Re: the cat tree I told you I'd post the pic of. We hit a snag. Got halfway
through and ran out of carpet. I'm not sure what to do now. I can't find
another remnant that matches.  Maybe wrap the remaining posts with sisal? Or
use a contrasting color carpet? It's for the Humane Society's cat room, so it's
not like they're going to complain about it, I guess I'm just obsessing. What
do ya'll think?
Here's a pic of progress so far:

Looks really great.  I'd go with the sisal.

I think that goes beyond "tree" to "forest", or maybe "mansion" or "castle."

That's awesome.  And according to my cat, there's no such thing as too much
sisal.

I like the sisal idea. Give the cats different surfaces to choose
from.

Question from the peanut gallery: I've never done any real building.  If I
wanted to start a project like this, how would I make sure the base would be
stable enough for active play?  (Not that my cat is active, but a girl can
dream.)  Also, what do you use to affix the carpet and rope?  Glue, nails,
screws?

The base is 3/8" plywood, you just have to make sure it's as big as possible,
but still narrow enough to fit through a door. It also helps to have the weight
distributed toward the bottom. This one is 24" square base. I thought it was
too small but DH didn't, I guess he was right because it doesn't wiggle at all
unless they really get rough with it. Being designed to fit in a corner helps
stability, too. The posts at the bottom are secured to the base with wood glue
and long screws. The carpet is put on with a heavy-duty staple gun. The sisal,
you just staple at the bottom then wrap it REALLY REALLY tight, and staple at
the top. I don't think I have enough muscles to wrap it tight enough but DH
does a really good job, it looks nice. On the other cat trees it has held up
really good.
He doesn't use a pattern, he just looks at trees in catalogues and stores and
copies them. But the first one we did, we bought a CD with detailed
instructions on how to build it. I still have that somewhere around here. If
you want to give it a try, it's a good way to start one. I'll be glad to mail
it to you if you like.

Thanks for all the info!  Sure, I'll follow up with my address in a personal
email.  It gets dark so early over the winter; I might as well have a pet
project that benefits my cat!

what a beautiful cat tree!
It's a rather neutral gray, so liven it up with a really bright color, red
or orange, or bright yellow! Heh, drive the kitties bananas. Too bad you
didn't have enough for that last bottom leg, but hey, they'll love it
anyway.

I'm ignorant; can cats see in color?

Also, are you the Irulan I know?

I think they can. Grant favors purple.

I wonder if you could buy a couple of those door mats (inexpensive) and cut
and glue them up. Pearl absolutely adores this surface and it is a good
cheap scratch pad.

Like this one. I bet you can get them at walmart cheap.

I think you could just do sisal. Wow. That is a GREAT tree!

Wow, Sherry, that's excellent!!!  I think sisal on the rest would look neat.

Wow!! That's really impressive! It looks great, Sherry.

I think you should cover the remaining wood with sisal. It'll look better
that way, the kitties will love it, and they don't really need more carpet,
as there's plenty there already.

*Great* work. I worked on a project with a rescue group last year,
building cat trees (literally - we used large tree limbs cut down by
the city as the base), but they didn't look nearly as professional
as yours. Of course, none of us had much in the way of carpentry skills,
except one person who showed up occasionally to answer questions and
show us how to do stuff. But we did most of the actual work, and it
showed. :) I think in the future, if I ever build another cat tree,
I'll just use regular lumber, not a tree limb!

IMHO you should get an engineer to do the math re: the size of the base
in proportion to the height of the tree.   Otherwise IMHO it is
magnificent.   MLB

P.S.  Perhaps the weight of the cats should be considered in the formula
also.

Sherry, that's one cool kitty playground -- how nice of you to do this for
them -- I think the kitties really like the sisal stuff.

That is awesome.  My crew would love it.

I would use sisal for the rest.

Sherry, that's a great cat tree.  More of a gym really.  The one's
I've made aren't nearly as interesting as this one.

In re-carpeting the tree I made for our cats, I've also hit a
snag......I got halfway finished and realized 'I have got to take all
of this carpet off and start over.  It's *berber*.  I can't use
berber.  It comes off in long strings.  Sh*t.

I'm agreeing with many of the other posters here Sherry....I'd go with
the sisal for the remainder of the posts needing to be covered.  That
sisal really holds it's own, it's just incredibly mean on the hands.

Oh, thanks so much for that information. When I was begging for free carpet at
the carpet store, the manager offered me this huge piece of berber that I
almost took instead of the blue, because it was bigger. But I wasn't sure how
it would work. It sure would have looked good though.

Sisal gets my vote.  Man, that thing looks GREAT!  Kudos!

Frankly, I like the mixture of textures that it has right now.  You're
probably worried about splinters which keeps you from just staining
the wood parts as they stand.  If you want to complete it with carpet,
use a contrasting color and put rope on the front bottom support.

What a nice thing to make for the shelter kitties!
