I collected Fungus Ferret this morning. :o)

He was neutered, microchipped and vaccinated yesterday and came
through surgery very successfully and the RSPCA Instector came over
last night so that I could fill out the adoption paperwork.

Don't get me started on the Inspectors attitude to my *fat collie*
(quote: "your dog is rather fond of her grub I'd guess - have you
thought about putting her on a diet?" - my reply, "yes it's being
supervised by the vet that put *you* in touch with *me* in the first
place to adopt one of *your* animals that *you* were going to PTS" ),
my *thin* elderly ginger cat (quote "This chap seems a bit thin, does
he have health issues?" - my reply, "yes, he's on Fortekor for kidney
disease and being monitored by a feline specialist vet - you know, the
one who consults for Bristol vet school and he's monitored on a
monthly basis")  and  the fact that I have *so many* animals (9) -
(quote: "how can I afford them?" - umm.... that would be because I
work for a living and don't have human kids and don't drink or
smoke.....)

So anyway, I met Fungus this morning at the vets. Fungus is a cream
ferret with black eyes and black guard hairs - he looks like he's been
stained with nicotine!! Photos soon, I promise!

Anyway... so that I could introduce Fungus to Barney and Gertie
successfully, I put him in a cat carrier and placed it next to Gertie
and Barney in their cat carrier whilst I scrubbed out their hutch with
enzyme cleaner and soap and water and replaced all the bedding with
clean stuff.

Then I gave them all a bath so that everyone smelled the same and put
them all in a large box filled with towels so that they could dry off
and I could supervise carefully....

After play-time (escaping from the box and running around my lounge
for an hour) I put them back in their cage. Everyone is asleep in a
ferrety heap in their bedding and you'd think the 3 of them had been
together for ever. There was a bit of squabbling as Fungus tried to
drag both Gertie and Barney around by their scruff initally, but it
was soon quickly resolved and then they started to play. :o)

Fungus is very thin and needs to put on some serious weight, but as a
whole he is friendly, affable and he's going to be a handsome boy when
he fills out and his coat improves.

So thanks for the purrs.....ferret math has struck again!

A warm welcome to Fungus.

By this point I think anyone else would have told him to go forth and
multiply but I suppose he would have taken Fungus with him! Especially
the last question...It ought to be obvious from the answers to the
first two questions that you are a responsible person and well able to
pay vet bills!

I often wonder if we applied ffor a cat from the RSPCA whether we'd be
told we weren't fit to keep cats, the place is a bit small (But has
very high ceilings so the cats can utilise "up" as well), not always
as you know spotlessly tidy but it gives the cats something to climb
and although we might not look perfect on paper, I have two sleek
healthy cats currently having a mid afternoon snooze after a strenuous
fether onna stick session

My house was respectively neat until his Willow cat moved in.  Every morning
I get up and she has emptied the book case, cleaned off the desk and pulled
all of the dirty laundry out of the baskets. EVERY DAY.  If she doesn't stop
soon, she will be spending the nights in the big dog cage.  I know it is her
because the other two are always on the bed at night.

I adopted Smokey (RB) from the RSPCA, their idea of a homecheck then was a
phone call a couple of months later asking how things were going.

Things have changed my step niece's partner who does home visits for a
dog rescue says the RSPCA have this rigid list  and if all boxes are
not properly ticked- no adoption, She says she'd never work for them
because she wouldn't be allowed to use her experience and instincts. I
rememebr when she was telling me, she cited a case where a retired
couple fell in love with a 7 year old large dog and the dog took to
them immediately. However under RSPCA rules their flat would have been
just a bit too small for a large dog. She was allowed when
recommending the dog be placed to say, the couple had previously kept
large dogs in the place, were counted as excellent owners of their
previous dogs by their vet, were well prepared to take the dog for
regular long walks and perhaps most importantly they and the dog had
bonded

But as she says under the checklist system the dog would have been
returned to shelter and probably PTS

I'd guess that according to the self righteous experts, many of us here are
unfit to be slaves to any species.

But why should I care what another mere human thinks.  (Yes its a hot button
issue for me and I really try not to get started)  My masters seem quite
satisfied with their domain.

I really start to burn at the notion that only wealthy, childless homeowners
should be allowed the comfort of pets.

Such people would probably not be used to the fact that pets make
messes!

It's an.....*ahem*.......an *experience*.

Think of bathing cats who love water, on acid, without the claws...

They're very wriggly!!!

Now that needed a FFW (ferret fever warning)

I've just checked everyone again, and everyone is crashed out in a
blissful ferrety heap of paws and snoring noseys. :o)

I think that Gert and Barney have taken to Fungus. :o)

Well, you didn't get the original Fungus, but likely you save *two*
ferrets from being PTS. That's a major victory against the RSPCA!

A couple of very, very lucky ferrets; they owe you their lives.

I'm glad he's home now, and getting along with your other ferrets.

I'm so glad that Fungus has settled in well :)

I can't get over what an arrogant prat that RSPCA guy is! I guess
they've seen the worst and assume everyone out there are stupid or
irresponsible.
