My son was burning brush behind our house and had thrown some gas to start
the fire. He then sat down in a chair and suddenly this little furry thing
ran up his leg. He has an artificial leg so it was quite a clind for a
three week old kitten. Even though none of us liked cats, by the time we
bottle fed Mz Piglet, we were hers.
> You rescued/ trapped them:
Guess you could say we rescued O T. Mahoney. The people that had him were
both mentallly retarded. When they said their cat had kittens, I decided to
helop find homes. Why I say we rescued is that when we went to get O T he
was hungry, covered with fleas and just plain aweful looking. Now he is my
baby.

Lee, from here, had a friend fron another newsgroup who had a kitten she
needed to rehome. Problem was Julie lived in Texas and we in Illinois. Lee

A friend's cat had, hold on to your hat, nine, 9, orange tabby kitties.
There were in a large box squealing, mewling, tumbling, squishing each
other, each wanted to be top cat. I could have just watched them all day
long. They had to go to homes earlier than usual as a dog crashed through
the screen door of the porch where the kitties and mama were and mama was
killed defending her babies. Ms. Orange Marmalade and Mr. Pumpkin came home

Stormmee - 11 Feb 2008 23:29 GMT
TV and OEJ were the remaining kitten's from Violette's second litter.
Tiger was thrown away by someone and came to us for food.
Trudi, came to us as a half starved kitten, DH says I made her up from
wishing her, later by about six years we also found she had been abused by
being shot with Beebe's.
Stormmee was found under our bushes, as a tiny kitten of nine ounces, she
was about 3 weeks old, so as best we can figure she was born on the day
Violette was helped to the bridge, it was a November night where people died
in tornados in Indiana.
Chester, came to us from a shelter, he had been rescued by the shelter on
his last day at the pound, he is the only cat I ever picked out... or rather
I got from a shelter, he picked me, by letting me know he was exactly what
we needed in a bud for Stormmee, so she wouldn't die at the paws of the
other four cats who find her kittnish antics completely disturbing.

No, I was counting all the ones we've had over the last 16 years.
Six now: Ishtar, Chloe, Splodge, Marblecake, Ollie and Courtney.
Mingus, Zeke, Ishmael and Muriel died; Gunther got another home;
Velcro, Velocette and Busby vanished.
The ones that got lost went while we were living in a top-floor
city-centre tenement flat and the cats couldn't go out - whereas
we have not lost a single cat while living for the same length of
time with the same number of cats in a terrace house in a village
where they can come and go as they please. I'm not very impressed
with the argument that trying to keep cats indoors does anything
to protect them. If they learn to go outside they can learn to
find their way back; if they're kept indoors and never learn the
geography of their surroundings, any excursion to the outdoors is
likely to be one-way. And accidents will happen.

These are pretty bare bones locations. Huey was rescued at Simmons
Army Air Base by the men and women in Rob's unit. Tanada was rescued
from an ex-friend, Merlin was supposed to go into the shelter cages,
but never made it. Someone dumped Miss Calico Girl, Pine Cone, Huey,
and Sonya. I haven't included all the cats that have come to our door
and we found homes for, or the ones that people brought over for help
as I'm the neighborhood crazy cat lady.
I'd be interested in stories about how people got their owners

caliban's mother was a stray cat rescued from the streets of tallinn,
estonia. he was born at an estonian fosterer's, and then a finnish
fosterer fetched him over to helsinki. i contacted her soon after that,
and asked if she might have any tabby kittens. she sent me this picture
of 'leo' as he was called then, and how could i resist.

the breeder was my niece. she let her russian blue, kira, have two
litters before she was fixed. the second litter had to be placed as
pets, not breeding cats, and though i had my doubts about how nikki
would treat her, i took mir - then called cashmere or mere for short. as
it turned out, and after a lot of initial hissing, nikki accepted the
newcomer quite quickly and had even started playing with mir, but then
she died quickly and unexpectedly.

Wonky (Cats Protection) was rescued from an indoor feral colony, many of
which had FeLV (he escaped) and he had severe haematomas in his ears due
to ear mites, which deformed his ears as he shook his head so much and
made him deaf.
Merlin (Cats Protection) was a 6-week old grey fluffball whose mum
(pedigree Chinchilla) was dumped on the group with 7 unweaned tiny
kittens and mammary tumours meaning she couldn't feed them. The breeder
didn't want her anymore as she had escaped and found the local tomcat
once too often.
Bracken (Cats Protection) was 7 weeks old and came to the group with his
2 littermates and his mum. He is a male tortoiseshell and this is so
unusual that we decided to home him within the group to prevent
unscrupulous adopters selling him on, trying to breed him (he is sterile
due to his genetics) etc. As I was obviously lacking in cats they
offered him to me :-)
> Pet store:
1
Willow. In my first home 12 years ago I already had Cocoa who is not a
cuddly cat, and really wanted another cat I could actually be friends
with. This was before my involvement with Cats Protection. I approached
them wanting to adopt but they turned me down as my road was too busy.
So I went to a pet shop and got Willow as a small stripy kitten.
Cats Protection were correct - she was hit by a car resulting in a
broken leg when she was 6 months old. Fortunately she recovered and she
is still with me today, and I know more about looking after cats than I
did back then.
> From friend or relative :
1
Cocoa. In 1995 some friends said they were moving due to work and
couldn't take her with them, and would I like her? What they didn't say
until too late is that she was the grumpiest and most tetchy cat on the
face of the earth. And it turned out they had 5 other cats which ALL
moved with them! Anyway Cocoa (renamed from 'Compost') is fear-defensive
but nothing more, and we have learned to get on fine. She has mellowed
with age (now 15) but still demands respect and has a short fuse if it
is not received! She has a LOT of purrsonality.

When Lucky went to the RB, I called Pet Haven, a large local no kill
shelter and rescue organization. I was looking for a young adult cat
that was still in a home; perhaps being fostered. I wanted a cat with a
'known' personality.
Kenzie was about 3 years old, and her humans were desperately seeking a
good home for her. Their 7 year old son had developed severe asthma, and
they had been looking, with no success, for several months. They
wouldn't give her to the no kill shelter, insisting they wanted to know
where she went. But they gave them their phone number. And when I called
them, they gave Kenzie's humans my phone number.
They gave her to me. One of my very, very lucky days, certainly.

After I had Lucky for a year or so, I developed a severe case of kitten
fever. I saw an ad in the local newspaper for 'white kittens'.
I 'bought' Blizzard for $15. To my everlasting regret, I didn't take her
litter mate, an odd-eyed white kitten. She was very pretty, with one
blue, and one green eye. I have made many mistakes with my life; this
one of many big ones.

All three of the cats I had in recent years were essentially 'free to
good home'. Mandy had been born to a cat who didn't get neutered quite
soon enough and the family advertised for homes for all the kittens but
one - she and Mama were due at the vet, the family having learned how
hard it can be to find homes for kittens. Mandy was the last one left.
Betsy had been abandoned when her original owners moved out of the
province making no arrangements for her, and a friend who lived on the
same street told me about her and encouraged me to adopt her. And the
sole current cat, Sam, was roaming around a neighbourhood making a
general nuisance of himself when one of the residents sent a notice
around my workplace looking for a home for him. This was after I'd had
to have Mandy put down and I guess I was ready for another cat.

I used to work in the vet school, so I knew a number of vets at the
time. One of them suckered me into my first cat(RB) - he was a special
needs kitty - not quite right in the head from the day I got him. My
second cat was Tony, also given to me by a vet friend. She found him in
the middle of a four-way stop on the way to the airport. Once she
realized he flat, she stopped and picked him up. He was too bouncy and
energetic for her older animals, so she begged me to take him. He is
still energetic and full of it 13.5 years later. But he has been with me
through a lot of stuff and I wouldn't trade him for anything.

OK, I can usually figure out what was meant when I come across a typo,
but this one has me stumped. "Once she realized he flat"? I just can't
imagine what that was supposed to be! :)

Whoops, that is supposed to read that he wasn't flat (as in run over)
because he was hugging the road and has always had this ability to do a
flat cat routine. He moved just as she drove by prompting her to stop
immediately in the middle of the intersection and run to pick him up.

the runt of the litter aged 3 weeks as he was failing. (HRFL Tiger)
Robbie was deliberately adopted from a rescue group to keep HRFL

5 were rescues/fosters who never left. (Sir William (RB), Sam (MIA),
Pandora, Cleo and Miss Lily Whiskers)
2 direct rescues - Thomasina my grans cat and Daisy (RB).
1 from a pet shop - Polly (RB) - she was covered in fleas, 5 weeks old
and screaming "get me out of HERE!!" - so I did. :o)

One cat - "Cat Five" (her name is Five - she's our only cat, not the
fifth), DSH female tabby black/brown w/ green eyes. Adopted her from the
local animal control shelter (NOT a "no-kill"). Picked her up as a 3 year
old as the shelter was filling up with kittens. The shelter manager
couldn't even get his friends to adopt the shy girl and she was about at
the end of the holding period. She was surrendered as "Jasmine" with two
other cats by the family of her previous slave, a senior with Alzheimer's
that was going into a nursing home and couldn't care for herself, much less
her three cats. We took her home on March 24, 2008, which we celebrate as
Five's purrday. From that day on she became Cat Five, the network kitty :D

"Five" was an inspiration from the geek cartoon "User Friendly" in the
strip at http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20000222. But Five's
first appearance in the strip was a few days earlier as a Valentine's day
gift in the strip http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20000218.

Ours is a cat friendly neighborhood, most of the families here have cats and
there are regular visitor cats that we name; Thug and Intruder are two.
After this cat was injured he was scorned by the neighborhood and treated
badly as he was not wanted near the pets. We had three cats at the time;
dear Mr. Pumpkin (RB), Aggie Marble and Victor Velcreo. When I started
feeding this emaciated, troubled fellow, DH David would say "The fourth cat
is here." When we took this dear cat in it just seemed the thing to do to
name him Four.

That is atrocious. As if it's not bad enough for him to have this nasty
injury, but to be treated badly *because* of it? What's wrong with those
people?

There was a rational to the behavior; not a good one though. Four's injury
was very large, you may have seen the picture, originally it was longer and
wider. At one point and for months it was infected terribly, his head and
shoulder and part of his neck were swollen with the infection. He was a
ghastly sight, diseased, emaciated and wanting food. The vets cautioned
their clients to keep that cat away from the pets for fear of the pets
getting any kind of disease that Four might be carrying. He was, and still
is an unknown factor. We now know he is positive so in one respect the
advice was good. In another I think, again, that Four may have been a pet
and received a three year shot so has been protected from other things he
might have picked up but didn't.
We tried for a long time to trap him but he wouldn't be trapped. Very, very
wary cat. It was a total of three years between his injury and getting him
onto the porch.

Many years ago, when I had my RB d*g Snowball, there was a mother cat
and two feral kittens right outside our house at Edgewood and
Winthrop. Snowball helped us "herd" them up against the house and we
captured Edgewood, Winthrop and Ms. Mom.
After some veterinary attention, Edgewood and Ms. Mom went out of my
life to what I have good reason to believe were forever homes.
Winthrop became the store cat at Book World, where I worked at the
time. He seemed to enjoy his job and stayed until the store went
under, when he moved to Boston with one of the guys. He was fine when
I last heard about him.
> From friend or relative :
A bartender friend had an ex-boyfriend who had two kittens and wanted
to keep the mom and one, either one, kitten. She and I went over to
his place, with his permission, and captured a small black Kitten.
Feather was a short-hair but with a great dense coat. He was graceful
and light in his movements, thus his name. He was the mouse
population's God of Death for some years on Chapel St. in New Haven.
He's gone now and I miss him every day.
Some years later, my mom was quite ill. She was in a long, and quite
wonderful, period of remission when she told me that I would end up
with WooToo when she was gone. When she went, my brother Sid drove her
up from Maryland and she has lived here.
> > Breeder :
Micki and some friends at one time thought they would become wealthy
breeders of Himalayan cats. They did become breeders.
Maggie May is sixteen years old. She had a number of litters back in
the "let's get rich breeding Himmys" days and the kittens DID sell for
good prices to good homes. But Micki always worried more about the
homes than the prices and did not turn much of, if any, a profit.
Seven years ago, Maggie May was fixed. She still loves kittens and
everyone else. She helped raise our d*g Bear when he was a pup. All
that was before I lived with her mom but MM is a great pal to me now
and WooToo's bestest friend.
Sunrise is a beautiful red Persian, purchased from the same breeder
that produced Maggie May. She was a mother cat a couple of times and
her kittens were sensational. Now she is aging, but not old, diva.
> Your cat had kittens and you kept them:
Almost all of Maggie May's kittens were of the "let's keep him/her"
variety but Missy had to be kept because she hated, and hates, human
beings. We get enough affection from the other cats and respect
Missy's space. She gets along fine with the other cats and with Bear.
Winnie, the white knight, was Maggie May's most "let's keep him/her"
kitten from her last litter. So Micki kept him. He is a jolly fellow
and still loves and respects his mom.

> Your cat had kittens and you kept them:
2 - Fevs and Wuz. Sort of. Their mother showed up at our door, my father
didn't believe in spaying, neutering, keeping cats indoors, or regular
veterinary care and his word was law in the household (bleah), and mama
kitty had two litters before disappearing. Fevs and Wuz were the
survivors of a neighborhood gauntlet of dogs, cars, other cats, and the
psycho down the street with a raccoon trap and poisoned cat food.
They're currently neutered, spoiled, indoor-only, have a wonderful vet,
and live with my mom because neither of us wanted to put them through
moving again without really good cause. And Mayhem scares them.
> Other:
Growing up in a rural area, I took in several "dumped" kittens
(generally against my father's will), including Fevs' probable father.
None of them are in my care anymore though, and most are probably RB. :(
