I spoke to Sian the vet tech about the ferret this morning, to check
when I could collect him etc, etc as the RSPCA inspector who was to
collect ferrety boy was off yesterday.

Sian was spitting feathers when she spoke to me. It transpires that
one of the kennel workers where ferrety boy was being boarded took a
shine to him and even though he was booked to come to me, the RSPCA
allowed the kennel worker to take ferrety boy and give him a home. So
that they could rehome another ferret, and without asking permission
from either me or Sian, they bought another boy ferret to the surgery
with the imortal words "your client can have this one instead of the
other one". They then told Sian that I could either have him and he
could be neutered, or he was to be PTS instead as his time was up and
his boarding space filled with someone else.

OK, I am glad that original ferrety boy went to a home where he was
wanted. But I am bloody angry. I've agreed to take new ferrety boy,
who is a white, dark eyed ferret, and will still be called Fungus, but
I have lost any kind of tolerance for the RSPCA and their underhand
tactics.

And to add insult to injury....... before I'm allowed to collect him,
the RSPCA have demanded a home check!!!! OK, I appreciate it's policy,
but for Basts sake I'm the one doing *THEM* the favour!!!

I was talking to receptionist at the local CAB last week, she had a ferral
cat that visited her garden. She fed it and got it friendly, a bit like me
and Shadow. She took it to the local RSPCA to be checked over and was
willing to pay any bills for vet treatment, they decided to put it to sleep
without even consulting her. As you can imagine, she was _very_ upset.

Isn't it time to get in contact with some of the larger newspapers or tv ?

That's disgusting! Fair enough if the check had showed something that
could not be treated but surely they could have done her the courtesy
of a call explaining why they were doing it. After all, she was
offering to pay for treatment..perhaps even wanting to adopt the cat.

Reminds me of when Dave was in Thames House early December 2006. That
cat that was dragging her back legs after being hit by a car? (Sorry I
never did find out what happened) and when I suggested the RSPCA, this
South African guy who had done feral rescue at home and had only been
in the UK a month or so told me that the RSPCA would take an age to
come and then PTS the cat in their van whereas they would take her to
the vet quickly and at least be sure it was a broken spine rather than
something treatable.

Or the time I rescued a cocker spaniel running wild in Bow Road on a
Saturday and all I could get was them insisting my local council
animal wardens were responsible even through they don't work weekends.
They were only prepared to come out for an injured animal. My neice
suggested telling them the dog was limping and when they arrived
saying he'd stopped but just like I wouldn't waste a Hoomin ambulance
time in case I was holding them off from some real emergency..

I am surprised that you are surprised, frankly.  I lost my tolerance for the
RSPCA many years ago.  I used to believe they were a good charity once upon
a time, but I don't think that any more.

I suppose they have to do this, so you will have to put up with it.  Try to
not say anything ;-)
Don't start me on why it's ok for them to destroy dogs, cats, furries daily
and they are so picky about good homes.

RSPCA have p*ssed me off for years.  They are supposed to be an animal
welfare charity which includes wild animals and be available 24/7 and they
are just not doing it.

It's outrageous. Try to keep cool while they're doing the home check,
though. :(

There is nothing easier than to fake a home check if you really need to.  I
don't even understand why they bother.

That stinks.  I don't blame you for being pissed off.  I always thought
the RSPCA was better than many of our "humane" societies here, but it's
sounding like that's not necessarily the case.  I'm truly sorry they
yanked your chain like that.  But at least there are two ferret babies
with a chance at life, now.

That's outrageous.  I'd give out their web site to the group and others and
let them get the email flak for it.  Our local Humane Society used to
advertise declawing services until I told the this group and rpch+b about
it - it's gone from their web site now!  ;>
