Batley, one of the "Dynamic Duo", is very ill. He was neutered and had
all his shots last monday, and started having seizures tuesday night.
We took him to the vets, and she said she didn't know what was causing
them, to contact the E-clinic's internist to see if he could figure it
out. I left messages for the internist to call me, but he hasn't yet -
and Batley is going downhill, fast. He has small seizures that last a
minute or so, and they come every 2 to 3 minutes. The only relief he
gets is when he is sleeping, and I have been helping him with that by
giving him an antihistamine. His belly is bloated, and he hasn't gone
to the litterbox by himself since Sat. morning. I am going to see if
I can get him in to my vets this morning. I might have to make the
decision to PTS.
Why, why are they all dying - Since May I have lost 4 to kidney
failure - Ceridwen, Gabriel, Bobby and Amanda, and 1, Katie to
pneumonia. And now it looks like Batley may join them. The tests that
my vet sent to Cornell came back inconclusive, and now they are seeing
if they can grow the virus that may be causing this. That will take a
couple weeks or more.
Teddy is heartbroken, and so are we.
I want it to stop. Now.

I'm soooo sorry to hear this. Can you not take him to the emergency clinic
rather than wait for a phone call? Purrs for a good, easy outcome on the

I don't know what to say. How awful. Do your cats go out and perhaps have
come into contact with some weird contaminant in the neighbourhood? If so,
it might have an impact on human health too and you could alert local health
officials to look into it.
If they stay inside, I have no clue, only do be careful about the chemicals
you use to clean your house. Do not ever use Jeyes Fluid around animals
they can take it in through their pads. I lost a ferret like this, thinking
I was keeping his hutch ultra clean. The ingredient that caused his death
was phenol which is in a lot of disinfectants not just Jeyes.
This is only an idea. A UK zoo had their tigers die over a length of time
through using phenol-based disinfectants for their houses.
My heart goes out to you. Something is surely causing it and I hope you
find out very soon what it is.

Hi Tweed,
My guys don't go outside at all, and we are very careful about the
cleaning liquids we use. The only things that the RB cats had in
common were they all ate the same food, and they all had a cat virus
early in 2007. The vets think that the virus is the cause, but haven't
been able to pin it to one thing.
We have changed foods, just in case.

I see that Batley has gone to RB too now. If your vet is not able to
pinpoint the cause why all your cats are dying so young, maybe it's time to
ask for a second opinion.
Is there a veterinary university or school he/she could refer you to?
You simply cannot go on like this with your vet saying "uh, sorry, don't
know.."
It is bad enough to lose one. Losing so many is bad for your mental health
and the root cause has to be found NOW. There has got to be a reason.
I am so sorry this is happening to you and I send you prayers and hugs that
the cause will be found soon.

Was wondering if the cats were in any genetically connected.

It's true that there could be a genetic susceptibility to kidney failure. I
used a champion whippet to mate with my girl. He was 5 yo at the time. At 7
yo he was dead of kidney failure, and it was passed on to his sons, my boys,
who all died of it too early.
Didn't seem to affect his girl children too much. Which is interesting to
know why this is.

Getting neutered and getting multiple vaccines at the same time can
often be a recipe for disaster and I have heard of cats dying from the
overload to their system. I would look at a vaccine reaction (possibly
to more than one) as a possibility. In the future, it would be wise to
space vaccines out at least several weeks. It's much better for the
cat and that way, if there is a reaction, you will know which vaccine
is causing it. What vaccines did he get?

>cat and that way, if there is a reaction, you will know which vaccine

He had his rabies vaccination (mandatory) and the FVRCP combo shot.
The vet thinks that the rabies shot has caused the problems w/seizures
and co-ordination problems. Oh, and she said that there have been
cases where the modified live virus rabies shot has GIVEN the pet
rabies. Very rare, but it does happen. So, we have to keep him crated
for another 3 days (10 day incubation normally), then he can be let
loose. But, if he dies, they will need the body to rule out rabies. I
told her that I was p**sed as hell about it, and if it does come down
to the vaccine causing the problem, the manufacturer is definitely
going to hear about it. I usually do space the shots out, but didn't
this time. Kicking myself in the tuchas for that mistake!

One thing is for sure, your cat should never receive another
vaccination ever again and it's totally appropriate to not vaccinate
this kitty. FYI, as far as states requiring rabies, a rabies vaccine
can be bypassed if the cat has a known reaction, or has health issues
of any kind. If you, in the future, have to deal with such a sutation,
all your vet has to do is write a waiver (and put it in the cats file)
that states that your cat cannot receive the rabies vacciine due to
x,y or z. I have had to to do this several times over the years and
have never had an issue.
