Every time I walk down the street I stop and say hello to the family
of beautiful outdoor cats who live down by the post-office. (yes, they
live at a house, they're not feral/stray... they have covered over
catcarriers on the front porch to sleep in and they're not afraid of
people at all.) There are about six of them, but they're not all
friendly... the first one to come out and meet me was Russet. S/he
isn't at all afraid of people - quite the opposite. The first time I
walked by and stopped to say hello (I always greet the cats I see on
my walks,, even though most of them totally ignore me), s/he came
bounding up to me and circled my legs! And she only got friendlier
from there.

Russet must have told her siblings about the friendly stranger,
because a few visits later, her littermate Peaches came out to say hi.
Peaches loves to be petted, and he/s (since his coat is a diluted
ginger I'm assuming he's male!)

And a few visits after THAT, Mama-san came out to inspect me and to
see if I was a suitable person to consort with her offspring! She's a
BIG cat with very ragged ears that have obviously seen more than a few
tussles... she looks like a ruffian, and she's a bit wary, so she
perches up on top of the fence instead of rolling around on the ground
like the others... but she purrs her head off when I scritch those
ragged ears!

Sometimes I have all three of them up on the fence in a row, and they
obviously wish I had three hands because they ALL want to be petted
and scritched at the same time... and last time I was there, I saw ALL
the kitties in the family at once. There were two pretty
torty/white/tabby kitties meatloafing in the sun, and a much larger,
very ragged-eared tabby/white cat lying around with them. I talked to
them gently and tried to persuade them to say hi, but they didn't want
to. They didn't run away though, so that's progress! And Mama-san came
down off the wall and walked over to me to sniff my fingers - then she
went back up to her perch... I'll see if I can get a shot of them all
some time when the weather's nice and they're sunning themselves. :)

They're all sweet looking cats.

They're all GORGEOUS! Well, except for Mama-san but that's just
because she's had a rough life... Russet is such a cutie-pie I wish I
could steal her away home with me! But regular petting sessions will
have to do. :)

No clue... I wouldn't know how to tell a boycat from a girlcat to save
my life, and there are two equally beatup adult cats living there.
It's just that the other one (a tabby and white) isn't interested in
coming over to see me and the grey is. I thought tomcats were more
standoffish than queens, and they didn't like having their kittens
around once they grew up? This cat doesn't mind having the others near
it... when I go over to pet it on the fence, Russet and Peaches jump
up too and they're all right up against each other without so much as
a 'mind your manners' swat. I'm quite open to the idea that that's
Papa-san instead. :)

Mama-San looks very much like a Boy-cat to me too.

Fine, so he's Papa-san then. Never having knowingly known a tomcat in
my life, I'll take your word for it. Is that why the back of his head
is very lumpy-bumpy?
