leopardusweidii@yahoo.co.uk - 14 Jan 2008 22:48 GMT Please could a little ferret have some urgent safety purrs?
I recieved a phone call from Gertie and Barneys vet on my mobile phone earlier. They left a message asking if I could take a ferret and give him a forever home that had been found as a stray. They said I needed to ring them urgently otherwise he may have to be PTS because the RSPCA were involved. (Translation, the RSPCA didn't want him, so they told the vets to kill him)
I didn't get the message until after the vet had closed for the night however I managed to speak to the emergency staff who told me that the lady dealing with the fert (Sian) was in at 11.30am tomorrow. I know Sian well, and she wouldn't have rung me if she wasn't desperate.
Please could unknown fuzzy ferret have some serious purrs that I'm not too late when I call in the morning, and that I can stop him going to Rainbow Bridge?
Thanks

Purrs for everyone else who needs them, too. Sorry, I still have the remninants of whatever sinus thing plagued me when I was visiting my parents. I'm still not up to snuff and I cracked a rib while I was there. It's no fun even with a purring Persia at my side.... um, she keeps kneading that side and it hurts.

(Translation, the RSPCA didn't want him, so they > told the vets to kill him) I share the same negative view of the RPCA as you do, Helen. I've had personal experience of them, twice. Do I seem like a person who would neglect my animals? First it was because a goat was limping. Well, if you can catch her single-handled in a paddock and find out the cause in a few hours you are a better person than I am. I was aware of it and it was in hand. Then it was because two of my whippet boys had a brotherly dispute over food while I was visiting a friend in hospital until late and I decided the wound could wait until the morning to be stitched. Got the uniformed bod there an hour after I got home.
I know they do good work in the field of extreme animal cruelty, but actually they have no more power than any other member of the public who could choose to take out a private prosecution as they have to.
What I don't like is they come in uniform and call themselves "Inspector" like they are some sort of police.

Likewise, I've had the RSPCA called on me about HRFL. He was born with congenital cateracts and before his eye was removed, he was always having problems with it. One day I had an RSPCA Inspector turn up at the door and demand to know why it wasn't being treated - one of the neighbours had made a cruelty complaint..
When I informed him that not only was Tiger seeing a vet regularly, he was actually being treated by a leading veterinary opthalmologist at the Animal Health Trust, the Inspector demanded that I give him the name of my primary care vet so he could verify facts. He then immediately rang my vet in my presence and demanded that Malcolm come out of surgery to speak to him. The Inspector was a disgrace. He was bombastic, obnoxious and very intimidating. Fortunately though, I'm me and I don't stand any nonsense.
I don't even need to start about the debacle involving Miss Lily Whiskers and the RSPCA before I got my hands on her.

I've never wanted any bloody ferrets. Gertie was a similar rescue from the same vet as Fungus, Barney we got to keep Gertie company because ferrets need to live in company. I don't want Fungus. But I'm also not prepared for him to be killed by the RSPCA just beacuse he's stray and his time is up. And besides, ferrets *are* kind of cute....

___ They insisted I had a goat put down when I was fairly sure I could get her well again. I have no time for them and no way would I ever donate any money to them. Just try to get them to come out to an injured badger on the road, you can forget it. They present themselves so well on the TV programmes, don't they?

----- There are ferret rescue societies in the UK. Once you save him from the chop maybe one of them would help if you explain that you have two that you didn't really want and now another is being forced on you? And he is being forced on you because you are kind enough to not want him to be put down. "Take this animal or we will kill it!" Moral blackmail.

From what I understand, ferts do well in groups and 3 is no more work than 2...... ;o) Sian also uses me to filter cats into no- kill CP rescue away from the RSPCA when they are scheduled to be PTS....
Besides.... Fungus is now my Year 11's mascot and I could have always said no, I suppose..... ;o) Ferret rescues in South Wales are inundated - no-one wants ferts, and I've already arranged to have him microchipped to my ownership like Gertie and Barney..... The ferts belong to my brother....... no really, they do....... in the same way Miss Lily Whiskers does........ ;o)

Yes, and the theory is that the RSPA will take in all unwanted animals and find them a lovely home. They don't, although to be fair they do if they can in a short time. Until a few years ago they used to electrocute stray dogs and cats that were not claimed in a week. Saves on the lethal injection. I got my lurcher Trim from there one day before she was going to be euthanised (one week after she came in) I can't say that she was easy, but she lived here until she was 14 and got liver cancer.
I have no time for the RSPCA.

Sian the vet tech and I were discussing the RSPCA PTS policy earlier. Apparently, the RSPCA are very, very blase about euthanaisia - it's a case of them telling the vets to find it a home or PTS and if it's going to cost money to treat, forget it. The vets end up homing 90% of the stray cats to their clients, or filtering them through fosterers like me. Dogs have very little chance unless the vet can get them into either the dogs trust in Bridgend, or one of the other no-kill rescues. :o(
