is more scratching posts for my one kitty:

It is so well made, that I think it's going to last for at least another three years.
But it was a good idea!

You can't have too many scratching posts. We made our crew a scratching post similar to the one in the webpage, but ours is bigger. They love it! We have at least a dozen scratching posts/surfaces for the cats scattered around the house.

My thoughts exactly. I only have one cat, but she currently has two scratching posts and is using her kitty mind-domination tricks to work me up to getting her another, grander one.
Hey, the more legal scratching surfaces around, the better.
Speaking of scratching surfaces -- I got Oscar a little mat that has a rope-like surface on one side. She will sometimes pull on it (kind of like a horizontal scratching post) and sometimes just lie down on it. She seems to find it comforting. Maybe one of those? Cheaper than a scratching post!

Cheaper than a scratching post! Ahem... I've read a bit about Oscar, Eros and so on lately, but there is one thing confusing me: How did a female cat get the name Oscar?
I know that before I was born, my parents wanted me to be a girl, they had three boys before, so they had already found the name Marit Helene for me, but... Another boy, so I was named after two great grandfathers instead. But Oscar for a female cat?? Why?

When I first got Oscar, she was about eight weeks old. She was born to a stray and had lived under a neighborhood deck for the first weeks of her life, and I took her to the vet right away to get her checked out. The vet said that he couldn't be sure, but thought the kitten was male. After some deliberation and study of the kitten's attitude and looks, I named it Oscar, as in Sesame Street's Oscar the Grouch.
As far as I knew, Oscar was "male" until I took "him" to the vet to be neutered. I got a phone call informing me that the cat was female; what would I like them to do? I, flabbergasted, told them to go ahead and spay ... her.
Unlike many cats, Oscar definitely knew her name, and it seemed to me that I'd be tempting fate to ask her to learn a new one. No feminine names sound much like Oscar. So, Oscar the girl cat. My parents inquire about "Oscarina," "Oscaria", and other variations. I call her Oscar, Osh kosh begosh, Oscar Meyer, and Oscar Spumante, as well as KitKat, Kitling, and Catling. I guess I needn't have worried about her learning a name. I will occasionally refer to her, though never to her face, as "the ice queen." Sometimes I wonder if her general grumpiness has to do with the fact that she knows she has a boy's name =P
People have since asked me, incredulously, how I could have missed the fact that "his" balls never dropped. Well, I'd never had a kitten before, and I didn't notice the absence of the event. I didn't spend a whole lot of time poking around "his" nether regions to find out; I just kind of figured the vet would be right.

That same thing happened to us with my old cat Cellie. I got a phone call, too, telling me he was a boy. Unfortunately, the vet discovered he was a boy after he'd already made the spay incision and couldn't find any ovaries. After that we called him "The Cat in Drag." Poor Cellie came home neutered with a spay incision, too.

A friend of mine has a similar story. She'd found a new owner at the shelter. As was standard shelter practice in that county, said new owner was duly packed off to TED for spaying [the cat would be picked up by the new slave post-surgery]. My friend got a very interesting phone call from TED's office: "Mrs. Flores, about your cat who's here to be spayed, *he* is already neutered." And yep, the poor little mutant [as my friend and I both started calling him] had a shaved belly when he came home. :-)

I once knew a girl cat named Trevor, her slave's ex-husband named her, he thought it was funny, the name stuck though.

I could think of lots of presents for a young lad like Teti; all kinds of toys. I'm facing a more difficult problem. My Frank will be 17 on Saturday. What do you give the older cat who has it all? And who only really wants to lay on your pillow and sleep all day?

He found his own way to celebrate: Peeing in our landlady's bed again... Fortunately, she loves him quite as much as I do, so he survived this time, too :-)
