I haven't been able to come here for a while. My bust buddy Randy's
mother is fighting a vicious cancer; and damn the evil thing, it's
threatening to win.
I've known the family form the start of high school. Back then they were
dirt-poor, Joycie living with her three sons in a single room, claptrap
trucker's motel right on the edge of our hick town, her scum husband
having run off on her for a younger woman. He got out of paying support
and they lived off welfare, and Joycie raised the boys with a strict
work and study ethic. It paid off, as one is an executive with BankOne
and the other is one of those who drafted the recent Medicare
legislation which took effect in the US. Joycie learned to do office
work, got off welfare, and went to work for a pet shop and cleaned the
laundromat in front of her apartment in exchange for a substantial rent
cut.
This woman, even at her poorest, had a bed and hot meal for any of her
kids' friends who were either too drunk to drive or had to run away from
getting beat on by a drunk parent. A tiny woman, she was full of the
devil and was as protective of her boys as a mama bear with cubs. Now,
she even tinier than ever. This filthy cancer is eating her from the
inside out. It has no exact origin but has just decided to take a long
and nasty cruise through her lymphatic system. The chemo's screwed he
bad. She was taken to the hospital last Tuesday, and they found she has
literally a zero white cell count. They've been pumping her full of
antibiotics and fluids and while she is now more mentally coherent, her
body is still a mess and getting worse.
Louie and I have been going at night to do the laundromat so the boys
can get a break and visit with their mama. By the boys I mean Randy and
the bank guy Dale.
Both live out of state. The one boy who is local has not visited, nor
has his wife, nor have either allowed the grandkids to come. One of my
friends has offered to stand in Joycie's place at a healing service to
be anointed in the Pentecostal Christian tradition. But I know from
reading everyone's postings that a purr can make miracles: there have
been healings, jobs, pets and humans reunited. Please send a few for
Joycie and her boys, all three of them. They all need some strength,
each in their own way.
Blessed be,
Baha

I've put my three cats on the case, and am purring for Joycie on the inside,
myself. Why do the best people who have to struggle all their lives get
hit over the head with terrible illnesses while people who think up new,
stupid survival shows escape them?

We are sending some very specific for Randy and his family healing purrs.
Sometimes healing takes its own form. And for angels to comfort them and to
hold them close.
An extra prayer for the human angels that are there for them to have the
strength they need in this very difficult time.

Is it just me, or does it seem like all the crooks of the world are fat and
happy and live luxury and health. While Mother Theresa endures arthritis and
dies an old age of aches and pains.
I'm really not very good at purring for others, but I can put her name on
the purr roll at the temple (if you email me, off list, and tell me her full
name).
And can come out some time to help clean laundromat. And a LDS style "health
blessing" if she desires.

Many thanks to each and every one of you who've come forward with such
support for my friends. It's working! Joycie came out of the hospital
Saturday night. She's still not quite with it, but she's eating and
determined to toughen up. Even in her condition, she went a did a little in
the laundromat, despite Randy's protests and me and Louie offering to help.
She was quite insistent. She's bored out of her mind holed up in the
apartment. Maybe it's good for her, therapeutic. Even a little of the
lightest work will strengthen both body and morale, and Joycie doesn't like
to slack.
She is indeed stronger; I was told that a week ago, she walked like she was
bombed out of her mind, all weavy and rubbery, and didn't have three words
she could put together coherently. Now she is only drowsy from some
high-octane painkillers she has to take. She can actually walk straight,
without the walker, although some PT is strongly in order because she'd been
laid up for a few months and her muscles were starting to lose it. Her hair
is starting to come back, even with the chemo, but most of all her mentality
is coming back. She has a great pride in her mind and proves that one does
not need college education to have a great deal of knowledge.
They still don't know if the nasty thing will be beaten or go into
remission. At least the source was determined--lung and breast--although,
oddly, there are no tumors in either spot. And how's this for a kicker:
Joycie never smoked in her life, and the doctors are saying it must be
coming from the lungs! Makes no sense.
Thanks once again, for pulling for my friends. Keep the good purrs coming,
please! Maybe she'll lick this cancer yet.
Blessed be,
Baha

Any chance it is the type of lung cancer caused by asbestos? There is a
good possibility she has been exposed to it. It killed my Sill's sister.

It is entirely possible, although rare, to have lung cancer without having
had any of the normal risk factors like exposure to smoke, asbestos, etc.
It's a nasty disease. Purrs for the lady.
