Smokey, our 14YO DSH has been feeling poorly.  Listless, sleeps *all* the
time (has even slept through breakfast which is most unusual).  DW took him
to the Vet for his annual exam.  Vet did blood work and found everything
fine except the kidney values.  Thought it might be either an infection or
the beginning of renal failure.  So the Vet prescribed an amoxycillin tab
twice daily and acidophilus(sp?) powder to mix in with his wet food.  The
acidophilus is to keep the amoxycillin from upsetting his stomach.

He detests having his food mucked with - didn't eat any of his moist food
for 3 days and just nibbled at the dry.  Ramona (DW) devised a way to get
the acidophilus down him.  She mixes in the prescribed amount (1/4 tsp) in
1-2 ounces of milk and gives it to him from an eye dropper.  He doesn't like
to procedure, but he loves milk so much he puts up with it.

Anyway, please get your kits to reve up their motors for Smokey to feel
better and not to have major kidney problems.

Thanks, folks.

Purrs for Smokey a'comin' -- does Smokey also like yogurt?  I've mixed
acidophilis powder with vanilla yogurt before and my cats will go for the
yogurt bigtime -- the Yoplait custard vanilla yogurt is the favorite with
the furfolk.  At least if that works, you'll get the live cultures in the
yogurt, too.

Christine

Gee, I don't know, Christine, but that's a great idea.  I'll go to the 7-11
for some as soon as I'm done with the group tonight.  Thanks for the idea.

Always gets my attention in a cat that age.  Powerful kidney purrs for
Smokey.

Health purrs on the way.  In some grocery stores you can buy "Sweet
Acidophilus" milk.  Since Smokey loves milk, this might do the trick without
the dropper, thus easing the stress for both Ramona and Smokey.

He wasn't eating again today so Ramona called the vet.  Vet suggested
discontinuing the amoxycillin and the acidophilus to see if he would stop
eating again..  We'll try that first.  If that doesn't work, he goes back to
the vet first.  If the vet wants to restart the amoxy, I'll try Christine
and/or Jill's suggestion about acidophilus yogurt and the acidophilus milk.

Thanks, guys.

As usual, the power of purr is truly awesome.  After talking to the vet, we
discontinued the acidophilus powder in the food and the amoxycillin tablet.
Smokey's started eating again.  Not the big appetite yet that he used to
have, but he is *ready* when mealtime comes.  Leads us into the kitchen,
supervises the doling out of food, and goes right to it when it's put down
for him.

As to the kidney levels, the doc thought it was more important for him to
eat right now and build up his strength a bit before resuming the meds.

Thanks to all for the purrs,
Sam

What a relief! It's always such a worry when they don't eat. We're still
purring for Smokey to recover completely.

We're sending purrs that Smokey feels better pronto, and that whatever
is bothering your boy is minor and easily treated.
