bastXXXette@sonic.net - 04 Feb 2008 02:33 GMT There's this pet food store near my house where I buy cat food, litter, etc. I always go on Sundays because a local feral-rescue group has an adoption in front of the store and I like to visit the kitties.
Today I went and they were just breaking down (it was late in the afternoon and time to pack up), but a few cats were still in their cages. I stuck my finger in one and the kitty rubbed his head all over my finger. I asked the volunteers if I could take him out and hold him, and they said yes.
The cat immediately shoved his head under my chin, started purring, and wouldn't budge, except to touch noses with me and rub his head all over my face. He was a little darling. The next thing I knew, I was offering to foster him!!
At first, the volunteers said they had someone. Then they said that they actually hadn't asked the guy (ie, the fosterer) yet, so if I wanted to, I could take him tonight. They know I already have 3 cats at home, because I visit them almost every week and talk to them all the time. They said that if it turns out to be too much, they do have other fosterers who could take him. And of course, he could get adopted.
He is now under my desk and won't come out. I have the office door closed so my 3 vultures can't come near him, but either he smells them, or else he's just nervous about being in a new place. I hope he relaxes soon. I tried to play with him but he's still too nervous, so I'm leaving him alone. He's about 8-9 months old, so still a baby. But I put a bit of catnip down to see if I could entice him out.
Am I insane or what? I'm already overwhelmed keeping up with 3!!
He is awfully cute, though. :)

And now for a complete change of subject, totally off topic. My sister and brother-in-law have a Golden Retriever. They live in a small town and are good friends with the local animal control officer, who also runs the local shelter. They got a call from her, asking if they'd foster a Golden Retriever for a couple of weeks. A woman wanted to claim him, and, while she couldn't prove it, she knew this woman was guilty of animal abuse. She wanted to be able to tell the woman the dog was not available. My sister made it perfectly clear that they would keep the dog for two weeks, but not one minute more. That was five years ago. I don't think I need to finish the story. ;-)

I don't think I fit that, after all Boyfriend was an absolute definite for the cat's home once I had tamed him a bit. That was 5 years ago now.. Good luck with fostering him, Joyce ;-)

He's mostly white, with a couple of tiny patches of black on his head and back. Actually, he's not the prettiest cat in the world. But he was *so sweet* when I was holding him this afternoon! He's small, about 9 months old, but looks younger to me. The feral group says he was born in May '07, though.
I had to do some cooking (not involving the world-famous pork chop), so I left him alone for about an hour. Came back in and now he's in his cat carrier, shoved up against the back, furthest from the door. He's seriously nervous, poor baby. I'm just going to let him do his thing until he decides he's comfortable coming over to me. But if he doesn't warm up in a day or two, I'll call the volunteer to see what the issue is. She said he was very affectionate, so maybe he really is creeped out to be in a houseful of cats, even though he can't see them and they can't get near him.
His name is Everett, by the way. Apparently he got named that because he's always trying to climb people, even when they're standing, so that reminded someone of Everest, which morphed into Everett.
Go ahead and tease me all you like - my landlord would have me out on my ear if he know I had 4 cats in here!! He doesn't even know I have 3. So I have to give Everett back. I really hope he gets adopted soon. He's really a nice cat.

Once you start thinking of various names which you think are a better fit, that's when he becomes your cat. I've had some recent experience with that phenomena, as I had Princess and Furby named before I even got them home.

This Everett is a goofball, a baby, and not especially dignified, although he does prance around like he owns the place, which I guess has its own brand of dignity. Nothing like the entitlement attitude of a young male feline. :)

bastXXXette@sonic.net - 04 Feb 2008 08:47 GMT Every time I come into the office, Everett has found a new hiding place. First time, it was deep under my desk, against the back wall, behind a bunch of cables. I didn't like that - there's a whole lot of electricity back there - so I pulled him out. I also hoped he would relax and let me hold him. He did let me hold him, but didn't seem to relax much, and after I put him down, I felt a small wet spot on my t-shirt which I believe is cat pee. Poor kitty! :(
The second time I came in, he was scrunched up in the back of his carrier, as I posted before.
The third time, I couldn't find him at all. He wasn't in the carrier. Wasn't under the desk. Wasn't in any of the places that Licky likes to hide. I looked all over. And then suddenly, I saw, among the books on my bookshelf, a stripey tail. He was tucked away on top of some books!
That was 45 minutes ago, and I've been sitting here, reading email and playing Sudoku, and he hasn't moved an inch. He also hasn't made a sound. I'm actually a little concerned - this doesn't sound at all how he was described by the volunteers. They said he was active and playful, affectionate (which I saw this afternoon), and fine being around other cats. I'm thinking he feels scared because the scents of my other cats are all around. What else could it be? Unless he's gotten sick? I might call the rescue org tomorrow, if he doesn't seem any more outgoing by the morning.
Joyce
PS - I can't adopt him. I can't I can't I can't I can't I can't I can't I can't I can't I can't I can't...

And - do you know how long he was used to have contact to the rescue people before he was so close with them? He needs more time and a couple of nights to explore the premises. Let the other cats meet him, he needs to see what smells like cat.<g>
Everett is a wonderful name. He choose you. I strongly believe that. And - if your landlord doesn`t know about your three ones, there is not much difference if he doesn`t know about your 4 ones.<g> Makes sense to me.

bastXXXette@sonic.net - 05 Feb 2008 00:27 GMT > Please don't call the rescue org tomorrow. He's terrified just yet. Give > him a couple of weeks to relax, at least. Even if I did call them, it would just be to discuss what's happening. I wasn't implying I would be calling them to give him back. He's not bothering me hiding under desks and so on. I'm just concerned about him.
The rescue volunteers told me he was active and playful, and nobody said I should expect him to act scared and hide a lot at first. So I just want compare what's happening with him now to how he's acted in other foster homes, that's all. If they say he's done that before, then I won't worry about it, I'll just give him time to relax, and gently coax him out of his hiding spot with low-pressure enticements. But if they say he's never acted like that before and that he's usually a very social cat, this could indicate something's wrong. So I want to make sure.

They need it to get over the trauma of a new place and new smells and new sounds. Then we leave the door open and let them come to us when they are ready.

Ah, it will all depend on whether any potential adopters sent along to see him are good enough, Suz. It might be that their home is too small or dangerous for cats, they are out at work too long to give him the attention he needs, or they just look, well, maybe, just not quite right for this lovely boy. <g> It's a fact that once I had Boyfie for a while no other home for him would have been good enough for him but mine. That's what often happens despite best intentions to rehome them. They creep into your heart without your permission.

bastXXXette@sonic.net - 04 Feb 2008 18:59 GMT >> He is awfully cute, though. :)
> Pictures? Unfortunately, no, because I don't have a camera. He's a small 9-month old (looks more like 6 months to me), and is mostly white, with small patches of black in a few places, and a striped tail. That always cracks me up, like at the factory, they had run out of tails to match a mostly- white cat, and had to just stick on a striped one. :)
He has runny eyes, and might have herpes. I already know that my non- herpes cats are immune, since they've been living with Roxy for years, so that's no problem.
I just wonder where that sweet, affection-hog kitty went? I'm going to call the rescue folks today. He seemed no different this morning - I found him crouched in yet another hiding place, as far back as he could get. He did eat, though, and he used the litter box, so he's probably just scared, not sick.

When Cleo arrived, she was in shell shock and sat under my desk in her box for 3 weeks solid.
He's ex-feral, right? If he's been tamed, this behaviour is completely normal and he he needs time to readjust. Sit there quietly and read to him. Also, if you have a feather wand toy, try and tempt him to play with it. Whatever you do, don't force yourself on him. Also, get yourself some really yummy gooshy food, smear it on your fingers and encourgae him to lick it off. Then he'll learn your fingers are nice things.
Give him time. He's worried, stressed and unsure of himself and is behaving the only way he knows how - hiding and keeping small and hunkered down so that the big bad monster doesn't eat him.

Oh, yes - that's what I did with Licky (and his brother - I had them both as fosters when they were 3-4 months old). Except I used meat baby food - boy did they love it! Licky especially loved to lick it off my fingers. (But that's not how he got his name! In case there's anyone who doesn't already know this, it's short for "Licorice".)
I'll try a feather toy, too. I was moving a pencil back and forth really fast near him, and very few cats seem able to resist that, but he didn't react at all.
> Give him time. He's worried, stressed and unsure of himself and is > behaving the only way he knows how - hiding and keeping small and > hunkered down so that the big bad monster doesn't eat him. Yeah, I can see that he is. But I'm surprised the rescue people didn't tell me this. They said I should expect him to be affectionate, active and playful. They also said he's been fostered in a couple of different places, and that he's used to other cats. Nothing about him needing some time to get used to a new environment, or spending hours crouched in the exact same position. So that's why I'm concerned. I just wasn't expecting this, based on what they told me. It could mean that my house isn't a good foster home for him.
Thanks, Joyce

Granby - 04 Feb 2008 21:36 GMT NOOOOO I am sure it doesn't mean you home isn't right for fostering. Read what you wrote, "They also said he's been fostered in a couple of different places," This means that counting the shelter, this would be his FOURTH home. Give the poor little guy a break. Talk to him, lay on the floor near him, love him and if it is meant to be it will but if he goes back that will mean a fifth move. This would mess up a foster child in a heartbeat. You have LOVE, now have PATIENCE!

Get him used to your presence. That many homes in under a year has to be unsettleing for a kitten. Suz&Spicey
Stormmee - 04 Feb 2008 21:53 GMT it could also be that he really wants to stay and is scared he will do something wrong, Lee

Cats generally do not worry whether they are doing something wrong! :) That's a dog's job. However, I do believe he is simply freaked out to be in a new place, with lots of cat smells around. I hope he'll come around soon, but I'll be spending more time with him tonight.

Stormmee - 04 Feb 2008 23:12 GMT after they are comfortable they don't give a rat's rip what you think, but I can tell you that when they have been shuttled from place to place, and if their mother has warned them about humans, I think it is a possibility, Trudi to this day comes and checks on me and puts on cute kitty ness if she hears me be loud, as if to say, please don't be mad at me, see I am cute, Lee

He should have stayed at the shelter apparently he was happy there. We really shouldn't pressure into something. But, try and be fair to the kitty. Maybe he bonded with someone there at the shelter. If you want him, the be patient and try to bond with him, if not then let him go back where he was happy. They will love you if you let them.

They will love you if you let them. He wasn't in a shelter. He was rescued by a local, grass-roots feral-cat rescue group. They maintain feral colonies, and if they rescue kittens of a young enough age, they put them into foster care for socializing and eventually adoption.
This kitten has been in foster care for a while, I think. I'm not sure when he was rescued, though. Apparently the foster home he was in wasn't ideal for him, and the volunteers at the org. were going to place him elsewhere. That's where I came in - I just happened to be cuddling him and talking to them, and the next thing I knew, I said I would be happy to foster him. :)
So if I were to give him back to the organization, it would be because he was extremely unhappy in my home for some reason. And he'd go to another fosterer, not to a shelter. I would not do this lightly, however!

Granby - 05 Feb 2008 00:20 GMT Now you are talking girl. You are thinking about the kitty and not so nervous about what you think. You will be ok, be patient with yourself too.

I told her the boys are adjusting to me but very slowly. She said it could take as long as the amount of time they were in the shelter (6 months). What you describe is how they were. They are improving since now they only go half way as far into each corner :) Your little guy err.. I mean the foster doesn't even have his brother with him like mine do.

Joyce has the right idea. In technical fields, prospective employers are big on certifications (presumably to demonstrate a candidate's mastery of a particular technical skill). Joyce can now include CCP after her name on her correspondence/resume, being that she's officially a Crazy Cat Person. I'll never tell that she's not, to my knowledge, a Cisco Certified Professional.
