Mischief - 05 Jan 2008 04:49 GMT I cooked myself Tuna Helper tonight, and like an idiot I took my helping and left the rest in the pan on the stove.
That was about 30 minutes ago.
I just went to put my dish in the sink and guess who I found on the stove, perched over the pan.
Mischief jumped off the stove, licking her lips and ran off. I gave her a light smack on the rear and scolded her. Didn't even phase her. She just kept licking her lips and starting washing herself.
It didn't look like she ate much, but several areas were missing sauce as it if it had been licked off. I thought about it and then scooped the rest of the Tuna Helper into a container and put it in the fridge. I can't afford to be throwing food away.
And besides, like they say here, everything is supposed to taste better with cat spit.

Granby - 05 Jan 2008 05:37 GMT If I threw away everything the cats tasted, sniffed or put a paw in, the garage can would get more food than I do. I baked two loaves of bread tonight and went in to see O. T. and Willow sniffing it.

I left a mug of coffee on my desk, lukewarm with milk. When I came back, I found tabby ticked hairs in the mug, and a double-thumbed coffee pawprint on the desk.
I went to my chief inspector, Buster, and asked his opinion on what might have transpired. His deduction? Aliens.

That's all well and good when what is involved is simply _sniffing_ or even _nibbling_ but Sunrise will sneak as close as possible to your food and take a deep, appreciative breath and then SNEEZE on it. She must be carefully watched, even though she is the PRITTY wun.
She especially likes sneezing on oatmeal and on potatos with sour cream.

Granby - 05 Jan 2008 19:20 GMT WHOA, sneezing is a whole different thing. No thank you! Don't tell the cats but if they sneeze on it, it is theirs. Last night I had a glass of wine on the end table and I heard someone lapping, was O. T/ and the kitchen sink pipes got a taste on wine. He had drank a good bit while I went to put in laundry. No ill effects, thank goodness. My son in law bought be a wine glass sippy cup at spencers and I may have to start using that!!!!

Doesn't like tuna in any way, shape or form. She might have gone for the noodles in sauce, though.

A year or so ago, DH left some bratwurst on the counter to cool. Typically Oscar doesn't get up on the counter (while we're home), and anyway, bratwurst?
Came downstairs some time later and found bite marks in all three brats. Just on the ends. She apparently didn't like them, but took care to sample all three, just in case.
DH was not amused. I was. (I'm sure the fact that I'm not crazy about bratwurst is irrelevant.)

I seem to remember you telling us that story. I love the idea of her tasting all three just in case one was acceptable to her. Of course she could have been releasing greeblings that were trapped inside the sausage casing. Yeah, that's the ticket, greeblings.

Everything does taste better with cat spit, barring juicy little sneezes, of course. But I can' afford to throw out anything the cats might have investigated, either.

Actually "brat" means -- huh -- interesting. I would have said it's related to the word "to fry", "braten", but apparently I'd be wrong.
http://germanenglishwords.com/rlgb.htm
from Bratwurst "meat sausage": a kind of sausage ideally made of pure pork that is usually fried [< German Brät, Brat "finely chopped, raw sausage meat before filling into skins" < Middle High German brate < Old High German brato "pure meat (not mixed with other ingredients), soft parts" (related to German Braten "roast meat", not related to braten "to fry" as some dictionaries state and many German speakers themselves also believe) + Wurst "sausage"].

I would be inclined to concur with your deduction with regards to the relations to the word "braten"... :) I'd say braten is a word used both for frying in a frying pan or cooking something in the oven.

Hobbes definitely has been guilty of tasting food on the stove when he was a young, spry kitten. Fortunately I have an electric stove so I don't have to worry about pilot lights burning him but I have a fear of a cat on the stove somehow tuning the stove on and burning paws. When I realized Hobbes would jump onto the stove to taste dinner I started putting pans of food in the oven or microwave while we ate. Like everyone that has responded, unless it has a lot of hair in it I'll eat after my cats. Barnabus is the only one I have to think twice about. He likes to taste food first by putting his paw in it and licking the food off his paw. I have some trouble thinking about the paw that had recently been in the litterbox dipping into my ice cream.

I still think about that time Hobbes made a mess of the coffee machine, and I used to wonder if I had to watch my kitties while I was making coffee, but they run away at the sound of the coffee grinder, so I seem to be safe. :)
