Do your cats snore?

Bobcat - 18 Feb 2008 15:36 GMT This morning I was sitting on the bed tieing my shoes when I heard The Sound. It came from the cat bed on the floor beside the radiator, a favourite napping spot of The Girls, especially in the winter. It was Martha snoring. It's a delightful sound much like a human snore but much quieter. All three Girls do it, and it's on my list of favourite sounds: (1) cats purring, (2) cats snoring, and (3)Mooch our resident stray talking to me while I give him his food and water on the veranda.
What are your favourite kitty sounds?

Hi Bobcat, Our Rosie snores. It is kind of a squeak and can be loud enough to be heard from another room. I love that sound because it means she is comfortable and feels safe enough to sleep soundly, unlike her start in life without a home. I also love the sound of purring. Ironically, when my husband occasionally snores, it sounds like a purr, too. Cinder and Rosie both purr. When I am surrounded with purrs, it gives me a peaceful feeling that where I am at that moment, all is well. The chattering sound they make at birds amuses me. I appreciate the sound of someone scratching around in the litter box. It sure beats the alternative. Annie

LOL John says I don't snore, I purr! I figure it's because I'm a Leo ;)

When she was a young cat, she got out and was hit by a car. When I retrieved her from the vet, she was still a big groggy and must have slept quite heavily in the special bed I made up for her downstairs, where she could easily find her food, water and litter if she woke up during the night. I didn't want her over-exerting herself!
I woke in the middle of the night to find her on my pillow, her nose wedged in my ear, and snoring loudly. So much for the special convenient bed!

mir has a very quiet purr usually, so when she actually purrs aloud, i feel very honoured. another sound i love is when she yodels. her meow goes into a falsetto in the middle, then back to her normal voice.

HRFL Tiger snoring (he has a loud squeaky snore!). HRFL Tiger purring (he has a deep rumbly purr that he only ever uses with me). Miss Lily Whiskers trilling to say hello and her constant yapping and chatting to the dog as she orders Cara around.

My boys absolutely snore, and it's adorable. Tiny little honk-shus. Stinky makes a noise on the exhale like the world's tiniest harmonica. ;)
But all the noises they make are my favorites, and they make a lot of them. I particularly love the little "oof!" sound Stinky lets out when he jumps down to the floor.

As for the "oof" sound, Sophie and Emily are both overweight and their "oofs" when they land on the floor are my fourth favourite kitty noises!

As I posted a few days ago, I'm the lucky one. That was one good deed that was its own reward.

Ever since we've fed him and given him a warm bed in the winter. And I feel the same as you do - that it's "one good deed that was its own reward".

Pearl wheeze snores at times because of her asthma I suppose. Soemtimes now she likes to sleep next to my head, with her head on my pillow and sometimse her snoring transmits through the pillow and wakes me up. I often too hear Sugar snoring on the cat tree behind the chair I sit in. It's very funny.

Or that's what I was told by a vet. Boots snores, because she has polyps in her nose. She also has them in her ears. It kind of goes along with herpes. It *is* a cute sound though.

She says it's normal, depending on how the cats are lying when they're snoring - just like people. Also, many people here and at another cat group say their cats snore. I can only assume they can't all be ill, just as snoring people can't all have illnesses. But Emily is due for her annual booster shots this week, and I'll check with our vet again. If she says something different, I'll get back here.
Granby - 18 Feb 2008 23:05 GMT Well, my orange guy snores and there is no doubt it is a snore. He sleeps on his back with all paws in the air, his mouth partly open and snores. Sometimes Piglet, the alpha cat, will go slap him on the head to make him turn over so he will be quiet. Much like humans do!. Vet checked him out and said all is well that some cats just do this. But, many snoring people *do* have an illness/physical problem that causes the snoring. Enlarged adenoids, too-small airways, or polyps, etc.. Polyps in cats aren't anything to worry about. It's just something she has. Boots snores regardless of what position she's sleeping in, unlike DH who can be shoved over on his side and the snoring stops. I suppose we could fit Bootsie with a little kitty-CPAP machine. :-)

She also > has them > in her ears. It kind of goes along with herpes. > It *is* a cute sound though. Roxy's the snorer around here, and she does have herpes, so it doesn't surprise me. She's often a little bit stuffed up. Another cute noise she makes involves begging for food. I eat dinner in the living room, and use the coffee table as a dinner table. I sit on the floor and lean back against the couch. Roxy gets on the couch behind me, puts one paw on my shoulder and leans forward so that her nose is close to my ear. Then she sniffs loudly into my ear, in-out-in-out-in-out. It's really funny. Not a very subtle hint. :)
They all have wonderful and different-sounding purrs. Licky's is loud and deep, and he loves to purr in the bathtub so it gets maximum resonance.
Roxy has a little, multi-syllabic squeak for a meow. She does it when she's excited about being fed.

Boots (the snorer)...also only has that little squeak for a meow. ....I don't think the polyps are anything to worry about. The vet found the ear polyps with the ear-light-thingy (what's that called?)...the image showed up on the computer screen so that I could see them too. Grosssss.....he then asked if she snored, and when I said yes, he said she most definitely has them in her nose too, since they're usually found along with ear polyps. Said they shouldn't cause a problem.

Harri kitten snores sometimes, depending on the position she's in. When she jumps into my lap and assumes the position for an arm snuggle, she snores with the cutest little wheezing sound. I've asked the vet about it, and he says it's nothing to worry about.
Amelia loves to sleep in the upstairs bathroom on top of the heater grate. As soon as I walk into the bathroom she greets me with a trilling meow.
Sammy occasionally walks into the bathroom as I'm drying off from the shower and gives me a long dissertation about something of great importance. I haven't yet figured out what it is, so I don't know whether he's telling me the winning numbers for the next Powerball drawing or telling me that my feet stink.
And Ranger has a special meow that seems to be reserved for times when he thinks other kitties are getting too much attention. It has a special whining quality that, were it coming from a human child, would indicate displeasure. It always results in more pets for the Rangemaster.

The girls don't really snore, but every now and then in their sleep I'll hear one of them make this little grunt that sounds like "HRRRRRRNnnrrrumbbbbblllle ending with a few kitty lipsmacks.
Nina's signature sound is not so much a mew as it is a high pitched double chirp, as if she were a canary, or had recently ingested one. (An impossibility, as she has no accesss to any canaries.) But it's a very cute sound.
I love both their purrs--Francesca's is deep and rapid, while Nina's is slow and soft, unless she's feeling VERY affectionate.

Wayne Mitchell - 19 Feb 2008 14:32 GMT >What are your favourite kitty sounds? Both Will and Heidi can purr loud and long, and there's no sound that beats it. When I get caught in the middle, it's just like being in a twin-engine aircraft.
Heidi snores a lot, and Will snores occasionally.
But the most startlingly delightful sound I hear is the little "yike!" that Will makes occasionally when encouraging his toys to play their hardest. I wish I could hear that one more often.
