First off, blanket purrs to all who need them. I haven't been able to
keep up with posting, but I've been reading and getting the purr-motors
revving.

Now, for the off-topicness, that I'm only bringing up here because I
know there are at least a handful of slaves here who are also owned by rats.

I have two rats; Toby, a neuter boy who is the oldest of the current set
since I lost both of his companions to intestinal problems; and
Samantha, a probably 8-12 week old intact girl, acquired a bit over two
weeks ago and intended to be a companion for Toby (providing they get
along) once I'm fairly sure she's healthy and she can no longer squeeze
through the bars of the main cage. Over the past few days, Samantha has
been getting noticeably thicker around the midsection without getting
thicker elsewhere to match. She doesn't seem to be swelling under her
nipples like she would if she were lactating, though, and she has me
thoroughly confused. If anyone here could give me some pointers on how
to tell if a rattie girl is pregnant, I'd really appreciate it.

I have rats myself. You can't really tell until about the 2nd week of
gestation when their tum gets really round and it's more than just a
pot belly. Try posting this question on the Rat Shack
(www.jorats.com). You'll get better answers there and if you include
some photo's that'll really help. If she is pregnant, she'll be due in
the next week as the gestation period in only 21 days.

OMG I saw rats and was sure she meant cats.  Not blind, just can't see!

Thank you thank you thank you for the link. I wasn't able to get any
decent photos (Sam is *incredibly* squirmy whenever she's out of the
cage or my shirt) so I didn't make a post, but after looking through the
archives and links, all signs (behavior changes, losing fur around
nipples, lack of any signs of estrous for the past few days I've been
checking) point to pregnant baby rattie rather than baby rattie with a
pot belly. So, I shall be continuing the unlimited lab blocks, making
sure she gets plenty of high-protein treats, and hoping she has a small
but healthy litter.

If anyone wants to hear updates here, let me know. I don't want to annoy
with too much off-topicness, even though the household kitties are
perhaps too fond of the rats...

Glad to help and I'm always interested in ratties, so please keep me
updated. Mama rat will need extra protein when she has her litter. I
think the rat shack is an excellent forum and they are always ready to
look at adorable photos of rats, especially babies.

I adopted a pregnant rat, so I know what it's like wondering if your
rat is pregnant and the excitement when she is in labor and the babies
are born. I hope she has a small and healthy litter too and that all
goes well.

I'm interested!  I have rats as well.  The cats pretty much ignore them,
though, thankfully.  :~)

I for one would be happy to hear updates, I think most people here care
about all animals.

I haven't had any rats for years; when my kids were kids we had some
in cages
right in living area where we could keep an eye on their welfare, as
we did have
at that time one cat, Toopy. I can't understand how cats and rats
could be
companions much less pals....once in awhile Toops would stick her nose
into
the bar spaces in their cage and the rats would take a nip from her
nose, which
she remembered for awhile and stopped considering them easy prey for
some time.
They never bit us and although I loved the cat far more I didn't mind
the rats nor
the care they required. You know how kids are, "oh, please, I'll take
care of them".
Yeah, right.

LOL.  I feed my rats through the bars of their cage quite a bit and so
anything that comes close is fair game, as far as they're concerned.  They
don't bite me unless I poke my finger through and even then it's not hard.
I think a cat claw kneading into your behind while you're sleeping is much
more alarming!  :~)
