Did anyone watch the National Geographic Channel presentation of BF's
DogTown last night (4 Jan)?  We worked as volunteers at BFAS a couple of
years ago, all of it in the kitty department, but did check out other
areas to include dogs, rabbits, goats, horses, et al to see what they were
like but worked exclusively with the cats.

Anyway, I thought I had a leg up working behind the scenes, a real
know-it-all, I was.  But did I get an education seeing what *really* goes
on!!  Not the nice, superficial introduction to life at a sanctuary (the
time when the animals are happy and healthy) but the ugly side, the hard
work and fierce dedication of the staff, the beautiful comebacks of abused
animals finding love and caring for a change.  I'm a cat person but can't
get those doggies out of my mind.  Bless 'em all.  Thank whatever powers
may be for the merciful kindness in most human hearts, and those who lay
it on the line by their efforts and support.

I saw the program TWICE to make sure I did not miss anything.  I was
so moved by the dedication and love shown by the people there.  I wish
I was able to move out there and join the staff.  I spent years
fostering orphan new born kittens, bottle feeding them and everything
that goes with the job of love.  I miss my fostering very much, but my
health got to the point where I could not handle the severe lack of
sleep suffered when bottle feeding truely new born kittens.

Jeanne,
I wanted to watch it but Sam is afraid of dogs and whenever we watch
something on television that has dogs barking he gets very upset. We
usually just turn the volume off while the dogs are barking but we
thought it might be a little more barking than usual.  He can be in
the back of the house but if a dog is barking on the television he
comes running in, ears perked and a look of anxiety in his eyes.  I'm
hoping they do a segment on the cats. I'll be sure to watch that one.
We are "Friends of Best Friends" and I hope to visit and spend a week
volunteering sometime hopefully this year.  I just knew it would be a
good program,  I wish we could have watched it.

Aww, poor Sam. Sending purrs that are loud enough to drown out barking
sounds.

This is where Closed Captioning for the hearing impaired comes in very
handy. I'm not hearing impaired, but I do have trouble sometimes making
out words, especially when there's distortion such as when I'm hearing
it on TV or in a movie. So over the past few years I've been using the
captions all the time. Pretty much all current TV shows have them, and
it's a switch you can turn on in your TV set. That way, you can watch
the entire show with the sound off and just read the captions. If there's
a lot of dog barking, there might be a caption saying "[dogs barking]",
but that probably wouldn't scare Sam. :)

I hadn't thought of that Joyce, but you're right. We use that feature
whenever DH's father is visiting because he has trouble hearing. I'll
do exactly that next time, thanks for the idea.
