Licky goes to TED

bastXXXette@sonic.net - 05 Feb 2008 20:21 GMT The day I've been dreading for over 4 years came to pass this morning - when I would realize I needed to take Licky to the vet. I took him because he kept going into the litter box and just standing there (it's a covered box so I couldn't see him that well, but his head pokes out of the entrance). He did this about 5 times this morning in the space of about 20 minutes. I stood in the doorway to listen, and did not hear any peeing. Nor did I smell anything to indicate he was pooping. (And I doubt he'd have to poop 5 times.) So I called the vet and they said to bring him in immediately.
Getting him into the carrier was a challenge. Well, actually, the hard part was *catching* him - once I did that, I got him to go into it pretty easily. But Licky is very good at psyching me out, and knowing that I have something up my sleeve - I can't pull one over on him! So he got it right away that I needed to catch him, and ran under my bed. I lifted up the bed, and he scurried off. Finally I thought to close the door, which limited his options, at which time he started yowling in a horrified tone. The poor guy! He's such an anxiety-ridden creature.
Finally, I found him cowering in my closet, and managed to pull him out. From there it was relatively easy. Of course he howled all the way to the vet, which is one of the reasons I pick my vets by proximity. :) (This one is really good, though - I've only been a couple of times, and I've been *very* pleased with them.)
He didn't have much urine in his bladder, and the doctor didn't think he was constipated either, after palpating his intestines and then giving him a rectal exam. I now have medication for him - an antibiotic in case he has an infection, and an anti-spasm med, in case he's having narrowing of the urethra? (That med is called "krystspaz" or something like that. :))
If he seems better, then I'll need to bring him back for a urinalysis in about a week. If a few days go by and he doesn't seem any better, then he will have to go back right away because that might be more serious.
One thing that was really sweet was that when he was out on the examining table, he stuck his head into the crook of my arm and really burrowed in there. Aww... I didn't think he considered me any kind of comfort - usually he runs away from me at home when I try to touch him (except in very specific, and very limited situations). But he really seemed to calm down when I petted him and talked to him. Who knew?
He's home now, and not looking overly traumatized, considering. I thought he'd dive right under the bed the second we got in, but he actually sat in the middle of the room washing himself. I approached him with a kitty toy, and he ran off, but the truth is, he does that on a normal day, so who knows?

Meowmies are such wonderful comfort in such an emergency even if such a naturally shy cat cat like Licky *does* pretend you don't matter in normal circumstances! Lots of purrs coming over the pond that it's nothing serious. KittyFC sends her loudest ones ever and wants to know if she should perhaps teleport over to be with her beloved in his hour of need?

It really was very sweet. And even though he was obviously very rattled, he didn't use a single tooth or claw to express his distress! He's a good, sweet boy who even under stress doesn't get mean.

That would at least be lower in > protein... Absolutely not. She needs very soft food piled up in a heap on her plate. Minced chicken, rabbit, tuna, salmon. Her teefs are not good enough to eat dry food now and there is nothing to be done about it. Her organs, kidney, liver, heart are too old to stand up to an anaesthetic to put them right now, so says the vet who is amazed that she survived a bad start and is still going reasonably well at aged nearly 22. It's her bad attitude that does it ;-)

Licky, aka Licorice, is my cat, a male, and is going on 5 years old. It's a February-December romance. :)

Stormmee - 06 Feb 2008 12:34 GMT sounds rather like my grandmother, but I am sure KFC is more pleasant, Lee
> > > <bastXXXette@sonic.net> wrote in message > > [quoted text clipped - 21 lines] > > Tweed Christina Websell - 06 Feb 2008 17:53 GMT LOL! I wouldn't bet on it ;-) She's always been grumpy even when she was younger and in perfect health, although she does have her "want to cuddle my meowmie and perch on her chest" moments. She is only the second cat I ever had. The first was an ancient intact tom found under the hedge in our garden when I was a child, almost dead of malnutrition. He was grumpy and slashy too, unable to be housetrained, he used to poo in my shoes. It wasn't until Boyfriend came along that I realised how gentle and wonderful cats can be. He's an ambassador for cats as judging from my first two experiences I doubt I would have wanted another one by choice.

Mischief - 06 Feb 2008 03:26 GMT interesting..........
We would have tried to keep Licky for a few hours and syringe fed him some water. Then in a few hours check to see if he has a full bladder.
Also I'm surprised they didn't think to take x-rays. You can then see if he has a lot of poop in the colon, how full the bladder is, or to check for stones.
But a conservative approach works too. Every vet is different
Hope that he gets better. Keep us posted....

> Do you suppose he's objecting to a new kitten in his domain? I was thinking that the stress of having a kitten in the house might have aggravated whatever his underlying problem is. But no, I think he hissed at me because he was remembering my chasing him all over the house yesterday morning and taking him to the Evil Place.
He does seem to be mostly over it today. And this morning, he took his medicine (in Pill Pockets, a miracle product)!
