At least, that seems to be my function, lately. =o) Don't laugh too
hard, those of you living in snowy climates--for us, the California
weather has been very gray, wet, and wintery all week. I go around
dressed in multiple layers, make multiple cups of tea and work at my
computer with an afghan over my lap. Every time I sit in the comfy
chair to watch TV, the girls are all over me and complain mightily
whenever I have to get up. =o) Being a heated chair for my cats is of
course in addition to my normal slave duties of feeding, adoration and
ear scritches.

How do all of your cats cope with the cold?

Well, since I don't live too far from you, I know exactly the weather
you're talking about! I think it hit freezing temps last night in the
East Bay (east of San Francisco Bay).

Now that I've turned on the heat, my cats seem not to have much use for
me. I might be able to generate some heat of my own, but I can't hold
a candle to the baseboard. They lie draped over the back of the couch,
soaking up waves from the heater.

I have separate heaters for each room (ie, no central heating), so when
I go to bed, I turn off all the other ones, and heat only the bedroom.
I keep my bedroom door open about 5 inches (just wide enough for cats
to come and go), with a door-stopper to keep the door from opening any
wider. This keeps the bedroom pretty warm. When I first go to bed, the
cats are still draped over the back of the living room couch, but by the
time my eyes start drooping over my book and I reach for the bedside
lamp, there are at least 2 curled up on the bed.

In fact, it's usually been Roxy and Licky on my bed. For some reason,
Smudge hasn't been sleeping on my bed lately. I'll get up in the morning
and find her curled up on the livingroom couch in the chilly room, by
herself. What's up with that? So last night, I made a point of bringing
her into the bedroom. She got under the covers right away, and we all
settled down to go to sleep. But then I had to, um, release a bit of
gas. She came barrelling out of there immediately! :) (She did sleep on
the bed, though.)

I'm not laughing.  I'm just north of Sacramento, and we think were freezing.
Most of the rest of the world would likely think its a nice day to go out
for a walk.

Molly has been staying in.  She had just gone out the other day when we had
the freak hailstorm.  She was not amused.  Jake is in the bedroom watching
TV with Charlie.

We seem particularly useful in keeping their toes warm.

Oh, I didn't realize you were so far north. For some reason I thought
you lived somewhere near Bakersfield! I'm going to have to revise the
physical placement I get in my mind when I see your posts, from now
on. :)

It did feel like it was hitting freezing temps in my area, and I'm near
the Bay (so, therefore, milder temperatures than Sacramento area). Last
night it was raining, but the rain hitting my window sounded suspiciously
icy.

mostly sleep on me.  (And complain bitterly if I move out
from under them.)

When we got our first snow, everybody came out to look and prance around
in it. This was when the air temperature was just below freezing.

Now that we're a couple months into snow season and the temps drop down
below zero, with wind chill in the 20-30 below range, most of them don't
go out at all. Ranger continues to hang on to his "Might Snow Cat" title
by always going out when offered a chance. He might only stay out 2 or 3
minutes, but he does go out. Harri usually goes out as well, and sometimes
even stays out longer than Ranger does.

Cleo curls up in a protected corner of the bedroom close to the warm-air
vent in the wall.

Amelia sleeps in the bathroom, behind the bathroom door, curled up on top
of the heater vent.

Sammy and Tabitha usually chase each other, Ranger, and Harri around to
generate body heat, then nap on top of fleece blankets in the living room.

I'm a heated, padded, food and pettins dispenser. :)

Piles of cats all around. And the top of the fish tank is very popular,
it gets warm with the bright lights.

We've had another uncommonly warm winter here, but at the moment,
there's actually a little snow on the ground and temps just below
freezing. They're predicitng a snow storm today, and then it should get
warmer during the weekend, so looking forward to all that slush (NOT).

The cats don't seem to mind cold weather. I don't see them looking for
especially warm places to nap. Caliban burrows under the cover on my
chair for his day-time nap. but he does that in the middle of summer, as
well. Mir naps under the blankie on my bed, but she does that in summer,
too.

The strange thing is, I have the heat turned off in my bedroom, because
I don't like having it too warm (it's too well insulated, and the
distant-heating pipes running along the wall keep it warm enough without
having the radiator on, as well), yet still, the cats sleep with me
there, though it's probably warmer in the living room.

Doesn't sound strange at all to me. I live in a small one bedroom
apartment, and the heating/air conditioner unit is in the living room.
Everybody here seems to congregate in which ever room I'm in - well
everyone except the birds ;-) About the only difference the
temperature seems to make is in the number who show up on the bed, the
colder it is the more cats. Spotty is usually the last to join the
crew on the bed, her favorite spots are the cat tree or the kitty
cube.
