We have some new neighbors - young, and with no telephone. So the wife
comes ove (a little too often) to see if she can use the phone. I am
at the point of showing her where the pay phone is...

I've got Buster in my lap, and Little Feet nearby, while watching
America's Funniest Pratfalls, er Videos.

At any rate, she came over tonight to use the phone. While she was
here, she was looking out the window.

Suddenly, her eyes get real big. She exclaims, "THAT ain't no cat!"

At which point I explain that we have raccoons that eat from the cat
bowl, as well as a possum and an armadillo.

She asks, "Are they dangerous?"

I tell her that the raccoons run away from people, but to be careful
anyway, because raccoons can carry rabies.

Well, the poor girl is now scared out of her mind, and is trying to
figure out how to get past the evil wild animals outside, to get back
to her apartment.

Again, I remind her that the raccoons are pretty much harmless and
will run away from her, but she hightails it back to her apartment
like a demon was after her.

Hmmmm, maybe the raccoons will keep her away for awhile - I should go
put more racoon food, er catfood out... (evil grin).

Hugs and Purrs,
Mark

Hoping to keep her from being scratched or bitten, my mother once
warned my sister never to approach or pet a squirrel.  Sound advice,
but the poor little thing became terrified of them and would worry
herself sick over a squirrel across the street.  Took her a while to
get over it.

I was warned about strange dogs (by my over-protective
mother).  Fortunately, my father was still alive at that
point, and qualified the stricture by teaching me how to
approach a strange animal, and how to judge whether it was
hostile or not.  (Consequently, I've never been afraid of
any animal, but approach them with caution, and offer
petting only if invited, and on their terms.)
