jofirey - 14 Feb 2008 20:18 GMT I have a series of pictures I use in a Webshot screensaver Kayla as a pup, the kids playing baseball. A gorgeous golden cat from this group with his tongue out at bit. Some close ups of our flowers. Two other cats from the group cuddled on a sofa. And Britta's picture of 'frog in bamboo'

For a long time, it was a close-up of me skydiving on my 70th birthday. After my trip to Australia last October, I changed it to a photo I took near Alice Springs. It shows a beautiful red river gum (eucalyptus) tree by a dry river bed. That sounds stark and depressing, but I love it and feel filled with peace whenever I look at it.

But I created a nice desktop at home, with varying shades of brown and gold, and a desert photo smack in the center. It's very restful.
(Usually I have a cat picture - often of a cat belonging to someone on this newsgroup. TJ's Dusty, Vino, Caliban, Randy's Tippy, and many others have graced my screen at different times.)

At home my setup is like that, but I have a picture of an alchemist's workshop as my backdrop on one monitor (I can't persuade MacOS 9 to put a backdrop picture on both of them). At work (a bookshop) I use this:

which drives my boss nuts - he dislikes all animals and has images from the BBC's Doctor Who series (twee smugly-English kiddy-SF originally from the 1960s) as his backdrops.
Though I have to say only one of the books on that kitten's shelf would meet our criteria for saleability.

I've been in a bookshop that had cats draped on the shelves just like that - an intellectual.left-wing place near Taksim Square in Istanbul. They had at least five cats in residence, and they just flopped down wherever they wanted. It had lots of odd corners, and shelves going way up to serious ladder height, so there were probably more I didn't see, up with the more obscure stuff like Dutch dictionaries. It was a bit like a "how many can you spot?" children's puzzle picture.

That's great. There's a store something like that in Oakland (California), one of those lefty used bookstores with a zillion old books, comfy chairs to sit and read in, old, creaky wooden floors, etc. But there isn't a single cat in residence! Every time I go in there I tell them that their store desperately cries out for a cat.
I remember a bookstore in Seattle that had about 5 or 6 kittens running all over the place. That was fun. I barely even looked at the books!

Thanks, I've been using one of the pictures that came with the lap top (I'm using Jim's old breakdown) a picture of waterlilies. Pretty, but not a cat.

Have been a fan of the Dr Who series since early teenagerhood (when I was younger it scared me stupid), but I am *really* enjoying the 'new' series. I thought Christopher Eccleston was hot until I saw David Tennant. And I thought David Tennant was hot until I saw John Barrowman. Still, I wouldn't chew my own arm off if I happened to wake up in bed with any of them lying on said arm :-)

WOR, channel 9 in NYC aired some of the series (no one seems to remember this but me). Pretty sure they were not current at the time since I remember a few Hartnells. I was totally baffled by the show at first: production values were horrendous compared to the current US Star Trek and it took me a few eps to understand the accent and slang patterns but it caught on with me. They only aired it for a short time and then there was nothing until the public stations started airing Who some years later. The new show are terrific despite what some sour grape purists say.
As for waking up and chewing my arm off, my taste tends more toward Rose than the doctor. Freema (sp?) is OK but she's no rose. I only saw Catherine in the xmas special and while not as cute I liked her far better than Freema.
Oh, remember the scene where the doctor picks up the cat and chats with it for a sec? I ended on topic!

I had a more active-type one until I found out from reading an article on the lines of "how to save money on your fuel bills without really trying" that those with rushing waterfalls etc use significantly more electricity. I have these periodic economy drives ;-) since the price of electricity has risen over 20 per cent in the UK recently. It was also advised to switch the monitor off as it consumes the most energy, if you leave the computer for a while. Previously, once my computer was on I used to leave it on until I went to bed and let it fall back to screensaver mode because it takes a while to boot up again and so a pain to switch off. Now if I am not sitting in front of it for a while I turn the monitor off. I won't really know if I am saving anything since energy prices are rising so much (gas, as well) that I can't compare with when they were stable.
For my desktop I alternate between a head study photo of Kitty FC and one of Boyfriend. I change it back and forth every three months or so, just to show no favouritism: although I think KFC has been there six months or more - might be time to change it back to my handsome boy, eh?

The fuel tax in the UK is the highest anywhere, or nearly so. The political bargain that was made in the US was that the federal and state motor fuel taxes would be used to build and maintain roads. This still is more or less the case.
The price of milk is about the same here.
