How? How do they know? I got my refund yesterday. Today I get home from
work and notice he has some tissue sticking out of his anus. Off to the
emergency vets. So much for my refund.
I could have waited until in the morning, but I'm really glad I didn't.
The tissue was less serious that it looked but I have to watch him
closely to see if he gets a prolapse - i.e. his rectum starts coming out
because he has strained too much. The likely culprit of the whole thing
is a UTI. They didn't run a test to confirm it, but he looks healthy
otherwise and is running a slight fever for a cat - not enough to be
sure if he really has a fever or if he is sick. I just know that the
only time he has ever been sick it was a UTI and it got so serious so
fast it was scary.
They gave him a steroid shot to get rid of the swelling and an
antibiotic shot for a suspected infection and I have to give him
antibiotics for the next 5 days.
If it is an infection, I like the idea of getting a jump on it before it
gets really serious like it could in just the next 12 hours. I feel so
much better about having gone and I know I did the right thing and I am
glad I had the extra money to take care of him.
He would probably like a few purrs though. HE got stuffed in a carrier
and had to endure the horribleness of the TED and having the other cats
mug him with questions when I got home He wasn't very polite when he
told them to go the h*ll away!
relieved,
Bridget

For my life pre-Joel I was always amazedhow the Universe used to conspire to
take any extra money I had gotten away by some unexpected emergency - the
cost was always almost the exact amount of the extra money.
Post-Joel I see it differently and I thank the Universe for providing me
with just what I need to cope with those unexpected emergencies (and I know
better than to spend such extra money quickly or frivolously these days)

Considering what the poor baby had been through, I would probably tell
others to go to H**l too. Purrs for him.

Well, inspection this morning, much against his will, shows marked
improvement. The swelling has gone down a great bit and the little bit
that is still showing is the right color and not a bright red. He is
still behaving normally. I haven't seen him drink, but I have seen him
eat, so I assume that those things are normal. I may get a glass of
water for him to drink out of. He loves to share my glasses of water!
I am considering starting him on canned food for a while until I know
for sure that he is back to normal just to make sure that he is getting
plenty of water. Ideas on that would be appreciated. I don't know
whether to keep everything the same just to make sure that it isn't a
change that is the problem. My life stays remarkably constant so I could
say to the vet last night that there were absolutely no changes - the
food was constant, the environment was constant, there are no plants, no
food change, no eating of human food, and no strings or thread although
he doesn't eat those anyway when they are present. I don't keep cleaners
that would be harmful to a cat even if they got into the concentrated
stuff and absolutely nothing new has entered my apartment for 2 weeks,
not even groceries. So if I change his food, that might give him
diarrhea which could exacerbate the anal problem even though he might be
getting more fluids.
What do you guys think?
Bridget

sounds like you got it all covered. I wouldn't change anything right nor
Diarrhea right now does not sound like a thing you want to deal with. You
are doing fine, relax and breath a bit.

Yeah, they do seem to know, don't they. Same thing happened to us when DH's
mom sent us some unexpected cash - it all went towards our vet's Hawaiin
vacation! ;>

Marion just got back from seeing a bunch of patients in London to find
the credit card statement including Courtney's hip surgery waiting.
Which came to quite a bit more than she'd earned on the trip.
