More Nanki-Poo worries

Yoj - 20 Nov 2004 19:27 GMT I'm taking Nanki back to the vet in a couple of hours. He does a lot of purring and snuggling, but he's still doing a lot of sneezing. Okay, it's only been two days since he saw TED, but what really worries me is that he hasn't eaten anything in 24 hours, he didn't drink his milk yesterday evening, and he has only used the litter box once since we got home from seeing TED. Since she gave him an infusion, she expected him to use the litter box quite a bit. He has water, but I don't think he's touched it.

Purrs, prayers and crossed fingers and paws will be much appreciated.
I had to take Nanki-Poo back to the doctor. He hadn't eaten anything for at least 24 hours, and I don't think he was drinking either. He had another infusion and she took some blood to send out for testing. She thinks he may have one of the nasty cat viruses. She says cats that are properly cared for can live several years with them, but it would probably mean keeping him shut up so Lindy can't catch it. She said it was just a possibility, so I shouldn't get too depressed yet.
He doesn't seem to be feeling too bad. He snuggles and purrs, and he actually jumped up onto the high shelf in the closet. As you know, there's stuff on that shelf, so he had to be able to jump really high.
He's also very stubborn. She tried a different kind of food on him. First she warmed it up in the microwave, and then she teased him with it. He seemed definitely interested, but when she finally let him get at it, he wouldn't eat. She also gave me an appetite stimulant to give him. It's in pill form. She had me try giving him one, and he spit it out. She got a special pill-giving gizmo and used it. He immediately began drooling like crazy, and a few minutes later when I wiped off the drool, part of the pill was there. The fact that he's so feisty is a good sign, but it would be a lot better if he'd be more cooperative about eating and taking pills.
Christine Burel - 21 Nov 2004 01:44 GMT Hi Joy, Is the bloodwork testing for kidney and liver functions too? Hope so -- wondering if he might be feeling nauseated if maybe some of these values are off. Also I'd make sure his teeth and gums are good 'cause a sore tooth can affect their eating, too. In any case, you both are having full purr power from us. hugs, Christine

She just tested for FIV, FIP and FIL today. She said if those are negative she'll do the other tests. The concern was cost. I've already spent several hundred dollars in vet bills, and I've only had him 9 days. She did check his teeth and gums, and said they looked okay.
Thanks for the purrs and hugs.

Christine Burel - 21 Nov 2004 14:57 GMT Just in case you don't know -- FIV kitties can live for a long time with a good quality of life if cared for properly -- if you remember Pirate, he was FIV+ and is currently living the high life in his forever home. Yoj - 21 Nov 2004 23:46 GMT Yes, the vet said that too. However, I'm concerned about his quality of life if I have to keep him shut in one room to keep him from infecting Lindy. I guess I shouldn't worry about that until I get the results of the tests, but I've always been one to anticipate.

He can't smell, so doesn't eat. Grant once had the sneezies for 4 days! He was on Baytril and it just took him a while to shake it. Let us know what TED says.

I guess I should look for a humidifier. The doctor did mention that moisture in the air would help. She suggested putting him in the bathroom after I take a shower. I prefer the tub, and the bathroom with the shower is tiny, so I'd hate to shut him up in there anyway. I've already spent enough on him (another $190 today - see my response to Christine) that the cost of a humidifier won't make much difference.

Hans Schr?der - 20 Nov 2004 22:03 GMT > He has water, but I don't think he's > touched it. All right, use my trick: Distribute several water bowls around the house where he isn't used to find water bowls. Why?
From the beginning cats were desert animals, so it was important for theyir survival to know where water was to be found. Therefor, all modern cats will instictly examine all new sources of water to find out if it is worth drinking.
This will, eventually, make a cat that doesn't want to drink from his ordinary water bowl, drink from the *new* water bowls.
Give it a try, and see how he reacts

One problem is, it's very hard to tell if he has drunk any water. The milk is easy, because there's only a little bit, but water is trickier. Thanks for the suggestion.

Sometimes you just have to force-feed them. I once nursed a cat through a case of feline tracheo-rhinitis by forcing fluids an eyedropper at a time. You have to be careful to avoid aspiration.

We had one baby (Internet), who when we brought him home from the shelter could *not* stop sneezing. We tried him on I think three different meds, but nothing worked. We finally put him in the bathroom to "steam" him, and occasionally stuck some Vick's Vap-o-Rub under his nose (not something he was happy with, mind you), and it finally did the trick.

Sitting on the lid with the shower running hot into the tub and the door closed till the water ran down the walls from the steam. At least with a kitten you can put it in a bed on the bathroom floor. Leave him for a while with it steamed up good.

Peppermint oil is good for congestion and doesn't hurt their sinuses. Also, you could try giving him some echinacea drops - that'll help his immune system.
Glad you got a humidifier - running all that shower water for the steam sounded expensive!
I had to shut Roxy in the bathroom with a humidifier when she was a kitten, when she had a really bad URI. She also couldn't smell her food and wouldn't eat it.

My mum used to do this for us children when we couldn't breathe. It worked. It seemed to free up our chests and blocked noses. Nanki won't eat his food because he can't smell it. Cats never eat if their noses are blocked and they can't smell.
