It seems Murphy never sleeps!
Last week I was finally able to make the final payment on my little
pickup. Aside from the paperwork delay, Nancy and I now own it free and
clear!
For the last month or so Nancy has been having minor electrical
problems. Truck won't start unless she jiggle battery terminals, little
stuff like that. Yesterday she was driving home from a Rotary Club
meeting and the truck just died in the middle of the street. She had to
have it towed to an electrical shop to find out what's wrong.
She picked it up from the shop today. Their verdict: don't know. It
didn't display any symptoms while they had it, and they even drove it
around. So I guess I'll have to take a look when I get home (if Harri
Roadcat and I ever do get home). Then this evening she was driving the
pickup home when she heard what she describes as a loud flapping noise
that's speed related. She can't find what's causing it. It gets louder
with speed, so she's afraid to drive very fast.
UPDATE: Nancy called my brother to follow her and see if he could spot
what was making the noise. Within a block of starting out, the noise
stopped. I'm thinking she might have run over a plastic bag or something
of the sort that wrapped itself around an axle. I'll take a look at it
when I get home.
And it DOES look like I'll be getting home soon! I'm currently sitting
at the truck stop in Corning, CA and will be rolling soon to pick up a
load in Marysville, CA that delivers in Rancho Cucamonga, CA on Monday.
That will get me back to my home terminal in Colton! Harri finally gets
to meet his Meowmie and his brofur and sisfurs!
Purrs that the poor little truck can stay healthy until I get home to
look at it, and that Nancy can get to and from work ok, would be
appreciated.

Dan, this sounds very much like what happened to John's big (22 foot box
van) truck when we were in Highland and needed to drive nearly 900 miles in
the next few days. I don't know how old your truck is, but his problem
turned out to be the solenoid. Sometimes his truck wouldn't start;
sometimes it died. It made a horrible noise at times. Oh, the other thing
was starter fluid.
Purrs for the vehicle and for you and Harri to get home soon to take a look.
We don't want Nancy stranded!

Vehicle purrs coming. Unknown electrical problems suck and seem almost
totally undiagnosable. I hope the truck keeps running.

Thanks, we're hoping so too.
I might be asking for trouble, but I have an attitude towards this
problem. I may be a truck driver now, but I have a degree in Electrical
Engineering. No truck electrical problem is going to get the best of me,
by god! I've got 3 days off coming this week, so I'm going to spend some
time digging through the electrical system and see what I can find.

It's a clothing-related issue. I bet if you dig through the wiring
long enough, you'll find it's caused by a pair of shorts (evil grin).

Look for mice or squirrel chewing. Whenever I've heard this happen, they are
usually the culprits.

I don't know if this is the same thing as your problem, but it sounds
like the one I had omce.
Years ago, I had a little Ford Ranger that had a problem similar to
this.
It would die for no apparent reason. Then later, it would start and
run fine, despite nothing having been done to it.
I made several trips to the mechanic, and paid $50 each time to hook
it up to their diagnostic machine.
FINALLY (after three visits and $150.00 out of pocket), they found the
problem: a little box called an "inertia switch". It's designed to
shut off the fuel and electrical system in case of a crash (read
sudden sharp change in movement - grin), to prevent a fuel fire.
Somehow it chose to short out every now and then.
Anyway, the little box cost me $85.00, and I never had a lick of
trouble from my little truck after the switch was replaced.

Never heard of such a thing. I'll be sure to check the schematic for
such a beastie.

Ack! I'll keep that in my notebook. I left Marysville about half an hour
after posting that, and am now south of Fresno. But I will probably be
back to travelling California again, so I'll be in touch if Roadcat and
I get dispatched up that way again.

Maybe one of these days. I figured you usually hit the I5 corridor most of
the time, or barely slowed down going thru here.
You sound like you are really ready for some time home. Give Harri an extra
scritch.

Good kitty and human vibes for Nancy's truck to hang in there till you get
back.
It does sound like a plastic bag to me,too -- if she smells a burned plastic
smell that would clinch it.

Purrs on the way. It may be worth changing the battery leads, one of
them may be cracked under the insulation.

Good Behaviour purrs en route for the truck, your speedy homecoming
and your successful forensic examination of said truck, and for
Harri's introduction to the family.
Hope that cover everything

Happy to hear you're almost home and that Harri will finally meet the
rest of his new family.
Sorry to hear about the mystery problem with the truck. Now, if this
were a late 80's Ford I'd know where to look. They had an electronic
module which matches your symptoms when they started to go bad. I have
an '87 Ford PU which had that problem. A few years ago I drove out to
California and then back to Oklahoma. After driving for a while, the
truck would die. Wait ten minutes, and it would start back up and
drive for a couple hours, then die.
Only took three different mechanics to properly diagnose and fix the
problem. The first was a Ford dealer in New Mexico (while I was
traveling cross country to California). They wanted to replace the
fuel pump. In California, they correctly diagnosed the problem and
replaced the module. But, it turns out that there's another electronic
gizmo that should be replaced at the same time - which they didn't do.
When that gizmo is bad, it can burn out the module. So, by the time I
got back to Oklahoma the module was bad. I took it to my regular
mechanic when I got home, and half way through my description he
stopped me and said it knew what the problem was, and that there Ford
had put out a bulletin on how to fix it. An hour later - most of which
was spent waiting for the part, and he had it fixed. This was three
years ago, and the problem never resurfaced.
