I'm asking on behalf of my Pooh ("Pooh-Be-Pooh-Bear"). She's going to be 15
in June. She's got arthritis, which for the most part doesn't bother her
much... but every now and then, she'll go for a jump onto my bed and she
doesn't make it. I'm going to call TED and get an appoint next week. My
question is... who's babies are on meds for arthritis or other aches and
pains related to their senior years, and how do they do on it??? (I've
heard steroids is an option).

Scooter Dog took liquid glucosamine for hip problems. Bought it on line and
it did wonders for her. Got me started taking the "Move Free" stuff for
people and my joints really like it.

My Cocoa is 15 and has arthritis in the lower spine and hips - I know
when it's bad as she gets dandruffy in that area, as she can't bend
round to groom herself. She looks stiff going upstairs and can't jump
very well.
She has acupuncture treatment from a vet friend who is trained in
veterinary acupuncture and it really seems to help her - the first time
she had it, I saw her leap up onto a counter top the next day, which is
normally way out of her reach! So she has a few sessions every winter
when she seems to be getting awkward. I prefer to avoid medication if at
all possible when it's likely to be a long-term thing. I'm interested in
Granby's use of glucosamine though, I wonder what would be a suitable
amount for use in a cat?

At the moment don't remember the exact dosage but your vet could tell you.
Scootz started out with pills and that got to be a rounder so I found the
liquid form. Will tray and see what I can find out for you.

Thanks Granby, much appreciated. I will have a word with the vet and see
what they might recommend.

Pandora (cat) is on metacam for her arthritis. It seems to work very
well for her.

One of my cats is going on 14 and probably has arthritis bu she still
tears
around sometimes and has no problem at all jumping up on stuff, like
beds
and sofas. The others are younger. There is a step-contraption I see
not
only advertised but also right there in the same lower-cost bargain
stores
I frequent (where I see that bad pet food still for sale) for about
$10-15 like a little
step-stair for pets to go up on beds and not have to jump. A
possibility?

A while back Little Bit had suddenly had trouble moving her back legs
(a problem TED never could find an answer for). She's pretty much
recovered now, but for a while I had a home made ramp fashioned out of
dresser drawers for her to use to get up on the bed. Spotty and Sammy
used it, but LB never used it, just sat on the floor and meowed at me
when she wanted on the bed.

I haven't got a diagnosis for Stinky (just turned 17), but he is definitely
stiffer than he used to be. He still frequently uncorks a mighty leap from
the kitchen counter to the table. He is due for his regular checkup soon,
so we shall see. He doesn't seem to *want* to slow down-- he's still a
pretty active cat-- but I can see differences.

I thought of this thread last night. I take Glucosamine Sulphate tablets for
arthritis, they come in small plastic containers. When I went to bed last
night Snoopy was batting one of the empty containers all round the bedroom
floor.
It gives me so much pleasure to watch an almost 18 year old cat playing like
a kitten. :-)

Isis played until a day or so before she crossed the Bridge okay she
wasn't almost 18 (16 and 3 months 2 days) but it was great to watch-
this being the cat who caught and bit her own tail!

Cali takes Glucosamine powder for her hips, makes a huge difference.

Do you get this powder online or from the vet. My sons dog is beginning to
need it.

We get it from the vet, it's called UBAVET Gold Glucosamine HCL. Although
I've seen similar products online.

Nanki Poo has to have a shot every two to four months otherwise he
acts as though he has a furball - but he hasn't.
